This study was designed to explore problem solving process to earth science area by elementary science gifted children, which compared and analyzed the questionnaires and problem solving to earth science area by gifted Science education center, Seoul National University Of Education, The analyzed results showed difference by gender that in the science study level at the time of entrance to the gifted Science education center, male students was the highest in the middle school as 37.5%, and female students in the elementary 6th grade as 61.5%. And male students were investigated to do more precedent study than female students. Secondly, in the problem solving process of earth science related problems, males made most use of problem solving process area(30.3%), and females symbolizing (27.5%) area. Thirdly, comparison of reasoning technology in problem solving process by gender indicated that both sexes made the most use of analytical reasoning (male 62.0%, female 53.6%) to solve problems.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of scientific program for gifted elementary students using metacognition on learning-flow and lingual interaction. For the purpose, the two classes for elementary science of P Institute for Gifted Education located in Pusan were assigned to experimental and control groups, respectively. The experimental and controls groups received eight sessions applying a program for scientifically gifted students using metacognition and same program without using it, respectively. The learning-flow test and the lingual interaction observed among students and between teacher and students pre and post program were compared and analyzed. The results shows that there was no significant difference between pretest and posttest in experimental group, indicating that learning-flow is not a construct obtained by short-term using of metacognition. For the lingual interactions, however, the amounts of conversation and the ratio of high level conversation in experimental group were 1.6 and 1.5 times higher than those in control group. This suggests that the lingual interaction may be varied among classes even with same experiments, by instruction method. The lingual interaction is not active in control group where the experimental results may be obtained easily only with sincere attitude while, in experimental group, questions using metacognition and providing intellectual stimulation is continuously presented, leading to high level of lingual interaction, therefore it is considered that the development of scientific program for gifted elementary students using these advantages is needed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of science instruction using integrative educational model on academic achievement and scientific attitude in gifted classes on elementary science. Integrative educational model (hereafter referred as IEM) was developed by synthesizing the findings from brain research, the new physics, general systems theory, and educational psychology. 77 6th graders of B Metropolitan City's Elementary Gifted Education Center were took part in this study. The experimental group, consisting of 39 students, was applied to the instruction using IEM, while the comparison group, 38 students, was applied to instructor- led instruction. The results of this study were as follows: First, the science instruction using IEM had a positive effect on improving achievement in gifted classes on elementary science. Second, the science instruction using IEM had an influence on inquisitiveness and openness of the lower domains of learners' scientific attitude. Third, the science instruction using IEM had a positive response to learners' interest, comprehensibility about lesson contents, and ability to concentrate on classes.
In the 21st century, there will be a robot revolution. Only several years ago, industrial robots were the mainstream in the robot market; however, diverse type of robots are currently entering into our daily lives for various purposes, and the robot that thinks and behaves very similarly to human will appear in the near future. However, there is a critical view about the robot period. This means that the robot revolution will change even the framework of our entire society and human life style, and it is necessary to have robot education. It is necessary to start robot education in the elementary school curriculum with a view to enhancing interest in basic science and scientific technology and cultivating creative talents who may adapt themselves to a robotic society. However, there is no systematic robot curriculum owing to insufficient perception of the need of robot education and the educational utilization of robots. Under these circumstances, robot education is largely dependent on education for students with special talents and aptitudes run by private organizations. This paper conducted the following research in order to develop a robot curriculum in education for the gifted elementary students of computer science. First, the paper identified problems by analyzing the robot curriculum from a micro perspective after selecting three organizations that are relatively well perceived out of private organizations that operate robot education for the gifted elementary students of computer science. Second, the paper developed a robot curriculum in education for the gifted elementary students of computer science based on the framework of a robot curriculum run by private sector. Third, the validity of the robot curriculum developed in this paper was verified by a professional group comprising mainly persons in charge of robot curriculum development at private sector and lecturers for robot education for the gifted elementary students of computer science.
In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the analogies, the mapping understanding, and the mapping errors on saturated solution of scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. Fifth graders (n=60) at four scientifically-gifted education institutes in Seoul and/or Gyeonggi province and fifth graders (n=91) at three elementary schools in Seoul were selected and assigned to the scientifically-gifted group and the general group respectively. After the students of each group performed the experiment and were taught about the target concept in the first class, they administered the test on the self-generating analogies on the target concept in the second class. The results revealed that the students in the scientifically-gifted group made more analogies, especially verbal/pictorial, structural/functional, enriched, and higher systematic ones, and had deeper understanding of the analogy than those in the general group. The numbers of the shared attributes included in the student-generated analogies and the scores of the mapping understanding of the students in the scientifically-gifted group were significantly higher than those in the general group. The students in the scientifically-gifted group had fewer mapping errors than those in the general group. However, not a few students in the scientifically-gifted group had at least one mapping error. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

This study investigated and compared orientations toward scientific inquiry learning among general and science-gifted elementary students. It also investigated and compared the relationship between their orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and their coping strategies for anomalous situations. To realize this, 61 general elementary students and 53 science-gifted elementary students in Seoul were selected, and questionnaires were administered to investigate their orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and coping strategies for anomalous situations. In addition, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted individually with some of the general and science-gifted students. The results showed that among orientations toward scientific inquiry learning, regardless of grade level, the general students were most likely to possess 'concept understanding' and second most likely to exhibit 'scientific practice'. On the other hand, the science-gifted students demonstrated the highest frequency of 'scientific practice', with 'concept understanding' and 'complexity' also being relatively common. 'Activity driven' was found only among some of the general students and 'engineering practice' was found only among some of the science-gifted students. 'Process skills' were not found. No clear relationships between orientations toward scientific inquiry learning and coping strategies for anomalous situations were found. However, some differences in the choice of coping strategies for anomalous situations between the general and science-gifted students were discovered, even when they had the same orientations toward scientific inquiry learning. The educational implications of these findings were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate for gifted elementary students in science the feature of character, life goals and happiness, and the effect relationship on happiness based on the relationship between factors. For this, independent t-test, multi-linear regression analysis and hierarchical regression were conducted. The results from this study are as follows. First, scientifically gifted elementary students show higher level of responsibility, ethics, positive self-understanding and contribution goal, but lower in material and image goal than general students. Second, character, life goal and happiness are correlated. Third, female students rather than male students and students with consideration/service character have intrinsic goals. While, the students with higher level of consideration/service and lower level of sympathy show extrinsic goals. The higher the level of consideration/service and the lower of self-control they have the higher their happiness are. Fourth, as scientifically gifted elementary students have more consideration and relationship goal, their happiness go up. While, the more they have self-growth and material goal, the lower the happiness. Fifth, the character of scientifically gifted elementary students is the factor that explains the effect on happiness more easily than life goal, relatively. The factor of life goal mediates the consideration/service and happiness. In conclusion, I hope that this study contribute to raise the happiness of scientifically gifted elementary students, and considerate the character education and counseling program for character development.
The purpose of this study was to analyze science gifted students' creativity subscales. The Torrance Tests of Creativity Thinking(TTCT) were administered to 385 science gifted students from 2006 to 2010 for this study. The results were as follows: First, fluency correlated highly with originality, and elaboration also highly correlated with abstractness of titles. All of the correlation coefficients of the variables with resistance to premature closure were high. Second, the elaboration scores were higher than other variables, and abstractness of titles scores and resistance to premature closure scores were lower than other variables regardless of regions and gender. There was no significant difference according to regions, but the elaboration scores of female science gifted students were significantly higher than male science gifted students'. The fluency scores were the most influential factor to the creativity index among the creativity subscale scores. Third, after completing the science gifted program, students showed significant difference in fluency scores, abstractness of titles scores, and resistance to premature closure scores; however, they showed no difference in originality scores and elaboration scores.
This study aims to compare self- and peer-assessments of science-gifted elementary students' scientific creativity. A science-gifted program on the Pascal's principle was implemented to 40 fifth-graders in the Science-Gifted Education Center for two weeks. After that, students presented their results from a scientific creativity task using the principle in class. The task was to devise a new and useful tool using the principle, and it included the students' self-assessment about their idea. During presentation, students were asked to assess the works of peers and write down the reasons that they gave the scores they gave. Shortly, student self- and peer-assessments about students' scientific creativity outcomes were compared. Based on two essential components of creativity, ideas that satisfy both originality and usefulness can be counted as scientifically creative. The main results of this study are as follows: First, the average scores of student self- and peer-assessments were 71.5 and 61.9. Second, the standard deviations of student self- and peer-assessments were 14.47 and 5.79. Third, among scientific creativity, originality, usefulness scores, only originality had a significant correlation between student self- and peer-assessment (r=.42). Fourth, the students were categorized into four groups according to the levels of their scores by student self- and peer-assessment. And the frequencies of peer-assessment group had a significant difference at p<0.05 level, according to self-assessment group (Chi Square=4.0000, df=1, p=0.0455). Fifth, through a case study by group, the results suggesting that self-assessment could be affected by the students' self-efficacy and perfectionism and such effect could also influence peer-assessment have been found. The result showed that how the student self- and peer-assessment of scientific creativity are different and what the students' thoughts on the evaluation of scientific creativity are. The findings suggested that there are several things to consider for the educators to make efforts to construct consistent assessment methods for scientific creativity.
