  • Conventional Korean tunnel portals require a lot of overburden. For stability reasons, about 1.5 to 2.0 times the tunnel diameter is needed for the height in order to achieve a sufficient arching effect. Thus, considerable movement of earth and support constructions are required which lead to undesirably large changes of and damage to the environment. With a massively designed pipe roof, tunnels at low overburden can be built. To effectively construct pipe roof as an advanced safeguarding method, the following properties are indispensable: stability, insensitivity to settling and drilling accuracy. A new pipe roof method, AT-casing system, has been developed which on the one hand entirely combines the properties mentioned above, and which on the other hand permits the construction of safe, economical and environmentally friendly tunnels at low overburden heights of 3 to 5m.

  • This study was performed to investigate the cultivation pattern and perception, such as safety awareness, of environmentally-friendly organic materials among Korean farmers. The main reason for participation of the environmentally-friendly agriculture was for the production of safe agricultural crops. Compared to small-acreage farmer were more aware about the safety of environmentally-friendly organic materials to the subjects. Accordingly, 23.6% among the respondents with environmentally-friendly agriculture certification experienced the adverse effect by using the environmentally-friendly organic materials, compared to 33.8% of among the respondent without the certification. The experienced type of adverse effects consisted mainly 'eyes itch', 'hands and feet itch' and 'fatigue'. Also, respondent experiencing the adverse effects by using the environmentally-friendly organic materials more comply with the usage standard as how to use marked in wrapping paper, compared to the respondent without experiencing the adverse effects, which indicate that the compliance with the usage standard as how to use marked in wrapping paper is closely related the experience the adverse effects. Further study should be needed for more precise investigation of comment for the farmers in order to suggest the effective improvement in terms of policy or education for their safety.

  • BACKGROUND: The conazoles, difenoconazole, diniconazole, hexaconazole, penconazole and tetraconazole are a large class of synthetic fungicides used extensively for foliage and seed treatments in agricultural crops. The extensive use of conazoles has brought concerns on the potentiality of environmental contamination and toxicity. Thus studies on the development of methods for monitoring the conazoles are required. METHODS AND RESULTS: A modified quick, easy, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method was involved in sample preparation. Quadrapole time of flight mass spectrometer (Q-TOF MS) in electron spray ionization (ESI) mode was employed to determine conazoles in garlic samples. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of conazoles by Q-TOF-MS ranged from 0.001 to 0.002 mg/L and 0.002 to 0.005 mg/L, respectively. Q-TOF-MS analysis exhibited less than 2.6 ppm error of accurate mass measurements for the detection of conazoles spiked at 0.05 mg/L in garlic matrix. Recovery values of conazoles fortified in garlic samples at 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/L were between 79.2 and 106.2% with a maximum 11.8% of standard deviation. No detectable conazoles were found in the domestic market samples by using the Q-TOF-MS method. CONCLUSION(s): High degree of confirmation for conazoles by accurate mass measurements demonstrated that Q-TOF-MS analysis combined with a QuEChERS method may be applicable to simultaneous determination of conazoles in garlic samples.

  • Tunnelling to bypass major landslide areas is considered as a good and long-term environmentally friendly solution to reduce an existing hazard. In Norway, hundreds of kilometres of tunnels have been constructed in areas prone to landslides and snow avalanches. Although tunnelling is considered as an expensive mitigation strategy for bypassing landslides, analysis indicate that in some cases the cost of building a tunnel can be repaid by savings in driving costs (fuel) alone over a period of 5-10 years due to reduced driving distances. The other benefits of constructing tunnels in landslide areas include savings in time and increased safety. The Norwegian Method of Tunnelling (NMT) is considered safe, efficient and cost effective compared to other tunnelling techniques. Some aspects of NMT, which are considered safe and cost efficient, are presented. The application of updated rock support techniques, including reinforced ribs of shotctrete (RRS), which is a key component of the Norwegian Method of Tunnelling (NMT), is highlighted.

  • The main intent of this research was to determine the feasibility of utilizing recycling bottom ash as CLSM (controlled low-strength material). CLSM is a cementitious material, commonly a blend of portland cement, fly ash, sand, and water, that is usually flowable and self-leveling at the time of placement. The durability characteristics of mixtures made bottom ash we compared with those of fly ash CLSM in order to evaluate the effectiveness and suitability of bottom ash as material in CLSM. A comprehensive evaluation of the bottom ash in CLSM and mix proportions indicated that the bottom ash are capable of performing as CLSM mixtures. The durability characteristic of CLSM incorporating the bottom ash under various physical and chemical causes of deterioration were investigated. Test results indicated that CLSM using bottom ash has acceptable durability performance. CLSM incorporating with bottom ash were also found to be environmentally safe.

  • Numerous insect pests threaten the Korean orchard industry through feeding on various tissues of fruit trees. Generally, the control of economically important orchard pests is based on the use of chemical insecticides. Owing to growing concerns regarding the environmental and human health effects of insecticides, environment-friendly pest control strategies are urgently needed. Pheromones of orchard pests could lead to an environmentally safe control system based on mating disruption or mass trapping. This review summarizes the functions and compounds of known pheromones from 51 orchard pests in Korea. The pheromones identified to date from 14 species in the families Miridae, Aphididae, Diaspididae, Pseudococcidae, Rutelidae, Cecidomyiidae, and Eurytomidae and 26 species in the order Lepidoptera are female-produced sex pheromones that attract only males. In contrast, all known examples for 11 species in the families Alydidae, Pentatomidae, Thripidae and Cerambycidae are male-produced aggregation pheromones that attract both sexes. Research on pheromones in new pests, kairomones in key orchard pests, mating disruption dispensers to generate prolonged release of the pheromones, and trap design and trap location for mass trapping will be required for the expanded use of pheromones and other semiochemicals in orchard pest management in the future.
