  • We conducted several different leaching experiments for assessing the potential environmental risk when utilizing recycled concrete for stabilizing bridge pier. The methods include continuous batch leaching test (DIN 38414-S4), availability test (NEN 7341), pH-stat test (CEN/TC 292/WG6) and tank diffusion test (NEN 7345). The concentration ranges vary depending on the testing method. Nearly all the trace elements were low, some elements recording under detection limit. The maximum concentrations for trace elements leached throughout the whole tests are (as mg/L); Cd (0.029), Cu (0.437), Pb (0.14), Ni, Zn (0.95), Hg (0.005). Although the testing methods we used in this study are much more rigorous than other commonly adapted method including TCLP and domestic testing method for solid waste, the trace elemental concentrations are under the criteria for hazardous material set by the TCLP and domestic method. The result seems to suggest that applying the recycled concrete on stream water will be accepatable practice as for as trace elements are concerned. However, the influence of inorganics such as Ca, Mg, Ni and $SO_4^{2-}$ on aquatic ecology should be further examined.

  • Operational failures may occur even though there had been no signs of defect during the manufacturing process, which may be caused due to exposure to environmental stress which had not been addressed properly during the design process. It is thus necessary to perform environmental testing to determine the cause of the failures. Environmental testing is also used to determine whether a materiel has enough tolerance to the environmental stress during its operation. In this study, the method and level for each environmental testing are properly tailored and applied to a fight aircraft intended to operate in ROK (Republic of Korea), based on the MIL-STD-810G Change 1. Since each part of a fighter aircraft may be exposed to each different environment, LRUs (Line Replaceable Units) exposed to similar environment should be tested similarly. In addition, the decision whether to apply specific test and the tailoring technique in test level were derived for natural and induced environments, respectively. As a fight aircraft is assumed to operate in ROK, the tailoring of test methods and test level to fit to the environment in Korean peninsula is necessary. Further research is needed in determining a specific procedure and a specific level in a test method, and also in determining the test sequence, when conducting more than one is needed, because it can alter test results and it hence becomes an essential element in test design.

  • In this study, the test results obtained from the performance tests for CA (Korea Association of Cleaning Air) certificated air cleaners which had been commercially available in Korea from 2003 to 2015 were analyzed. Among the test parameters such as flow rate, particle collection efficiency, clean air delivery rate (CADR), ozone emission, odor removal efficiency and noise level, noise level and CADR were correlated with flow rates. Collection and odor removal efficiencies were 20% higher than the limit of the CA certification. The ozone emissions from the air cleaners were negligible because all the air cleaners were equipped with only HEPA filters, not electrostatic precipitation method which produces ozone.

  • The traditional gold mining in Kulon Progo district, Special Region of Yogyakarta Province produced tailings containing mercury (Hg) from the gold amalgamation process. Mercury accumulated in tailings has 164.19 mg/kg - 383.21 mg/kg in total concentration. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is one of the remediation technologies to reduce waste pollution. Portland cement is one of the additive materials in S/S that effective encapsulates heavy metal waste. The aim of this research is to know the optimum composition of tailings mixture with Portland cement in S/S process. This research used variation of tailings composition. Variation of Portland cement composition with tailing are 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, 30:70, 20:80 and 10:90. The result of this study found that the optimum composition of Portland cement: tailings was 10:90, with compression test of $257ton/m^2$ and TCLP test was 0.0069 mg/L. The compression test results were in accordance to US EPA Standard quality of $35ton/m^2$. TCLP test results meet the standard of Indonesian Government Regulation No. 101 Year 2014 of 0.05 mg/L.

  • A coal mine drainage sludge(designated as CMDS) is mainly generated during physicochemical treatment or electrical purification of the drainage abandoned mine that include dissolved heavy metal. To understand the possibility of an application of the dehydrated CMDS as the landfill cover medium of hygienic a reclaimed ground, an laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the physicochemical and geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS. To improve the geoengineering characteristics of the dehydrated CMDS, the liquid limit, plasticity limit test, compaction method test, strength test, and hydraulic conductivity test ware performed with the lithification material mixed sludge. When the mixed ratio of the sludge and the lithification material was more than 1:06, the compaction method was A method, the moisture content less than 33.5%, the strength of mixed sludge was $8.2kg\;cm^{-2}$, the hydraulic conductivity was $2.7\times10^{-6}cm\;sec^{-1}$, the sludge was up to the landfill standard of US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of prior information about ICU environment on the anxiety and environmental stress of cardiac surgery ICU patients. Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental research design was used. Participants were 60 (control 30, experimental 30) patients who had been admitted to ICU. Prior information about the ICU environment was provided to the experimental group. The anxiety level of subjects was measured by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the stress level of subjects was measured by the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressor Scale (ICUESS). Data were analyzed using a Chi-square test or a Fisher's exact test, independent samples t-test, and paired samples t-test. Results: There was no difference in Anxiety (t=-0.58, p=.563), but there was a significant difference in environmental stress (t=10.46, p<.001). Conclusion: Providing prior information would be an effective nursing intervention to reduce environmental stress.

  • The compressibility of clay has been expressed e-log p' graph. In natural clay, e-log p' graph are changed by deposition condition and chemical cementation as well as Atterberg limits, whereas in reconstituted clay, it is generally known that e-log p’ curve is varied with Atterberg limits. However, e-log p' graph is possible to change according to the reconstituting methods and test conditions. In this study, consolidation tests are performed as various test condition for reconstituted Busan clay. Test results show that the relationship e/$e_L$ and log p' is almost constant with $e_L$. And the compression index obtained from slurry method sample is larger than one obtained from kneading method sample. Intrinsic compression line (ICL) of Busan clay is identical with ICL suggested by Burland.

  • Background: The selection of distributions of input parameters is an important component in probabilistic exposure assessment. Goodness-of-fit (GOF) methods are used to determine the distribution of exposure factors. However, there are no clear guidelines for choosing an appropriate GOF method. Objectives: The outcomes of probabilistic consumer exposure assessment were compared by using five different GOF methods for the selection of input distributions: chi-squared test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S), Anderson-Darling test (A-D), Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). Methods: Individual exposures were estimated based on product usage factor combinations from 10,000 respondents. The distribution of individual exposure was considered as the true value of population exposures. Results: Among the five GOF methods, probabilistic exposure distributions using the A-D and K-S methods were similar to individual exposure estimations. Comparing the 95th percentiles of the probabilistic distributions and the individual estimations for 10 CPs, there were 0.73 to 1.92 times differences for the A-D method, and 0.73 to 1.60 times differences (excluding tire-shine spray) for the K-S method. Conclusions: There were significant differences in exposure assessment results among the selection of the GOF methods. Therefore, the GOF methods for probabilistic consumer exposure assessment should be carefully selected.

  • Objectives: In order to investigate the relation between environmental pollution and its effect on human health in large-scale industrial complex regions, monitoring studies have been conducted since 2003. The main purpose of this Gangneung study is to produce background data which can be compared with several large-scale industrial complex regions such as Ulsan, Sihwa, Banwol, Gwangyang, Yeosu, Pohang and Cheongju Daesan industrial complexes. Methods: In this Gangneung study, 1,007 local residents were recruited and the framework of this study was designed to evaluate and monitor health effects associated with low-level but long-term exposure to environmental pollutants. A survey was performed based on personal questionnaires, medical check-ups, and allergy skin prick tests for twelve common allergens. The authors reviewed the prevalence rate of skin allergens in Gangneung compared with in large-scale industrial areas. The results are summarized as follows. Results: The diagnosis prevalence and medical treatment prevalence of asthma were lower than in industrial complex regions, but allergic rhinitis was higher. The allergy skin test prevalence was 26.0% and the most common allergens were dust mites (D. pteronysinus 16.7% and D. farinae 16.3%). Conclusions: The positive findings of the skin prick test were similar with large-scale industrial complex regions in Korea. Further study is required to find the cause of the regional differences in skin prick prevalence.
