  • In this short communication we discuss the bias problem of C4.5 in split variable selection and suggest a method to reduce the variable selection bias among categorical predictor variables. A penalty proportional to the number of categories is applied to the splitting criterion gain of C4.5. The results of empirical comparisons show that the proposed modification of C4.5 reduces the size of classification trees.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze, based upon agency theory, empirically the relevance between ownership structure and corporate performance. In this study, samples are 285 firms listed in Korea stock exchage from 1990 to 1994. The results of this empirical test are summarized as follows : Insider-equity ratio of firm in Korea has been positively correlated with performance of corporate. This study intended to present the desirable implecations for seperation of ownership and management.

  • This paper deals with the theoretical prediction and cyclic variation of combustion characteristics in a four stroke, single0cylinder, diesel engine. Theoretical calculations employed a simple empirical model of analysis of energy equation for the thermodynamic system of engine cylinder. The cyclic variation of combustion characteristics is investigated, in term of frequency distribution and standard deviation of peak characteristics, as obtained by combustion analyzer system. The results of theoretical prediction are shown to be in close agreement with the experimental data. The effect of fuel injection timing, engine speed, cooling water temperature, and the compression ratio on the cyclic variations of combustion characteristics were discussed.

  • Since 1982, the auditee have selected the auditor under market mechanism. Under the system on which the auditor have been chosen by client, there have been chances for opinion shopping, etc. To prevent those, some audit regulations have been introduced. Prior studies have documented the positive effect of these audit regulations. Those studies, however, had some limitations which they dealt with just short event period for empirical tests. This study examines the effect of Auditor Turnover Ratio on the Quality of Earnings using a sample of firms that were listed on Korea Exchange(KRX) from 1995 to 2004. The firms that change auditor frequently are expected to have low disclosure quality. The CEO with the incentives to manage or manipulate earnings could accomplish this purpose by replacing existing auditor with more friendly auditor, which could result in eventually lowering earning's quality of the firm. The result of empirical test shows that the accrual quality of firms which have high auditor turnover ratio are significantly lower than those of firms which have low ratio. This result is consistent with our hypothesis that the more frequently a firm changes auditor, the lower the quality of earning is. This evidence might give the implication to policy-making supervisor.

  • The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test through coring is widely used to determine the reinforcement effect of the ground with grouting. However, the UCS test through coring can disturb the ground, is expensive and takes a lot of time to prepare the specimen. In this study, the factors affecting UCS of microfine cement grouted sand are evaluated and an empirical equation of UCS of microfine grouted sand is suggested. It is observed that UCS increases linearly until 28 days, however, the increasing rate of strength decreases sharply after that 28 days. The W/C ratio is dominant factor influencing UCS and UCS increases exponentially with the decrease of water/cement (W/C) ratio. Also, UCS increases linearly with increasing the relative density ranging from 30% to 70% and with decreasing median particle size. However, in case of W/C ratio=1 and K6 ($D_{50}=0.47mm$), UCS is lower than that of K4 ($D_{50}=1.08mm$) and K5 ($D_{50}=0.80mm$) due to filtration effect. Based on the experimental results, the empirical equation of UCS of microfine cement grouted sand can be expressed as the function of median particle size ($D_{50}$), porosity (n) and W/C ratio.

  • This study analyzed the determinants of capital structure based on the financial statements of agricultural corporations disclosed on the DART(data analysis, retrieval and transfer system) of the Financial Supervisory Service since 2011, when the Korea international financial reporting standards (K-IFRS) was introduced. There have been many empirical studies on the capital structure so far, but there are no studies targeting agricultural corporations. The sample period of agricultural corporations was from 2015 to 2019, with the debt ratio as the dependent variable, and among the variables suggested as meaningful in existing empirical studies, ROA(profitability), SIZE(corporate size), LIQ(liquidity), TA(tangible asset ratio), FA(fixed long-term suitability ratio), and GROWTH(growth potential) were selected as independent variables and panel data analysis was performed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the debt ratio decreased as the ROA and SIZE of agricultural corporations increased. This can be interpreted as supporting the pecking order theory rather than the static trade-off theory in the relationship between the ROA and SIZE of Korean agricultural corporations with the capital structure. In addition, it was found that the debt ratio increased as the FA increased. These results suggest that Korean agricultural corporations need to establish a financing policy in consideration of ROA, SIZE, and FA.

  • The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) has been designed to remove the released decay heat during the accident by means of the condensation heat transfer phenomenon to guarantee the safety of the nuclear power plant. The heat removal performance of the PCCS is mainly governed by the condensation heat transfer of the steam-air mixture. In this study, the heat removal performance of the PCCS was evaluated by using the MARS-KS code with a new empirical correlation for steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas. A new empirical correlation implemented into the MARS-KS code was developed as a function of parameters that affect the condensation heat transfer coefficient, such as the pressure, the wall subcooling, the noncondensable gas mass fraction and the aspect ratio of the condenser tube. The empirical correlation was applied to the MARS-KS code to replace the default Colburn-Hougen model. The various thermal-hydraulic parameters during the operation of the PCCS follonwing a large-break loss-of-coolant-accident were analyzed. The transient pressure behavior inside the containment from the MARS-KS with the empirical correlation was compared with calculated with the Colburn-Hougen model.

  • The protection of adjacent structures in urban excavation has been an important issue. But the research on the interaction between ground movements and adjacent structure has been scarce, therefore this study was necessitated. Current design practice for the prediction of excavation-induced ground movements heavily rely on empirical method. In this study, damage levels of brick building are examined closely by means of angular distortion, deflection ratio, horizontal strain. The results of numerical analysis indicated that the movement of actual building was 60∼65% of the ground movement, while angular distortion was 45∼65%. Also numerical analysis for the assessment of brick building can be applied to the building protection at various construction stages.

  • This paper discusses the optimization of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process parameters for joining Aluminum alloy (AA6061-T6) with Magnesium alloy (AZ31B) sheets. Prior to optimization an empirical relationship was developed to predict the Tensile Shear Fracture Load (TSFL) incorporating the four most important FSSW parameters, i.e., tool rotational speed, plunge rate, dwell time and tool diameter ratio, using response surface methodology (RSM). The experiments were conducted based on four factor, five levels central composite rotatable design (CCD) matrix. The maximum TSFL obtained was 3.61kN, with the tool rotation of 1000 rpm, plunge rate of 16 mm/min, dwell time of 5 sec and tool diameter ratio of 2.5.

  • This paper presents a study on the flexural rigidity of reinforced high strength concrete beams. Thirty six beams with different compressive strength of concrete, tensile reinforcement ratio, compressive reinforcement ratio, and pattern of loadings(1 point loading and 2 points loading) were tested to evaluate the effective moment of inertia. According to the experimental results, the eqation(1) proposed by ACI code for the effective moment of inertia overestimated that of simply supported reinforced high strength concrete beams. Thus, in this paper, an empirical equation(3) is proposed as a lower bound of 90% confidence limit to estimate the effective moment of inertia of simply supported reinforced high strength concrete beams.
