Combustion Characteristics of Technology Demonstration Model for Staged Combustion Cycle Engine (다단연소사이클 엔진 시스템 기술검증시제 연소성능 평가)

  • High performance upper stage engine is necessary for space launch vehicles of geostationary orbit, and staged combustion cycle engine is suitable due to high specific impulse. Technology demonstration model for 9 tonf class staged combustion cycle engine, which is consisted of turbopump, preburner, combustion chamber and supply system, was assembled, and hot-firing test was conducted for three seconds in Upper-stage Engine Test Facility of Naro Space Center. Ignition, combustion and shut down of engine system was performed normally, and its performance parameters were evaluated.

  • Engine test cell should provide controlled test environment to properly verify requirements of engine performance and operational characteristics. However, since test cells cannot be perfectly identical to each other, new test cell requires processes to verify reliability of test results and correct differences through correlation testing using a baseline test cell. This paper studies about what should be considered when correlation testing is performed based on commonalities and differences between turbofan and turboshaft engine. It provides examples of correlation test procedure. In the future, it is expected that this study will help set up a standard that can certify test facility according to engine type.

  • As a secondary stage of the liquid rocket engine development test, turbopump-gas generator powerpack tests are being performed. The schematics of the test hardware and the test facility for the TP+GG coupled test are presented. The results of a preliminary test results for the verification of the propellant supply system of the test facility are also presented. Based on the preliminary tests results, the verification of the propellants supply systems of the facility system was performed.

  • The method suggested in this thesis is the safe and economic method when testing rocket engine because ground test facility copies high altitude. We have decided to use the schematic of testing facility based on already known design method and test result, and we have decided the test condition for ground firing test of solid fuel. In addition the pressure of nozzle exit area is 0.1bar, we have designed the testing facility structure to test in this condition. Moreover, we have designed to reduce the accident probability.

  • For the successful development of the main engine of KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)-III, Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) carried out the experimental study on the subscale model engines. Several types of engines were tested on the Small Liquid Rocket Engine Test Facility. One of the typical test results of a Sub. engine(Sub. Mod.3) is presented here. It uses the Jet A-1 as fuel, liquid oxygen as oxidizer, and Tri-Ethyl Aluminium(TEA1) as ignition agent. The gas pressure feed system is adopted as a feeding mechanism and the design chamber pressure is 200psia. The physical phenomena are described in three regimes(ignition, transient, and steady state) with the pressure, thrust, flowrate and image data. And the pressure oscillation is analyzed in Fourier domain (<500Hz). Then we conclude that in this experiment, the engine shows the characteristic low frequency of 80Hz and it is stable for that frequency of pressure oscillation.

  • Research for developing 9 tonf-class staged combustion cycle engine which is high performance upper stage engine has been conducted. Technical demonstration model of the staged combustion cycle engine was installed in combustion test facility of Naro space center. Combustion tests of Power-pack which consists of pre-burner and turbopump without main combustion chamber and combustion tests of engine have been conducted. The vacuuming process of hydraulic lines is introduced and the characteristics of turbopump and hydraulic lines of engine combustion test are described in this paper.

  • Considering the increase of interest in $H_{2}O_2$ as a rocket propellant, a test facility and a rocket engine have been developed to research in areas of $H_{2}O_2$ mono-propellant propulsion. A detailed design-study of a $H_{2}O_2$ mono-propellant rocket engine of 100-N thrust is presented. Several firings attempted in early stage had some problems with misfire and chamber pressure decrease. Low environmental temperature and impurities included in hydrogen peroxide were considered to be the reasons. Addressing these points resulted in successful firing of the rocket engine and obtained thrust about $100\sim107-N.$

  • Combustion instability, which is one of the most undesirable phenomena in the development of liquid Propellant rocket engine, can cause serious damage to the rocket itself, and must be evaded by all means. Unfortunately, KSR-III rocket went through the combustion instability during engine start at the propulsion test article No.2. To resolve the problem, time sequence has been changed, and the baffle system has been applied. In consequence of the change, stable combustion was achieved.
