  • The authors study the asymptotic behavior of radial minimizers of an energy functional associated with ferromagnets and antiferromagnets in higher dimensions. The location of the zeros of the radial minimizer is discussed. Moreover, several uniform estimates for the radial minimizer are presented. Based on these estimates, the authors establish global convergence of radial minimizers.

  • The fundamental frequency of the voiced speech is estimated using the instantaneous frequency based on the symmetric higher order differential energy operator. The instantaneous frequency based on the symmetric higher order energy operator shows better frequency estimation result since it is aligned to the time instance of the signal. The speech is pre-processed by a lowpass filter to remove higher frequency components. Then, it is processed by the instantaneous frequency to obtain the fundamental frequency estimates. The symmetric higher order energy operator has been used as an indicator to determine the voiced/unvoiced speech. The fundamental frequency estimates are further processed by a moving average filter to obtain the monotonically changed estimates. The obtained fundamental frequency estimates have been compared with the spectrogram of the speech to confirm its accuracy.

  • The Firebrick Resistance-Heated Energy Storage (FIRES) concept developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology aims to enhance profitability of the nuclear power industry in the next decades. Studies carried out at Massachusetts Institute of Technology already provide estimates of the potential revenue from FIRES system when it is applied to industrial heat supply, the likely first application. Here, we investigate the possibility of operating a power plant (PP) with a fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor and a closed Brayton cycle. This variant offers features such as enhanced nuclear safety as well as flexibility in design of the PP but also radically changes the way of operating the PP. This exploratory study provides estimates of the revenue generated by FIRES in addition to the nominal revenue of the stand-alone fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor, which are useful for defining an initial design. The electricity price data is based on the day-ahead markets of Germany/Austria and the United States (Iowa). The proposed method derives from the equation of revenue introduced in this study and involves simple computations using MatLab to compute the estimates. Results show variable economic potential depending on the host grid but stress a high profitability in both regions.

  • According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, combustion of petroleum-based and other fossil fuels results in the increasing atmospheric concentrations of $CO_2$ and other greenhouse gases (GHG's) and is a major contributing factor to global warming. This paper includes estimates of the energy and petroleum use and the GHG emissions caused by the transportation sector. It then examines the extent to which diversions to alternative modes may be possible. Estimates are made of the potential reductions in energy and petroleum use and GHG emissions resulting from diversions from conventional modes, to both low-speed urban and high-speed intercity maglev vehicle trips based on "well-to-wheel" (i.e. total-fuel-cycle) calculations.

  • In this paper, we introduce fully discrete mixed discontinuous Galerkin approximations for parabolic problems. And we analyze the error estimates in $l^{\infty}(L^2)$ norm for the primary variable and the error estimates in the energy norm for the primary variable and the flux variable.

  • This paper examines the climatic and technical feasibilities of zero energy buildings in Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and Riyadh. Annual and seasonal energy demands of office buildings of various scales in the above cities were compared. Using optimally tilted rooftop PV panels, solar energy production potentials of the buildings were estimated. Based on the estimates of onsite renewable energy production and building energy consumption, the energy self-sufficiencies of the test buildings were assessed. The economic feasibilities of the PV systems in the four locations were analyzed. Strategies for achieving zero energy buildings are suggested.
