To search for antioxidant compounds from plant resources, ethanol extracts of 10 plants species were investigated using DPPH method and SOD activity by NBT method. The highest activity was shown in the ethanol extracts of Schizandra Chinesis Baillon. And than, antioxidant effects and total polyphenol concentration were investigated in solvent fraction of ethanol extracts from Schizandra Chinesis Baillon. The DPPH inhibitory activity and SOD activity of ethyl acetate fraction (DPPH 51.6%, SOD 66.2%) and butanol fraction(DPPH 60.7%, SOD 67.4%) showed strong biological activities.

The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf was fractionated by various organic solvents, and their antimicrobial and antioxidative activities were investigated against several microorganisms. The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf at two thousand $\mu\textrm{g}$ per disc showed 17~21mm inhibition zone against Gram postive and Gram negative bacteria. Among the various solvent fractions from ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf, the hexane fraction showed the strongest antimicrobial activity. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexane fraction was 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Bacillus cereus, 250~500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Listeria monocytogenes, 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Also, the hexane and chloroform fraction had the similar antioxidative activity compared to that of butylated hydroxy toluene(BHT).
This study was performed to investigate the possible use of Eisenia bicyclis (EB) ethanol extract to inhibit activity against lipase. In tests, the lipase inhibitory activity of EB ethanol extract was noted as being 43, 27, and 24% at concentrations of 5, 2.5, and 1 mg/ml, respectively. Isolation was carried out by liquid and liquid extraction, silica-gel column chromatography, and HPLC. The results showed that the lipase inhibitory activity of the ethyl acetate (EA) fraction from EB ethanol extract exhibited the strongest lipase inhibitory activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of 1.31 mg/ml. The EA fraction was separated using silica-gel column chromatography and we obtained 22 sub-fractions. Amongst them, the EA1 fraction showed the highest lipase inhibitory activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of 0.54 mg/ml. Eight peaks were obtained from the EA1 fraction by HPLC. Fraction 5 also showed a strong lipase inhibitory activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of 0.37 mg/ml. The fraction 5 was identified as dieckol and the inhibition pattern analyzed from Lineweaver-Burk plots revealed a non-competitive inhibitor. These results suggest that EB has potential as a natural anti-obesity agent.

In this study, the antioxidative effects of Sueada asparagoides and Salicornia herbacea extracts were investigated. The free radical(1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity($FSC_{50}$) of extract/fractions of Sueada asparagoides was in the order: 100 % ethanol extract(329.33 ${\mu}g/mL$) < 50 % ethanol extract(40.73) < ethylacetate fraction(13.87) < deglycosylated aglycone fraction (7.80). In case of Salicornia herbacea, the free radical scavenging activities of ethylacetate fraction and aglycone fraction were 13.87 and 7.80 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Reactive oxygen species(ROS) scavenging activities($OSC_{50}$) of Sueada asparagoides and Solicornia herbacea extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}-EDTA/H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The order of ROS scavenging activity of Sueada asparagoides extracts was 50 % ethanol extract($OSC_{50}$, $0.99{\mu}g/mL$) < ethylacetate fraction (0.05) < aglycone fraction (0.03). Aglycone fraction showed the most prominent scavenging activity. In case of Salicornia herbacea, the ROS scavenging activities of ethylacetate fraction and aglycone fraction were 0.10 and 0.20 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The protective effects of extract/fractions of Sueada asparagoides and Salicornia herbacea on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The ethanol extract(100%) of Sueada asparagoides diminished photohemolysis in a concentration dependent manner($1{\sim}100{\mu}g/mL$). Particularly deglycosylated aglycone fraction exhibited the most prominent celluar protective effect($\tau_{50}$, 310 min at 50 ${\mu}g/mL$). In case of Salicornia herbacea, ethylacetate fraction exhibited more potent protective effect. These results indicate that extract/fractions of Sueada asparagoides can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS.

We have isolated fractions from Cordyceps militaris and Paecilomyces japonica and investigated their effects on the activity of rat liver cytosolic glucokinase, a key metabolic enzyme involved in carbohydrate metabolism. The dried powder of the C. militaris and P. japonica were successively extracted with ethanol and with 70% ethanol. The residue was exhaustively extracted with hot water. The extract was dialyzed against water, and to the non-dialyzable solution was added 2 volumes of ethanol. The precipitate was collected by centrifugation dispered in water, and lyophilized to afford fraction A. The residue after hot-water extraction was suspended in 5% sodium carbonate. The final residue was suspended in 5% NaOH. The alkaline suspension was purified in a similar manner as described above to afford fraction B. Hepatic glucokinase activities of the fraction A extracted from C. militaris and P. japonica were 371.4 and 379%, respectively. The fraction B was 314.2 and 147.4%. The activity of fraction B of C. militaris extracts was higher than that of P. japonica. Liver cytosolic glucokinase activity of rats fed normal diet supplemented with 0.1% C. militaris was 1316%. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated that C. militaris extracts were able to prevent sudden postprandial peaks in blood glucose as a result of a marked increase in the liver cytosolic glucokinase activities.

This study was conducted to examine antioxidant activities of Perilla frutescens var. acuta leaf. For the this purpose, DPPH radical scavenging activity, lipid oxidation inhibition, SOD-like activity, and xanthine oxidase inhibitor activity of water extract, ethanol extracts (30, 50, 70, and 95%) and the fractions obtained from these extracts were determined. The electron donating abilities of the chloroform fraction obtained from the 70% and 95% ethanol extracts were 50%, and that of the ethyl acetate fraction for all of the extracts was above 75%. In particular, the electron donating ability of the ethyl acetate fraction of the 70% ethanol extract showed the greatest activity with 200.5 ppm of $RC_{50}$ value. The 70% ethanol extract was most effective to inhibit the automatic oxidation of linoleic acid at $40^{\circ}C$ storage. The highest inhibition effects appeared in the chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions of the water extract, and the 30, 50, and 70% ethanol extracts, and the highest lipid oxidation inhibiting effect of the 95% ethanol extract occurred in the hexane and acetate fractions. The SOD-like activity of the water extract was 30.3%, and the activities of the various concentration of ethanol extracts were 28-32% and the activity of the 70% ethanol extract was the highest. The SOD-like activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of the 70% ethanol extract was highest with 1,549.0 ppm of $RC_{50}$ value. Xanthine oxidase inhibition activity was greatest in the water extract and the activities of the ethanol extracts were 36-41.2%. The xanthine oxidase inhibition activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of the water extract was highest. In summary, we found that electron donating ability, lipid oxidation inhibition, and SOD-like activity of Perilla frutescens var. acuta leaf were greatest in the ethyl acetate fraction of the 70% ethanol extract, and xanthine oxidase inhibition activity was highest in the ethyl acetate fraction of the water extract.

Antimicrobial activities of grape seed ethanol extract and its serial solvent fractions were investigated against various food poisoning microorganisms. The grape seed ethanol extract showed dose dependant antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 9372 or Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, whereas had limited effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa IFO 3080, Salmonella enteritidis IFO 3313 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. Ethylacetate and butanol fractions ameng the serial solvent fractions of grape seed ethanol extract contained the catechin at the levels of 35.7 mg/g and 20.2 mg/g, respectively. Nevertheless, the butanol fraction of grape seed ethanol extract showed intense antimicrobial activity compared with the ethylacetate fraction on all microorganisms tested. It was found that the butanol fraction was mainly composed of oligomeric or polymeric polyphenols such as condensed tannins by the fractionation on C l8 cartridge according to the difference in the degree of polymerization. Therefore, it seems that the antimicrobial activity of grape seed ethanol extract is related to the degree of polymerization of proanthocyanidin as well as the total content of flavan-3-ol composing the proanthocyanidin.
Membrane pervaporation processes could have advantages over distillation for separation of water/organics mixtures: a low energy demand and the ability to separate azeotropic mixtures or isomers. Zeolite membranes might show better thermal, mechanical and chemical stabilities than polymer membranes. Water could be effectively separated from water/organic mixtures using the NaA zeolite membrane because of its high hydrophilicity. In this study, water was separated by pervaporation using the NaA zeolite membrane from water/ethanol mixtures. As a mole fraction of ethanol increased, the total permeation flux and the water flux decreased while the separation factor increased, reached a maximum point, and decreased. As an experimental temperature increased, the total permeation flux increased while the separation factor increased at the lower mole fraction of ethanol than 0.8 and it decreased at the higher mole fraction of ethanol than 0.8. The total permeation flux and the separation factor could be maintained constant during the long term experiment longer than 160 hours. It was found that the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized in our study showed better performance on water/ethanol separation than that of a distillation process or PVA polymeric pervaporation membranes.
This study examined the antioxidant activity of ethanol extract and fraction from Castanea crenata inner shell in vitro. Antioxidant activity was evaluated through total polyphenol and flavonoid contents and DPPH radical scavenging ability using electron spin resonance (ESR). The total polyphenol contents of the 70% ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction were 39.76 mg GAE/g and 323.92 mg GAE/g (p < 0.05). The total polyphenol contents of the ethyl acetate fraction were higher than other fractions. Furthermore, the total flavonoid contents of ethyl acetate were higher than other fractions at 13.12 mg QE/g (p < 0.05). In DPPH radical scavenging ability measurement, the RC50 value of ethyl acetate was lower than ascorbic acid at 2.27 ㎍/mL (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this result showed that the ethyl acetate fraction of Castanea crenata inner shell 70% ethanol extract has high antioxidant activity.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy and mechanism of fraction IV cold ethanol fractionation and pasteurization (60$^{\circ}C$ heat treatment for 10 h), involved in the manufacture of albumin from human plasma, in the removal and/or inactivation of the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Samples from the relevant stages of the production process were spiked with HAV and the amount of virus in each fraction then quantified using a 50% tissue culture infectious dose (TCID$\_$50/). HAV was effectively partitioned from albumin during the fraction IV cold ethanol fractionation with a log reduction factor of 3.43. Pasteurization was also found to be a robust and effective step in inactivating HAV, where the titers were reduced from an initial titer of 7.60 log TCID$\_$50/ to undetectable levels within 5 h of treatment. The log reduction factor achieved during pasteurization was $\geq$4.76. Therefore, the current results indicate that the production process for albumin has sufficient HAV reducing capacity to achieve a high margin of virus safety.
