Korean species within the genus Astragalus have been taxonomically revised based on herbarium specimens and field examinations. In this study, we recognized the following eight species and one variety: A. laxmannii subsp. laxmannii, A. dahuricus, A. sikokianus, A. uliginosus, A. schelichowii, A. setsureianus, A. mongholicus var. dahuricus, A. mongholicus var. nakaianus, and A. sinicus. Based on recent taxonomic progress with this genus, their scientific names are being reconsidered. A Korean plant, previously recorded as A. adsurgens, is included in the polymorphic taxa A. laxmannii subsp. laxmannii. Astragalus koraiensis was initially described from Gangwon Province as an endemic species, and it is now regarded as conspecific with A. sikokianus. Furthermore, the taxonomic entities and their morphological characteristics have been clarified for A. schelichowii and A. setsureianus, both of which are not well known in Korea. We provide a key to these species and enumerate their synonymies and taxonomic notes.

Plants from the genus Centaurea (C.) (Family: Asteraceae alt. Compositae), widely distributed in Asia, Europe and North America, have traditionally been used in the treatment of various ailments. As a part of our on-going studies on the plants from the genus C. for their phytochemistry and biological activities, extracts of the seeds of Turkish endemic C. species, C. bornmuelleri and C. huber-morathii, were tested for their cytotoxicity towards the CaCo2 colon cancer cell line as well as for the toxicity towards the brine shrimps, using the MTT and the brine shrimp lethality assays, respectively. Among the extracts, the MeOH extract of these plants showed significant toxicity towards the brine shrimps ($LD_{50}=55.2{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;42.4{\times}10^{-2}mg/ml$, respectively). The MeOH extract of both C. species also inhibited the growth of CaCo2 colon cancer cells in the MTT assay ($IC_{50}$=29.9 and 33.0 g/ml, respectively). As the most prominent activities in both assays were observed with the MeOH extracts, it can be assumed that the compound(s) responsible for these activities are polar in nature.
The flora of the vascular plant in Mt. Munsu and Mt. Okseok was listed as 689 taxa; 95 families, 332 genus, 600 species, 93 varieties and 5 forms. Based on the list of rare plants by Korea Forest Service and Korea Forest Research Institute, 16 taxa were recorded. And endangered plant was recorded by 1 taxa, Iris koreana var. albiflora. Based on the list of Korean endemic plant, 44 taxa were recorded. According to the specific plant species by classes, class I has 51 taxa, class II has 33 taxa, class III has 28 taxa, class IV has 12 taxa. In class V, we found Houttuynia cordata, but the species was considered to be worthless because it was planted as an ornamental plant in the area. Naturalized plant species were listed as 27 taxa; 99 families, 22 genus, 26 species, 1 varieties. And naturalization index was 3.9%.
Inter-specific relationships among six species and two varieties, belonging to Scrophularia (Scrophulariaceae), in Korea were re-examined based on both morphological and molecular data. Scrophularia takesimensis, a Korean endemic species, should be separated from S. grayana as an independent species based upon unique morphological characters such as non-winged stems, thickened leaves and glabrous surfaces of leaves, even though they share a lot of other features. It was found that S. grayana is distributed in Sokcho in Korea and along the coast of the East Sea north to far eastern Russia. Although some morphologies of three taxa, S. cephalantha, S. koraiensis var. velutina and S. kakudensis var. microphylla appeared to differ from each other, their ITS DNA sequence data was similar to that of S. kakudensis, suggesting that they might better be designated with the later species. The taxonomic position of S. koraiensis, only found in Korea, has been ambiguous, but ITS DNA sequence data in this study revealed that this species is distinct from S. kakudensis. Consequently, we conclude that the genus Scrophularia in Korea includes five species.

Iris L. is a perennial genus comprising approximately 300 species worldwide, with the greatest number of endemic species occurring in Asia. Iris is one of the largest genera in the family Iridaceae and includes ca. 15 species native to Korea. Although chromosome number change, karyotype restructuring, and genome size variation play an important role in plant genome diversification, understanding the karyotype variation in Korean Iris species has been hampered by the wide range of base chromosome number (x = 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22) reported to date. This study documents the chromosome numbers, karyotype structure and genome size variation in Iris ruthenica K. Gawl., an endangered species in Korea obtained using classic Feulgen staining and flow cytometry. The chromosome number of all investigated plants from the nine populations was 2n = 42. All individuals studied possessed metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. The genome size of the I. ruthenica in eight wild populations ranged from 2.39 pg/1C to 2.45 pg/1C ($2.42{\pm}0.02pg/1C$: $mean{\pm}SD$). This study provides the first report of genome size variation in Iris ruthenica in Korea. This study lays foundation for cytogenetic further analyses employing by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to better understand the chromosomal evolution in this species and in the whole genus.
We used Maximum parsimony and Neighbor-joining to investigate phylogenetic relationship of the genus Thalictrum in Korea with 39 morphological characters. The plant materials were used for ingroup 21 taxa and outgroup 1 taxon including a Korean endemic plant. This study confirmed that Sect. Thalictrum and Sect. Camptonotum formed monophyletic group by 100% and 83% bootstrap values respectively, and Sect. Camptonotum appeared to be Sect. Thalictrum's sister group. Sect. Erythrandra and Sect. Physocarpum formed paraphyletic groups. Sect. Physocarpum except T. osmorhizoides appeared to be polytomy. Sect. Tripterium and Sect. Omalophysa formed an independent clade. The shape of stamen is the important character representing the phylogenetic pattern of the genus Thalictrum; the bat and filiform types might be derived from clavate type. The pollination patterns (entomophily, anemophily), and presence of calyx at flowering time may also be related to the evolution of the Thalictrum flowers.

The genus Chirostoma is endemic from the Mesa Central of Mexico. It is conformed of 18 species and six subspecies. Five species are in some category of risk, because of this, Chirostoma jordani is an excellent model species to implement biotechnologies like gametes cryopreservation. Aim of present study was to evaluate fertilizing capacity of cryopreserved C. jordani sperm, as alternative to conservation and assisted reproduction in this specie and genus. Males and females were collected from wild Atlangatepec dam stock, Tlaxcala State, Mexico. Seminal quality was evaluated in fresh and cryopreserved semen with three cryoprotective agents (CPAs): 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 10% methanol (MeOH), 14% ethylene glycol (EG) and it was determined its post-thaw fertilizing capacity. Sperm motility percentage decreased during cryopreservation process (p < 0.05). There were not significant differences in post-thaw motility percentage between EG (53.5 ± 1.9%) and MeOH (53.3 ± 1.3%), but DMSO (50.3 ± 0.5%) was significantly different (p < 0.05). Results showed that 0.2 μL fresh semen were enough to fertilize 100% oocytes (n = 60). 10 μL DMSO and 5 μL MeOH and EG cryopreserved semen were necessary to fertilize oocytes 100% (n = 60) (p < 0.05). Cryopreservation and fertilization protocol for C. jordani sperm was efficient and it could be used for its assisted reproduction.
To investigate the distribution of vascular plants growing at Mt. Guryong, we surveyed from March in 2016 to October in 2017. The flora of Mt. Guryong was classified as a total of 526 taxa comprising of 87 families, 298 genus, 449 species, 4 subspecies, 63 varieties, 10 forma. Among them, the endemic plants in Korea were investigated as 10 taxa of including Pseudostellaria coreana (Nakai) Ohwi. The Korean rare plants species were investigated as 16 taxa, among them degree of CR investigated as 1 taxa of Cypripedium macranthum Sw., VU investigated as 5 taxa of including Rhododendron micranthum Turcz., degree of LC investigated 9 taxa of including Clematis koreana Kom., degree of DD investigated 1 taxa of Adenophora grandiflora Nakai. Endemic plants were investigated as 14 taxa of including seudostellaria coreana (Nakai) Ohwi and The floristic special plants were a total of 84 taxa such as 2 taxa in degree V(in cluding Polypodium virginianum L.), 7 taxa in degree IV (including Anemone reflexa Steph. & Willd.), 21 taxa in degree III(including Celtis aurantiaca Nakai), 22 taxa in degree II (including Thelypteris phegopteris (L.) Sloss.) and 31 taxa in degree I (including Cimicifuga simplex (DC.) Turcz.) was carried out to provide basic data. The naturalized plants were investigated as 37 taxa of including Chenopodium ficifolium Smith., Thlaspi arvense L., Rumex crispus L. and the percentage of urbanization index was 11.53%, the naturalized ratio was 6.99% respectively.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a life-threatening systemic infection caused by a protozoa of the genus leishmania and transmitted by sandfly. We report the first case of visceral leishmanaisis in Korea. The patient was a one-year-old girl admitted with the symptoms of fever, abdominal distension. pancytopenia, and purpura. She traveled to Argentina 5 months ago, and has had symptoms such as fever and pale appearance. Laboratory findings were: WBC, 12.680/$mm^3$; Hg, 3.7g/dL; platelet, 100K; total bilirubin, 1.2mg/dL; AST/ALT, 48/10 U/L. CT scan and MRI showed hepato-splenomegaly. On laparotomy, excision of an accessory spleen and splenic hilar lymph nodes were performed. Many amastigotes were microscopically identified in histiocytes from the biopsy tissues. Sodium stibogluconate was administrated for 2 weeks, which did not relieve the symptoms. After administration of the additional Amphotericin B for 3 weeks, symptoms were improved.

Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae Kitam. is an endemic taxon of Korea and is protected by law as an endanger taxon. The genetic information of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae is unavailable in Genbank. Here we sequenced chloroplast genome of A. altaicus var. uchiyamae. The cp-genome of Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae was 152,446 bps in size: LSC was 84,240 bps, IR 25,005 bps, SSC 18,196 bps. The cp-genome contains 112 genes and 21 introns consisted of 79 protein coding genes(PCGs), 4 RNA genes, and 29 tRNA genes, with 20 group II introns and one group I intron. There were three pseudo-genes including ${\psi}$-ycf1, ${\psi}$-rps19, and ${\psi}$-trnT_GGU. Eighteen genes, five introns, and parts of two genes and an intron are found within the IR, which has two copies. The cp-DNA of Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae is distinguished from A. spathulifolius, only known cp-genome of the genus Aster, by 172 SNP in genic regions of 43 PCGs and 21 indels in 11 PCGs and SSU. The chloroplast genome sequence was deposited at GenBank (KX35265).
