The mechanism responsible for liquid crystal (LC) alignment on solid substrates treated with mechanical rubbing or polarized UV is not understood. The results of x-ray reflectivity study of LC alignment on a large number of different alignment layers show that the anisotropy in the surface roughness of the substrate completely determines the LC alignment. The anchoring energy depends on the degree of roughness anisotropy and chemical interactions between the substrate and LC molecules.
It is important to reduce a reflection of light as a solar cell is device that directly converts the energy of solar radiation to electrical energy in oder to improve efficiency of solar cells. The antireflection coating has proven effective in providing substantial increase in solar cell efficiency. This paper investigates the formation of thin film PSi(porous silicon) layer on the surface of crystalline silicon substrates without other ARC(antirefiection coating) layers. On the other hand the formation of $SO_{2}/SiN_x$ ARC layers on the surface of crystalline silicon substrates. After that, the structure of PSi and $SO_2/SiN_x$ ARC was investigated by SEM and reflectance. The formation of PSi layer and $SO_{2}/SiN_x$ ARC layers on the textured silicon wafer result about 5% in the wavelength region from 0.4 to $1.0{\mu}m$. It is achieved on the textured crystalline silicon solar cell that each efficiency is 14.43%, 16.01%.
Piezoelectric nanogenerators are energy harvesting device to convert a mechanical energy into an electric energy using nanostructured piezoelectric materials. This review summarizes works to date on piezoelectric nanogenerators, starting with a basic theory of piezoelectricity and working mechanism, and moving through the reports of numerous nanogenerators using nanorod arrays, flexible substrates and alternative materials. A sufficient power generated from nanogenerators suggests feasible applications for either power supplies or strain sensors of highly integratedl nano devices. Further development of nanogenerators holds promise for the development of self-powered implantable and wearable electronics.
Graphene is a fascinating material for fabricating flexible and transparent devices owing to its thickness and mechanical properties. To utilize graphene as a core material for devices, the transfer process of graphene is an inevitable step. The transfer process can be classified into wet and dry methods depending on the surrounding environment. The adhesion between graphene and a target substrate determines the success or failure of the transfer process. As the surface energy of graphene is an important parameter that provides adhesion, it is useful to estimate the surface energy to understand the mechanisms of the transfer process. However, the exact surface energy of graphene is still disputed because the wetting transparency of graphene depends on the polarity of the liquid and target substrate. Previously reported results use graphene transferred by the wet method. However, there are few reports on the surface energy of graphene transferred by the dry method. In this study, the surface energy of graphene transferred by the wet and dry methods is estimated. Wetting transparency occurs for certain combinations of liquids and substrates. For graphene on a polar substrate, the surface energy decreases by 25 and 35% for the wet and dry transfer methods, respectively. However, the surface energy of graphene on dispersive substrates decreases by ~10% regardless of the transfer method. In conclusion, the surface energy of graphene is $36{\sim}38mJ/m^2$, and differs depending on the transfer method and polarity of the substrate.

Carbon coils could be synthesized using $C_2H_2/H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an incorporated additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The substrate with oxygen incorporation and the substrate without oxygen incorporation were employed to elucidate the effect of substrate on the formation of carbon coils. The characteristics (formation densities, morphologies, and geometries) of the deposited carbon coils on the substrate were investigated. In case of Si substrate, the microsized carbon coils were dominant on the substrate surface. While, in case of oxygen incorporated substrate, the nanosized carbon coils were prevail on the substrate surface. The cause for the different geometry formation of carbon coils according to the different substrates was discussed in association with the different thermal expansion coefficient values between the substrate with oxygen incorporation and the substrate without oxygen incorporation.
Titanium dioxide antireflection (AR) Coating, which is deposited on Si substrates using an organotitanium solution by the spinning technique, has been studied. The coated films on Si substrates were subsequently heated to $450^{\circ}C$. The thickness and index of refraction of films were varied continuousely from $740{\AA}$ to $1380{\AA}$ and from 1.7 to 2.1 respectively as a function of heat treatment temperature and time. Silicon solar cells AR-coated by the spinning technique showed as much as 31% improvement in conversion efficiency over the uncoated cell.
The epitaxial growth of $CeO_2$ films has been investigated on three different substrates-Si(111), $SrTiO_3$(001), and MgO(001)-over wide range of growth parameters using oxygen-plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Pure-phase, single-crystalline epitaxial films of $CeO_2$ (001) have been grown only on $SrTiO_3$(001). We discuss the growth conditions in conjunction with the choice of substrates required to synthe-size this oxide, as well as the associated characterization by menas of x-ray diffraction, reflection high-energy electron diffraction, low-energy electron diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and diffraction. Successful growth of single crystalline $CeO_2$ depends critically on the choice of substrate and is rather insensitive to the growth conditions studied in this investigation. $CeO_2$(001) films on $SrTiO_3$exhibit the sturcture of bulk $CeO_2$ without surface reconstructions. Ti outdiffusion is observed on the films grown temperatures above $650^{\circ}C$.

Controlling the shape of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) is very difficult. In the present work, urchin Ag NPs with different sizes and pod length control have been synthesized successfully in high yield by the concentration of a reducing agent. Unique Ag NPs were observed by TEM and SEM. These nanocrystals exhibit tunable surface plasmon resonance properties from the visible to near-infrared regions. They were applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates using rhodamine 6G (R6G), benzenethiol (BT), and 4-amino benznethiol (4-ABT) molecules. The enhanced local field effect due to the sharp pod length, size, and surface plasmon of the urchin Ag NPs resulted in enhanced SERS properties and can serve as high-sensitivity substrates for SERS measurements.

Zinc oxide(ZnO) was sputtered on various glass and flexible substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate(PET) and polycarbonate(PC). A Q-switched $Nd:YVO_4$ laser with a wavelength of 1,064 nm was used for the direct etching of ZnO films. It was possible to obtain laser etched line patterns on the ZnO films on PC substrate at some specific laser beam conditions. In the flexible substrates, more thermal energy of laser beam is expected to be spreaded for the etching process.
