  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of learning cycle model on the changes of electricity conceptions of elementary students. Four classes in forth grade of an elementary school in Busan were selected and two of them were served as experimental group and the others as control group. The experimental group were taught the unit of "Light an electric bulb" in elementary science textbook with teaching model based on teaming cycle and the control group with traditional teaching style. The instruction effects were analyzed through pre and post-test results using questionnaire on the electricity. The results of pre-test showed that there was not a significant difference between experimental group and control group at .05 level, so two groups could be regarded as homogeneous. The mean score of experimental group was significantly higher than that of control group on the post-test at .05 level. And within-group comparison revealed that both groups made improvement on the mean score and that the improvement of each group had significant difference at .05 level. Above results said that the teaching model based on learning cycle, which focuses on hands-on activity and considers each student as an active subject, was more effective than traditional teaching style in improving the formation of scientific conceptions on electricity.ectricity.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the influence of mother's characteristics on elementary school students' attitudes toward science. Elementary school students (N=667) and their mothers (N=681) were selected from three other regions, big city, small city, and country. Attitudes toward science and supports for scientific activities were measured by two kinds of instruments. The instrument for the measurement of attitudes toward science includes three scales: cognition about value of science, affection toward science & science learning, and cognitive participation in scientific activities. And the instrument to measure parents' support for scientific activities includes two scales: indirect support and direct support. This research showed that mothers' various characteristics resulted in a difference in students' attitudes toward science. And there were positive correlations between students' attitudes toward science and their mothers' attitudes toward science and support for scientific activities. Also mothers' attitudes toward science and support for scientific activities affected students' attitudes. Especially, mothers' personal interest in science and her mental and physical supports for children's scientific activities had a close relation with students' attitudes toward science.

  • In this study, we investigated the elementary school students' perceptions of the scientific and technological professions by using the 'drawing scientific and technological workplaces'. The subjects were 401 students of 4th and 6th grades at three elementary schools in Seoul. The results revealed that many students drew the interiors of laboratories or factories as scientific and technological workplaces, and explained the nature of the work- place, but students' images were superficial and general. Most students' drawings also exhibited the stereotypical images of science and technology as androcentric and negative perceptions. Students were mainly inclined to perceive that the works relevant to science were experiments, and the works relevant to technology were productions and repairs. Most students answered more than two examples of scientific and technological professions, but their responses were not various and were biased toward basic scientists, blue-collar workers, and repairers. Educational implications of these findings were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and the level of fourth grade elementary students' system thinking when they learn the unit of "Journey of Water" in terms of four key elements of system thinking such as understanding of the structure of a system, non-linearity and cyclic features, inter-relations and feedback between system properties, and temporal and invisible aspects of a system. Data included students' worksheets and their responses to a set of Likert-scaled and written assessment items on water cycle. The results showed that the level of students' system thinking did not have any hierarchy in relation to the key elements of water cycle system. In addition, the aspects of individual student's system thinking on its sub-elements were different from each other. Also, there were core ideas of system thinking which were intensively considered according to a given context to understand a complex systemic subject. When students learn water cycle, understanding of non-linearity and inter-relations were weaker compared with other key elements of system thinking. Therefore, if these two factors are taught in advance, it can promote understanding of whole system of water cycle.

  • Students' engagement is very important for effect science learning. Multidimensional approaches on students' engagement defines engagement in three ways which includes cognitive, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. Based on the multidimensional approaches on students' engagement, this study identified latent groups of elementary students characterized by patterns of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement in science classes. This study also compared students' perceptions of their engagement in general science classes and small-group activities by the latent groups. 377 elementary students were involved in this study. 5-scale Likert survey were used in order to investigate students' engagement in science classes. Latent class analysis using Mplus program identified 3 latent groups of students engagement in science classes: Highly engaged, moderately engaged, and minimally engaged in three ways of engagement. The mean scores of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement were significantly different by three latent groups. In addition, there were significant difference in students perceptions on participating experiments activities and carefully listening of teacher among latent groups. However, there was no significant difference in students' perceptions on their actions during small-group activities. Educational implications were discussed.

  • In this study, elementary school students' responses toward a discrepant event about a float-or-sink problem were investigated through semi-structured interviews. Initial participants were 61 fifth-grade students from two elementary schools. After excluding the students who did not possess the target misconception from the results of a preconception test and who were not willing to participate in an interview, 31 students (14 males and 17 females) were finally interviewed by two teacher-interviewers. During the interviews, students were first provided with a hands-on experiment which was the same as the situation in the preconception test, and then they were asked about believability of the discrepant event, inconsistency between the discrepant event and their existing conceptions, and belief change after experiencing the discrepant event. Interviews were audio- and video-taped, and then were transcribed by two interviewers. After analyzing the interview transcriptions, we found four types of students' responses; rejection, uncertainty, peripheral belief change, and belief change. We also found that belief change response type should be classified into three distinctive subtypes; belief decrease, ad-hoc belief change, and analytical-abductive belief change.
