  • In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.

  • Remote handling manipulators are widely used for performing hazardous tasks, and it is essential to ensure the reliable performance of such systems. Toward this end, tendon-driven mechanisms are adopted in such systems to reduce the weight of the distal parts of the manipulator while maintaining the handling performance. In this study, several approaches for the design of a gripper system for a tendon-driven remote handling system are introduced. Basically, this gripper has an underactuated spring mechanism that is combined with a slave manipulator triggered by a master operator. Based on the requirements under the specified tendon-driven mechanism, the connecting position of the spring system on the gripper mechanism and kinematic influence coefficient (KIC) analysis are performed. As a result, a suitable combination of components for the proper design of the target system is presented and verified.

  • In order to figure out the future drought characteristics of the Jeonju plains, the major crop production area in Korea, daily agricultural drought indexes based on soil water balance were calculated for the relevant 12.5 km by 12.5 km grid cell using the weather data generated by the RCP8.5 climate scenario during 1951-2100. The calculations were grouped into five climatological normal years, the past (1951-1980), the present (1981-2010), and the three futures (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100). Results showed that the soil moisture conditions in early spring, worst for both the past and present normal years, will ameliorate gradually in the future and the crop water stress in spring season was projected to become negligible by the end of this century. Furthermore, the drought frequency in early spring was projected to diminish, resulting in rare occurrence of spring drought by that time. However, the result also showed that the soil moisture conditions during the summer season (when most crops grow in Jeonju plain) will deteriorate and the drought incidence will be more frequent than in the past or present period.

  • This study attempted to establish the optimal conditions for storage of spring kimchi cabbage to stably control supply and demand. To this end, this study stored kimchi cabbages in various manners for different periods and compared the quality characteristics of kimchi using these cabbages. According to the results, pre-drying with photocatalytic and pre-cooling treatments showed average selectivity loss rates of 18.83 and 21.37%, respectively, which were lower than those of other treatments. Spring kimchi cabbages were stored for 15 weeks under various conditions, and the kimchi was stored for 4 weeks at $4^{\circ}C$. After ripening, each kimchi was analyzed for their soluble solid content, pH, acidity, and salinity. The average pH of kimchi was 4.60 and tended to rise, whereas average acidity was 0.38% and fell by 0.24 to 0.31% as the storage period was extended. Extension of the storage period caused decreases in soluble solid content and salinity, and the number of lactic acid bacteria decreased due to increased pH and reduced acidity (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation showed that all experts and non-professionals preferred kimchi treated by precooling compared to any other treatment.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the seasonal changes in nutrient composition of pasture, voluntary intake and digestibility of sheep grazing an introduced Leymus chinensis pasture located in western Jilin Province, China. The whole-plant of L. chinensis and the samples simulating ingestion by sheep (simulating sample) were collected in spring (May, 2004), summer (July, 2004), autumn (September, 2004) and the end of winter (April, 2005). The contents of gross energy (GE), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and alkanes were determined. Voluntary intake and apparent digestibility of the nutrients in each season were also examined using 6 mature Chinese Northeast Merino ewes (differed among the seasons) grazing on a paddock of 1 ha size. The apparent digestibilities of GE, dry matter (DM), OM, CP, NDF and ADF of L. chinensis were significantly greater (p<0.05) in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. Metabolizable energy (ME) content was 12.13, 11.62, 8.66 and 10.40 MJ/kg DM for L. chinensis in spring, summer, autumn and winter respectively, and the corresponding voluntary feed intakes were 91, 119, 59 and 58 g/d per kg metabolic weight ($LW^{0.75}$). The ME contents and DM intakes in autumn and winter were significantly lower than in spring and summer (p<0.05). The intake of L. chinensis pasture was sufficient to provide ME requirements for maintenance by the dry ewes in all the seasons, but inadequate for maintenance protein requirement in winter. • To find out the effect of different patterns of nitrogen and potassium distribution on dry matter yield and botanical composition of temperate pastures, a field experiment was conducted with 6 treatments replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. It was lasted from September, 1986 to October, 1989 at the Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In early spring, winter hardiness, growth vigour, cold damage and coverage of grasses with 30% dressing of the total amount of N and K20 fertilizer in spring and at the 4th cutting time respectively were better than those of the other treatments. 2. Average dry matter yield for 3 years with heavy dressing in spring and at the 1st cutting time(l1, 187 kg DM/ha) was much more increased by 9% than that of the equally fertilized treatment(l0,24lkg DM/ha). 3. Changes in the botanical composition showed, in general, the same tendency for all treatments except equal N and K20 distribution. However, grassland vegetation with heavy dressing in spring and at the 1st cutting time was changed into relatively good botanical composition with 76.7% grasses, 22.3% legumes and 1.0% herbs at the end of the experiment. 4. By DM yield and botanical composition treatment 3(40-30-15-0-1570) seemed to be an optimal nitrogen and potassium distribution pattern in a temperate pasture.

  • A method to derive the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender actuator is developed here. The constitutive relations are derived from the geometry, material properties of the actuator. The very complicated constitutive relations can be easily calculated by use of symbolic function in Mathematica. The developed program can calculate the constitutive relations for the unimorph bender made by attaching a short piezoelectric beam on a longer metal beam. The program can also calculate the constitutive relations of a piezoelectric bender with spring at its end.

  • An analysis is presented on the stability of an elastic cantilever column subjected to a concentrated follower force as to the influence of the elastic restraint and a tip mass at the free end. The elastic restraint is formed by the rotatory springs. For this purpose, the governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton's principle, and the critical flutter loads and frequencies are obtained from the numerical evaluation of the eigenvalue functions of the considered system.

  • This paper studies on dynamic and stability behavior of a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam under the action of a nonconservative force with an emphasis on the influence of surface properties on divergence and flutter instability. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory incorporating surface effects, a governing equation for a clamped-elastically restrained nanobeam is derived according to Hamilton's principle. The characteristic equation is obtained explicitly and the force-frequency interaction curves are displayed to show the influence of the surface effects, spring stiffness of the elastic restraint end on critical loads including divergence and flutter loads. Divergence and flutter instability transition is analyzed. Euler buckling and stability of Beck's column are some special cases of the present at macroscale.
