  • As a case study of the changed aquatic environment due to an estuary dam, the Geum River Estuary Dam System (GREDS) has been investigated for the last two decades. We sought the similarities and differences in the disrupted aquatic environment between the estuarine and lacustrine sides of the GREDS. Both sides of the GREDS shared similar aquatic disruptions, such as elongated hydraulic residence times, deteriorated water quality, highly accumulated organic-rich sediments, and considerable siltation of river-transported materials prior to reaching coastal waters. The disruptions of water quality such as high nutrients concentration and frequent bloom of blue-green algal are much more noticeable in the reservoir than in the estuary. However serious siltation problem has been reported from the estuary, which will possibly threaten the proper functioning of the natural Kunsan Estuarine System.

  • Sedimentation changes related with bottom shear stress attenuation at JangHang channel in the Keum River Estuary, where several huge coastal constructions including an estuarine dam have been conducted for last 2 decades, were evaluated for 7 cases to figure out passage hindrance through the channel by a hydrodynamic model using hind-casting technique from 1988 to 2000 at every 2 years interval. Due to the construction of Keum River Estuary Dam, the maximum bottom shear stress rapidly lessened to $0.2-0.6N/m^2$ compared to$1-2N/m^2$ in natural status. Especially it marks below the critical shear stress of $0.4N/m^2$ resulting in severe siltation in the channel just after the closing of dam gates in 1994. It is concluded that the dam may block the tidal energy propagation to upstream and directly results in sedimentation environment in front of dam site. It is also revealed that at least 20% of passage hindrance of small fishing boats through the channel could be counted due to sedimentation by analysis of predicted mean spring tides.

  • In this study, an implicit one-dimensional model, DWRM(Dynamic Wave Routing Model) was developed by using the four-point weighted difference method. By applying the developed model to the Keum River, the parameters were calibrated and the model applicability was tested through the comparison between observed and computed water levels. In addition, the effects of the construction of an estuary dam to the flood wave were estimated as a result of the model application. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1. The roughness coefficients were evaluated by comparison between observed and computed water level at Jindu, Gyuam and Ganggyeung station in 1985. The Root Mean Squares for water level differences between observed and computed values were 0.10, 0.11, 0. 29m and the differences of peak flood levels were 0.07, 0.02, 0. 07m at each station. Since the evaluated roughness coefficients were within the range of 0.029-0.041 showing the realistic value for the general condition of rivers, it can be concluded that the calibration has been completed. 2. By the application of model using the calibrated roughness coefficients, the R. M. S. for water level differences were 0.16, 0.24, 0. 24m and the differences of peak flood level were 0.17, 0.13,0.08 m at each station. The arrival time of peak flood at each station and the stage-discharge relationship at Gongju station agreed well with the observed values. Therefore, it was concluded that the model could be applied to the Keum River. 3. The model was applied under conditions before and after the construction of the estuary dam. The 50-year frequency flood which had 7, 800m$^3$/sec of peak flood was used as the upstream condition, and the spring tide and the neap tide were used as the downstream condition. As the results of the application, no change of the peak flood level was showed in the upper reaches of 19.2km upstream from the estuary dam. For areas near 9.6km upstream from the estuary dam, the change of the peak flood level under the condition before and after the construction was 0. 2m. However considering the assumptions for the boundary conditions of downstream, the change of peak flood level would be decreased.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigated the change of hydraulic characteristics like water surface profile and rivered section in the down stream of Keum river after the construction of esturary dam. The effect of esturary dam on the flood control in the Keum river was recognized with the data of two flood events happened in July, 1987 before the construction and in August, 1995 after the construction of estuary dam. For example , duration time above the water level of the warning -flood was changed from 46.5 to 42.8 hours and duration time above the eater level of the danger-flood was changed from 24.7 to 19.8 hours at the Kyuam station. The time difference to reach the water level of the designated -flood between Kyuam and Kangkyung was changed from 3 hours in 1987 to 12 hours and 20 minutes in 1995. The water surface slope of river decreased 25.6% between estuary dam and Kangkyung and increased 16.5% between Kangkyung and Kyuam, and decreased 8.8% between Kyuam and Kongju. As the result, velocity was getting faster and river bed was scoured in the reach of Kangkyung and Kyuam, and velocity was getting slower and river bed was sedimented in the reach of Kangkyung and estury dam.

  • The flow of the middle and downstream of the Yeongsan River is stagnant by two weirs of Seungchon and Juksan and the estuary dam and maintained in freshwater. In this study, the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code-National Institute of Environment Research(EFDC-NIER) model was applied to the Yeongsan River to simulate water flow, temperature, and salinity stratification. The EFDC-NIER model is an improved model which can simulate multi-functional weirs operation, multiple algal species, and the vertical movement mechanism of algal based on the EFDC model. The simulation results for the water level, water temperature, velocity, and salinity reproduced the observed values well. The mean absolute error(MAE) of the model calibration in the annual variations of the water level was 0.1-0.3 m, water temperature was 0.8-1.7 ℃, velocity was 4.5-7.1 cm/sec, and salinity was 1.5 psu, respectively. In the case of scenario simulation for the full opening of the estuary dam, the water level of the estuary dam was directly impacted by the tide so it was predicted to rise - 1.35 m to 0.2 m on average sea level. The velocity was also predicted to increase from 2.7 cm/sec to 50.8 cm/sec, and the flow rate to increase from 53 ㎥/sec to 5,322 ㎥/sec.

  • In order to analyze water supply capacity in estuary barrage dam, a system was developed in which base model was consisted of daily water balance model and daily inflow model. Agricultural water demand to paddy fields and domestic and industrial water demand were considered in this daily water balance model. Also outflow volume through sluice gate and inside water level at time to start outflow was conditioned initially to simulate reservoir storage. The DAWAST model was selected to simulate daily reservoir inflow in which return flows from agricultural, domestic and industrial water were included to simulate runoff. Using this developed system, water supply capacity in the Keum river estuary reservoir was analyzed.

  • We applied SP monitoring and resistivity surveys using the pole-pole electrode array to seawater leakage problems in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment to estimate and detect the zone of seawater leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. For this reason, SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity surveys, which are relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of Youngsan estuary dam to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincided with tidal variations at each embankment. At the leakage zones in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment, SP anomalies are in the range of -60~-85 mV and -20~-50 mV, respectively, and true resistivity values obtained by 2-D inversion are 3~15 ohm-m and below 0.3 ohm-m, respectively. Both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are found to be quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.

  • Nakdong River Estuary is affected by the dam, barrage construction and dredge and reclaim worked artificially. So, we have studied the area input both freshwater and sea water to understand marine environment of Nakdong River estuary related to the effect of artificial work from 2013 to 2015. As a result, The discharge flow to the estuary remarkably decreased before barrage construction and the average of salinity at the estuary increased. So, the brackish water zone reduced under the influence of decreased discharge flow. The major sources of nitrate and silicate were freshwater, phosphate supplied from bottom and the open sea water. The concentration of phosphate and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased remarkably in spring and summer. we investigated that phosphate in freshwater was removed under the influence of the estuary dam and phosphate in sea water was removed under the influence of phytoplankton. The low concentration of DO was due to decomposition of the organic compound by microorganism after phytoplankton blooms. Generally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a in summer was higher than spring and fall. Therefore, the change of ecosystem in Nakdong river estuary was due to decrease of freshwater influx, the other change is facing because of the barrage.
