This paper is to investigate how two elementary school teacher's belief mathematics as educational content, and teaching and learning mathematics as a part of educational methodology, and what the two teachers believe towards gifted children and their education, and what the classes demonstrate and its effects on the sociomathematical norms. To investigate this matter, the study has been conducted with two teachers who have long years of experience in teaching gifted children, but fall into different belief categories. The results of the study show that teacher A falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'traditional', teaching mathematics as 'blended', and learning mathematics as 'traditional'. In addition, teacher A views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with low achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning assistant. On the other hand, teacher B falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'non-traditional', teaching mathematics as 'non-traditional, and learning mathematics as 'non-traditional.' Also, teacher B views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with high achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning guide. In the teacher A's class for gifted elementary school students, problem solving rule and the answers were considered as important factors and sociomathematical norms that valued difficult arithmetic operation were demonstrated However, in the teacher B's class for gifted elementary school students, sociomathematical norms that valued the process of problem solving, mathematical explanations and justification more than the answers were demonstrated. Based on the results, the implications regarding the education of mathematically gifted students were investigated.
This study analyzed the difficulties and mathematical modeling knowledge improvement that an elementary school teacher experienced in modifying a mathematics textbook task to a mathematical modeling task. To this end, an elementary school teacher with 10 years of experience participated in teacher-researcher community's repeated discussions and modified the average task in the data and pattern domain of the 5th grade. The results are as followings. First, in the process of task modification, the teacher had difficulties in reflecting reality, setting the appropriate cognitive level of mathematical modeling tasks, and presenting detailed tasks according to the mathematical modeling process. Second, through repeated task modifications, the teacher was able to develop realistic tasks considering the mathematical content knowledge and students' cognitive level, set the cognitive level of the task by adjusting the complexity and openness of the task, and present detailed tasks through thought experiments on students' task-solving process, which shows that teachers' mathematical modeling knowledge, including the concept of mathematical modeling and the characteristics of the mathematical modeling task, has improved. The findings of this study suggest that, in terms of the mathematical modeling teacher education, it is necessary to provide teachers with opportunities to improve their mathematical modeling task development competency through textbook task modification rather than direct provision of mathematical modeling tasks, experience mathematical modeling theory and practice together, and participate in teacher-researcher communities.
The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary teachers' science class objectively and quantitatively using Mobile Eye Tracker. The mobile eye tracker is easy to wear in eyeglasses form. And experiments are collected in video form, so it is very useful for realizing objective data of teacher's class situation in real time. Participants in the study were 2 elementary teachers, and they are teaching sixth grade science in Seoul. Participants took a 40-minute class wearing a mobile eye tracker. Eye movements of participants were collected at 60 Hz, and the collected eye movement data were analyzed using SMI BeGaze 3.7. In this study, the area related to the class was set as the area of interest, we analyzed the visual occupancy of teachers. In addition, we analyzed the linguistic interaction between teacher and students. The results of the study are as follows. First, we analyze the visual occupancy of meaningful areas in teaching-learning activities by class stage. Second, the analysis of eye movements when teachers interacted with students showed that teacher A had a high percentage of students' faces, while teacher B had a high visual occupation in areas not related to classes. Third, the linguistic interaction of the participants were analyzed. Analysis areas include questions, attention-focused language, elementary science teaching terminology, daily interaction, humor, and unnecessary words. This study shows that it is possible to analyze elementary science class objectively and quantitatively through analysis of visual occupancy using mobile eye tracking. In addition, it is expected that teachers' visual attention in teaching activities can be used as an index to analyze the form of language interaction.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how elementary teachers perceive and practice using Visual Thinking (VT) in science classes. For this, we collected 161 VT teaching materials for science that uploaded on the elementary teacher's online communities, and analyzed the characteristics. Also we interviewed four elementary teachers who have used VT in science class. The results are as follows. First, VT teaching materials shared in teacher's online communities were most often used to review the science concepts that students learned. Most of the materials required 'remember' among the Cognitive Process, and most of them provided layouts for VT activities. Second, the participants were using VT materials to review the science concepts they learned, so that students remember them. Third, the participants were satisfied because of the beliefs of effects as follows: facilitating learning and reviewing what students had learned; increasing students' positive reactions and confidence; learning through the interation among learners; the formation of habits thinking visually; indirect experiences of science class; possibility of class corresponding to learner characteristics. Fourth, the participants had difficulties in preparing for the VT science class, such as the burden of making VT materials, the long preparation time, concerns over overlapping contents, consideration of learners' VT skills, and the themselves' drawing ability. Furthermore, they also had difficulties in proceeding for the class, like different preference among learners about Visualization and loss of objectives in science class using VT. Fifth, the participants needed support as follows: platform to share students' VT results; VT case books and teachers' guidebooks; physical environment.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PCK designed instruction on academic achievement and self-efficacy for underachievers in science of elementary school. The hypotheses were as follows: First, PCK designed science instruction would improve academic achievement of the children. Second, PCK designed science instruction would improve academic self- efficacy of the children. The subject was 14 students of forth graders of elementary school who are underachievers in science class. For group composition, self efficacy test and science achievement test were conducted and they were divided into experimental group and control group. Each group has 7 participants. A total of 16 sessions were conducted for 8 weeks, twice per week, with experimental group were taught PCK designed classes while control group were taught teacher-led explanation type class. The result of statistical analyses were as follows: First, the experimental group in PCK designed class showed more improvement on academic achievement than the control group in the teacher-led explanation type class. Second, the experimental group in PCK designed class showed more improvement on self efficacy than the control group in the teacher-led explanation type class.
The purpose of this study was to explore strategies used by pre-service elementary science teachers in planning a science lesson. The participants were six senior students from a national university of education located in the midwestern area of Korea. Data regarding their planning strategies were gathered through both thinking-aloud and observation. Research findings suggest that: three of the teachers had little understanding of the necessity of reviewing unit contents or prior learning for planning a science lesson; five student teachers relied heavily on learning objectives presented in teachers' guidebooks without considering their appropriateness; all teachers exhibited an intention of composing different activities or teaching approaches from teachers' guidebooks; only two teachers thought about learners' prior knowledge or understanding levels; five and three teachers had poor understanding of discovery learning models and importance of teacher's questioning, respectively; and five teachers paid little attention to assessment.
We investigated the characteristics of lesson session and the professional development of teachers who conduct good teaching science subject. Seven teachers' were selected the finalists at the elementary school science and teaching competition. The study was based on a semi-structured questionnaire and interviews. To prove validity of the study, the collected data were verified by subject teachers for feedback. The results showed that the teachers believed that their lesson contents and methods were superior to other teachers. To enhance professional development in their lessons, they are only being made through help from colleagues and personal efforts, and a systematic development was involved with necessary situation. As a plan for enhancing an effective quality enhancement of lessons, open classes and conversation between colleagues were proposed. An organization or a group that can motivate teachers and provide systematic support for quality enhancement of lessons by teachers is needed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mathematical belief of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers and to analyze their differences in mathematical belief. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, Elementary school preservice teachers generally regard the belief in the nature of mathematics as 'rules and procedures' and emphasize the 'process of inquiry' about the beliefs of learning mathematics. When comparing the beliefs according to gender, there is a significant difference only in the category of 'teacher instruction' among the beliefs of learning mathematics. Second, elementary school teachers generally regard the nature of mathematics as a 'inquiry process' and have a 'student-led' belief about the learning mathematics. There is no significant difference of the belief about the nature of mathematics and learning mathematics between the elementary school teachers by gender and majors. However, when comparing the mathematical beliefs according to educational level, there is a difference in beliefs about the nature of mathematics. Third, comparing the mathematical beliefs of elementary school preservice teachers and elementary school teachers, there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the 'rules and procedures' subcategories of the nature of mathematics, but there is a significant difference in 'inquiry process'.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the validity of teacher evaluation policy for professional development and to suggest the ways to improve the policy in school. The teacher evaluation policy for professional development is designed to improve teacher professionalism and quality of school education. For this purpose, A survey was conducted and 361 elementary and middle school teachers participated in Busan. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 12.0. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, although teachers are highly interested in the teacher evaluation policy, they have negative attitudes for practicing the new policy. Second, assessors must be composed of reliable, competent experts because teacher evaluation has a great influence on teaching activities. The assessors should be composed of those who have the specialization and reliability on the basis. Also the assessors must be trained to enhance the fairness, objectivity and reliability by rigid discipline. Finally, teacher evaluation policy should be closely linked to increasing teacher's expertise such as training opportunities, teacher consultants, and senior teacher systems and should be widely utilized for the evaluation to be effective.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of higher grades in elementary the science process skill and scientific attitudes by creative problem solving. To verify research problem, the subject of this study were sixth-grade students selected from two classes of an elementary school located in Ulsan : the experimental group is composed of thirty-two students who were participated in Treffinger's CPS teaching model situation, and the other is composed of thirty-two students(control group) who were participated in teacher map based learning situation. During six weeks, the CPS teaming-based instruction was executed In th experimental group while the teacher map based instruction in controled group. Post-test showed following results: first, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in the science process skill compared th the control group. Second, the experimental group did not showed a significant improvement in the science process skill compared th the control group. In conclusion, Treffinger's CPS teaching model was more effective than the teacher map based teaching model on science process skill. However, since the study has a limit on an object of the study and the applied curriculum, the additional studies need to be conducted with an extended comparative group and curriculum.
