A Study on the Elliptical Gear Inspection System Using Machine Vision (머신비전을 이용한 타원형 기어 검사 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • Elliptical gears are used in the oval flowmeter and oval flow meter inspects volume of water thanks to space by the elliptical shape. The purpose of this study is to judge accuracy of processing of the elliptical gear and develop inspection system using machine vision. Demand of machine vision is increasing while the factory automation is spreading and principle factor in-process inspection. But, gear inspection using the machine vision rarely used because of complex shape of gear. In this study, it seems possible that elliptical gear is inspected by inspection software using machine vision and inspection program can judge accuracy of processing of the elliptical gear designed this study.

Design of Elliptical Gears for Wire Cutting (타원형 기어의 와이어커팅을 위한 설계)

  • The CAD model of a elliptical gear for wire cutting has been developed. The rolling contact of pitch ellipses whose rotation axes coincide with their focus has been analyzed, and the perimeter of the pitch ellipse has been divided into equal-length segments by the number of teeth. A master tooth profile, which is a composite curve of circular arcs that represents involute, has been introduced. The elliptical gear has been designed by imposing the master tooth on the divided points of the pitch ellipse, and a full fillet has been achieved between neighbour teeth. Thus, the whole profile of an elliptical gear is a composite curve of arcs only, and consequently NC codes for wire cutting can be easily generated. Furthermore, a computer simulation program is developed to verify the mesh of the elliptical gear.

Design of Elliptical Lobe Type Gear with Involute Profile (타원계 엽형기어의 설계 및 동특성에 관한 연구)

  • Noncircular gears have been used for obtaining the modified anglualr velocity ratio between parallel axes. The elliptical gear, which is a kind of noncircular gears, makes use of ellipse as a pitch curve, and is applied for the measurement of the discharge of liquid. The applications of an elliptical gear are more advantageous than any other mechanism as like a crank-slider linkage or a cam mechanism in view of the accuracy and the reliability to transmit the prescribed motion. In this paper, acceding to the theoretical involute tooth profile, two pairs of the elliptical gears were manufactured by using CNC wire electronic discharge machine. The proper ranges of the operating pressure angle and of module not to generate under cutting are studied on the change of the eccentricity, because it is the eccentricity of the pitch curve that determines most of the characteristics of the elliptical gear and then the vibration analysis is executed for the verification of harmonious rotating.

  • Elliptical gear is used as a rotor of oval flowmeter. The elliptical gear can assist water flow-rate measurement by the space of the elliptical shape. Presently, elliptical gears have been processed using hob tool imported from Japan. But if it were not for the technical cooperation with Japan company, the Elliptical gears can't be processed. The purpose of this study is developing a domestic technology for elliptical gears and overcoming the dependence of foreign technical skills. It will bring the import substitution effect. In case of pressure angle $20^{\circ}$, the elliptical gears have an interference of tooth. The increase of pressure angle makes the root of a tooth thick and the top of tooth thin. By results of this study, tooth of elliptical gear was designed and verified through the 2D and 3D simulation.

  • This present paper describes a mathematical model of profile shifted elliptical gears, and this model is based on the concepts of envelope theory and conjugate geometry between the blank and the straight-sided rack cutter. The geometric model of the rack cutter includes working regions generating involute curves and fillets for trocoidal curves, and furthermore the addendum modified coeff. is considered for avoiding undercutting. The addendum modified coeff. is changed linearly along with pitch curves and must be the same absolute value at both major semi-axis and minor semi-axis. If undercutting is at all pronounced, the undercut tooth not only are weakened in strength, but lose a small portion of the involute adjacent to the base circle, then this loss of involute may cause a serious reduction in the length of contact. A very effective method of avoiding undercutting is to use the so-called profile shifted gearing. Non-undercutting condition is examined with the change of eccentricity and addendum modified coeff. in elliptical gears and then the minimum number of tooth is proposed not to gernerate undercutting phenomenon.

  • This paper presents a step-by-step design of noncircular gears.   • Milli-scale crawling robots have been widely studied due to their maneuverability in confined spaces. For successful crawling, the crawling robots basically required to fulfill alternating gait with elliptical foot trajectory. The alternating gait with elliptical foot trajectory normally generates both forward and upward motion. The upward motion makes the aerial phase and during the aerial phase, the forward motion enables the crawling robots to proceed. This simultaneous forward and upward motion finally results in fast crawling speed. In this paper, we propose a novel alternating mechanism to make a crab-inspired eight-legged crawling robot. The key design strategy is an alternating mechanism based on double four-bar linkages. Crab-like robots normally employs gear-chain drive to make the opposite phase between neighboring legs. To use the gear-chain drive to this milli-scale robot system, however, is not easy because of heavy weight and mechanism complexity. To solve the issue, the double-four bar linkages has been invented to generate the oaring motion for transmitting the equal motion in the opposite phase. Thanks to the proposed mechanism, the robot crawls just like the real crab with the crawling speed of 0.57 m/s.

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has a high discharge per cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used as lubrication oil of engines and the hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, it has been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor design. In this study, to obtain an optimal gerotor with an ellipse-elliptical involute-ellipse combined lobe shape, an automatic program was developed for calculating performance parameters and drawing a gerotor profile. An oil pump was assembled with the optimal gerotor together with the port used at the actual field and CFD analysis was performed on this assembly using Ansys-CFX. A performance test for the oil pump was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from the theoretical analysis and the CFD analysis.

  • A gerotor can be manufactured in a miniature size because it has a high discharge per cycle and a simple structure. Gerotors are widely used for the lubrication oil of an engine and as the hydraulic source of an automatic transmission. Recently, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have come to the fore in the automobile industry, and it has been necessary for better fuel efficiency to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps through the optimal design of the gerotor and port shape. In this study, gerotors were generated based on the equations derived for a lobe shape with multiple profiles (ellipse 1-elliptical involute-ellipse 2). The ranges of the design parameters were considered to prevent a cusp and loop. In addition, the optimal lobe shape was obtained by determining the influence of the lobe shape on the performances (flow rate, irregularity, etc.), according to the values of the design parameters.
