  • The Fuel Test Loop(FTL) which is capable of an irradiation testing under a similar operating condition to those of PWR(Pressurized Water Reactor) and CANDU(CANadian Deuterium Uranium reactor) nuclear power plants has been developed and installed in HANARO, KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). It consists of In-Pile Section(IPS) and Out-of Pile System(OPS). The IPS, which is located inside the pool is divided into 3-parts; the in-pool pipes, the IVA(IPS Vessel Assembly) and the support structures. The test fuel is loaded inside a double wall, inner pressure vessel and outer pressure vessel, to keep the functionality of the reactor coolant pressure boundary. The IVA is manufactured by local company and the functional test and verification were done through pressure drop, vibration, hydraulic and leakage tests. The brazing technique for the instrument lines has been checked for its functionality and performance. An IVA has been manufactured by local technique and have finally tested under high temperature and high pressure. The IVA and piping did not experience leakage, as we have checked the piping, flanges, assembly parts. We have obtained good data during the three cycle test which includes a pressure test, pressure and temperature cycling, and constant temperature.

  • The air flow supplied to a fuel cell system is one of the most significant factors in determining fuel efficiency. The conventional method of controlling the air flow is to fix the oxygen supply at an estimated constant rate for optimal efficiency. However, the actual optimal point can deviated from the pre-set value due to temperature, load conditions and so on. In this paper, the maximum efficiency point tracking (MEPT) algorithm is proposed for finding the optimal air supply rate in real time to maximize the net-power generation of fuel cell systems. The fixed step MEPT algorithm has slow dynamics, thus it affects the overall efficiency. As a result, the variable step MEPT algorithm is proposed to compensate for this problem instead of a fixed one. The complete small signal model of a PEM Fuel cell system is developed to perform a stability analysis and to present a design guideline. For a design example, a 1kW PEM fuel cell system with a DSP 56F807 (Motorola Inc) was built and tested using the proposed MEPT algorithm. This control algorithm is very effective for a soft current change load like a grid connected system or a hybrid electric vehicle system with a secondary energy source.

  • According to the government's policy to demonstrate and expand the renewable energy sources, distributed generators such as PV and WP are installed and operated in distribution systems. However, there are many issues related to power quality problems including over voltage and under voltage of customers. In order to overcome these problems, the electric power company have installed a step voltage regulator (SVR) in primary feeders interconnected with distributed generators, and also have established the technical guidelines for the distributed generators to stabilize the customer voltages in distribution systems. However, it is difficult to maintain the customer voltages within allowable limit. Therefore, this paper reviews the problems of voltage control by SVR in a distribution systems interconnected with a large amount of PV systems, and proposes characteristics of operating range and voltage control limit of the small hydropower generators. Also, with the estimation of the influence to the power system voltages from the voltage control mode of generators, this paper proposes the optimal voltage control algorithm of the small hydropower generators. By programming the proposed algorithm into control simulator of exciter, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm can contribute the voltage stabilization in distribution systems interconnected with large scaled PV systems.

  • The world's first underground repository for low- and intermediate- level radioactive waste (SFR1) has been in operation since 1988. SFR1 can accommodate $1,000m^3$ of radioactive waste per year with 4 chambers and 1 silo with a total capacity of $63,000m^3$ of radioactive waste. With extended operation time of 10 of the 12 nuclear power reactors and dismantling of the other 2 nuclear reactors, more nuclear waste need to be disposed in the future. Therefore, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) submitted a license application for a repository extension (SFR3) that consists of 6 additional rock chambers with a capacity of $108,000m^3$ of radioactive waste and for accommodating 9 boiling water reactor tanks. In this study, plans for the extension SFR3 are presented with the geological, geomechanical and hydrogeological issues to be considered.

  • The back contact solar cell (BCSC) has several advantages compared to the conventional solar cell since it can reduce grid shadowing loss and contact resistance between the electrode and the silicon substrate. This paper presents the effect of the surface texturing of the silicon BCSC by varying the texturing depth or the texturing gap in the commercially available simulation software, ATHENA and ATLAS of the company SILVACO. The texturing depth was varied from $5{\mu}m$ to $150{\mu}m$ and the texturing gap was varied from $1{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$ in the simulation. The resulting efficiency of the silicon BCSC was evaluated depending on the texturing condition. The quantum efficiency and the I-V curve of the designed silicon BCSC was also obtained for the analysis since they are closely related with the solar cell efficiency. Other parameters of the simulated silicon BCSC are as follows. The substrate was an n-type silicon, which was doped with phosphorous at $6{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$, and its thickness was $180{\mu}m$, a typical thickness of commercial solar cell substrate thickness. The back surface field (BSF) was $1{\times}10^{20}\;cm^{-3}$ and the doping concentration of a boron doped emitter was $8.5{\times}10^{19}\;cm^{-3}$. The pitch of the silicon BCSC was $1250{\mu}m$ and the anti-reflection coating (ARC) SiN thickness was $0.079{\mu}m$. It was assumed that the texturing was anisotropic etching of crystalline silicon, resulting in texturing angle of 54.7 degrees. The best efficiency was 25.6264% when texturing depth was $50{\mu}m$ with zero texturing gap in case of low texturing depth (< $100{\mu}m$).

  • This study was conducted to determine the nutritive value of live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and to investigate its effects on milk yield, milk composition and some blood parameters in lactating cows. Six multiparous Holstein cows were allocated to two groups of three cows and assigned randomly to one of two diets in a cross-over experiment. Daily 50 g RumiSacc was top dressed at the p.m. feeding for the treatment group. RumiSacc supplied a high protein and energy with high organic matter digestibility values (83.35%) determined by in vitro enzymatic analysis. Yeast culture supplementation significantly increased milk yield, tended to increase fat yield, protein yield and lactose yield of milk. Methylated fatty acid level of 18:3 (n-3) in milk fat was increased by yeast culture supplementation. The concentrations of methionine, phenyalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan and taurine were significantly increased with dietary inclusion of yeast culture. Live yeast culture supplementation did not affect other performance characteristics, milk quality characteristics and blood parameters. As a conclusion live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) had high nutritive value and positive effects on milk production and some milk quality characteristics in lactating cows under field conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a warm cover for greenhouse with excellent thermal insulation and to propose ways of commercialization of the product. Feathers were used as filling materials because they formed the air layer to enhance insulation. Instead of downs for clothing or other textile products, we used disposed feathers. The developed product covers the outside of the greenhouse to keep the crops warm. It has multiple layers including feathers as filling materials, padding, inside fabric, heat insulation materials and outer fabric. It has proven to improve the insulation ratio. We developed other kinds of warm covers that are applicable to the inside of the greenhouse or the small houses in the greenhouse. Also, R&D system of educational industrial complex enables us to commercialize the products and building marketing strategies for them. This technology contributes to the expansion of energy-saving facilities for farmers, and it can serve the development and spread of various products utilizing feather.

  • Fischer Tropsch reaction is one of the interesting topic for renewable and clean energy. Polymerization of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide with hydrogen over metal supported catalyst can produce long chain hydrocarbons. Synthetic liquid hydrocarbons are promising alternative to fossil fuels. This research work has been focused on the synthesis of Fe based catalyst for Fischer Tropsch reaction. Mesoporous silica (MS) support prepared by a precipitation method using two different washing solution, distilled water (DW) and acid in ethanol solution (ET), and different calcination temperature. Then, Fe/MS was prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation method. All of samples were systematically characterized using various physical and chemical techniques. TEM and XRD analysis were used to ensure that the cubic Ia3d mesostructure is stable after calcination. FTIR spectra are useful to ascertain the existence of template in the support. TPR studies were also used to understand the nature of Fe species and their reducibility. The results reveal that washing the support with distilled water and calcination at $550^{\circ}C$ can efficiently remove the triblock copolymer templates. The existence of template in the support affects the textural properties of all catalyst investigated.

  • Highlighted by recent security breaches including Google, Western Energy Company, and the Stuxnet infiltration of Iranian nuclear sites, Cyber warfare attacks pose a threat to national and global security. In particular, targeted attacks such as APT exploiting a high degree of stealthiness over a long period, has extended their victims from PCs and enterprise servers to government organizations and critical national infrastructure whereas the existing security measures exhibited limited capabilities in detecting and countermeasuring them. As a solution to fight against such attacks, we designed and implemented a security monitoring system, which shares security information and helps cooperative countermeasure. The proposed security monitoring system collects security event logs from heterogeneous security devices, analyses them, and visualizes the security status using 3D technology. The capability of the proposed system was evaluated and demonstrated throughly by deploying it under real network in a ISP for a week.

  • This study was carried out in order to observe how the bay sediment would be changed with microbial treatments and a chemical oxidant like $CaO_2$. The sediment during the treatments was analyzed in terms of pH, ORP, volatile organics content, COD, AVS, T-N, and T-P. With $CaO_2$ treatment, pH was kept over 9.66 and ORP ranged from +4.70~+46.0, which meant an aerobic state meanwhile with the microbial treatment those were worse. In addition the chemical treatment showed better environmental index values than the microbial one: volatile organics content and COD values in the former were 12.9% and 37.9% while those in the latter were 4.5% and 18.7%, respectively. AVS and T-P were 71.1% and 100% versus 56.5% and 85.8%, respectively. However, the microbial treatment was better for T-N(66% higher). On the other hand, both treatment at a time enhanced all the environmental indices but COD meantime pH and ORP values were lower than with the chemical treatment only. Thus additional input of an oxygen generator like $CaO_2$ could improve the environmental state of a bay sediment where the biological treatment is going on.
