  • Due to the evolution of wireless communications technology, Long Term Evolution (LTE), which is a $4^{th}$ generation mobile communications system, has been adopted as a railway communications system. This LTE Railway (LTE-R) system is composed of various elemental functions, which are largely categorized into public safety and wireless communications for train control. Research on the public safety functions of railway communications have their roots in TRS based national public safety communication systems, and research on wireless communications functions for train control have their roots GSM-R, which is utilized by the ETCS in Europe. Based on these circumstances, this paper first analyzes the requirements for developing public safety technology in LTE-R, and compares those requirements with the functions of public safety LTE (PS-LTE), which is being deployed for the first time in the world by the South Korean government. Based on an analysis of the common and specific functions of LTE-R and PS-LTE, we conclude that there is little problem in integrating LTE-R and PS-LTE from the perspective of functionality. Second, this paper provides a comparison of the LTE-R requirements for the Quality of Service (QoS) with those of GSM-R utilized by the ETCS. This offers a guideline to allow LTE-R to be applied to a 500km/h train control system.

  • In this study, the torrefaction of food waste was conducted to characterize its product, to find out effect of the operating temperature and to assess the feasibility of being used as fuel. The operating temperature was varid from $180^{\circ}C{\sim}270^{\circ}C$ and heat was provided by using nitrogen gas or waste oil heat carrier. The solid yield and moisture content were reduced were reduced as temperature increased. The moisture content reduction and thermochemical conversion were observed at higher than $240^{\circ}C$. At low operating temperature, heat transfer efficiency was higher with wast oil heat carrier. As temperature increases, there was not difference in heat transfer efficiency of two different heating methods. The lower heating value product was increased from 660 to 6,400 Kcal/kg with nitrogen gas and 6,890 Kcal/kg with waste oil heat carrier. The elemental analysis indicates that, as temperature increases, the carbon content of product increases and oxygen content decreases. From the analysis of O/C and H/C, the torrefaction product was close to low grade coal. The characteristics of fuel converted from the food subsequent thermochemical treatment.

  • A chiral pentadentate ligand, 1,9-bis(S)-prolyl-1,9-dioxo-2,5,8-triaza-nonane, (S,S-prochen) which shows the stereospecific reaction was synthesized from the reaction of S-proline and diethylenetriamine (dien). The red-violet $[Co(SS-prodien)H_2O]ClO_4$ was prepared by the oxidation of the aqueous solution dissolving $CoCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and S,S-prodien. Elemental analysis, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy suggest that the geometrical structure of the Co(III) complex to be an ${\alpha}{\beta}$ (ffm) form, where the dien moiety of the ligand chelates the metal center to comprise a facial isomer, and an aqua ligand coordinates a cis site to the secondary nitrogens of the dien. Based upon the CD spectroscopic analysis, it seems that the absolute configuration of the ${\alpha}{\beta}$(ffm)-$[Co(SS-prodien)H_2O]ClO_4$ has the ${\Lambda}$-form.

  • Organic geochemical analyses including Rock-Eval pyrolysis, elemental analysis and stable carbon isotope analysis were performed to evaluate the characteristics of organic matter in the ODP Leg 127 Site 794A sediments and to understand paleoceanographic changes. Based on the TOC contents, C/N ratio, HI vs. OI, $\delta^{13}C_{org}$ and C/S ratio, results imply that dark layers containing a large amount of terrigenous organic matter were deposited under the suboxic/anoxic conditions, whereas the light layers containing largely marine organic matter were deposited under the oxic conditions. These results indicate that increasing surface-productivity by the input of a large amount of terrigenous organic matter from adjacent continent led to the deposition of dark layers during the interglacial highstands, whereas marine primary production and dilution caused by Kosa from the China desert area led to the deposition of light layers with the decreased to terrigenous organic matter during the glacial lowstands.

  • In this study, both mild acid and alkali treatments with 1.0 wt% and 2.0 wt% of $H_2SO_4$ and NaOH solution were applied to evaluate the effects on chemical compositions of wood biomass. Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) and larch (Larix kaempferi C.) were chosen due to major species planted in Korea. Chemical treatments of biomass were carried out by being soaked in either acid or alkali solution with 1:20 ratio for 72 hours at ambient temperature. Afterward, lignin, 5 major reduced sugars, ash contents and elemental composition were determined. To statistically understand the relationship between samples and chemical treatments, the Tukey test, simple linear regression model and ANOVA analysis were introduced using a statistical software R. As results from both wet chemistry and statistical analysis, yellow poplar was more affected on the lignin and xylose contents by acid treatments under these experimental conditions. Meanwhile, larch was more affected on the composition of galactose and lignin by alkali treatments. A series of results in this study would show that equivalent chemical treatment makes a change the chemical composition of each species.

  • A comparison of analytical approaches for Levoglucosan ($C_6H_{10}O_5$, commonly formed from the pyrolysis of carbohydrates such as cellulose) and used for a molecular marker in biomass burning is made between the four different analytical systems. 1) Spectrothermography technique as the evaluation of thermograms of carbon using Elemental Carbon & Organic Carbon Analyzer, 2) mass spectrometry technique using Gas Chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), 3) Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) for the identification of the particle size distribution and chemical composition, and 4) two dimensional Gas Chromatography with Time of Flight mass spectrometry (GC${\times}$GC-TOFMS) for defining the signature of Levoglucosan in terms of chemical analytical process. First, a Spectrothermography, which is defined as the graphical representation of the carbon, can be measured as a function of temperature during the thermal separation process and spectrothermographic analysis. GC/MS can detect mass fragment ions of Levoglucosan characterized by its base peak at m/z 60, 73 in mass fragment-grams by methylation and m/z 217, 204 by trimethylsilylderivatives (TMS-derivatives). AMS can be used to analyze the base peak at m/z 60.021, 73.029 in mass fragment-grams with a multiple-peak Gaussian curve fit algorithm. In the analysis of TMS derivatives by GC${\times}$GC-TOFMS, it can detect m/z 73 as the base ion for the identification of Levoglucosan. It can also observe m/z 217 and 204 with existence of m/z 333. Although the ratios of m/z 217 and m/z 204 to the base ion (m/z 73) in the mass spectrum of GC${\times}$GC-TOFMS lower than those of GC/MS, Levoglucosan can be separated and characterized from D (-) +Ribose in the mixture of sugar compounds. At last, the environmental significance of Levoglucosan will be discussed with respect to the health effect to offer important opportunities for clinical and potential epidemiological research for reducing incidence of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) samples were collected separately in mainstream and side-stream smoke using a self-designed smoking machine, and a total 40 of PM2.5 was collected with low volume air sampler at indoor environments with and without ETS in Daejeon, Korea. About 20 trace elements including toxic metals like As, Cr, Mn, Se, V, and Zn were determined in PM2.5 and ETS samples by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). It is found that the emission factors of K, Cl, Na, and Al were much higher than those of toxic elements for both mainstream and side-stream smoke. The average concentration of PM2.5 was enriched by 1.5 times at smoking area ($58.7{\pm}18.1{\mu}g/m^3$) than at smoking free area ($38.6{\pm}12.7{\mu}g/m^3$). The concentration ratio of each element between smoking and smoking free area were ranged from 1.1 to 6.0 except Cu (1.0); especially, Ce (6.0), La (5.2), K (2.3), and Co (2.0) showed higher ratio, which suggests that the ETS is one of the possible increasing factors of PM2.5 and elemental concentration at indoor environment.

  • Detection of halogens using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in open air is very difficult since their strong atomic emission lines are located in VUV region. In NIR region, there are other emission lines of halogens through electronic transitions between excited states. However, these lines undergo Stark broadening severely. We report the observation of the emission lines of halogens in laser-induced plasma (LIP) spectra in NIR region using a helium gas flow. Particularly, the emission lines of iodine at 804.374 and 905.833 nm from LIPs have been observed for the first time. In the helium ambient gas, Stark broadening of the emission lines and background continuum emission could be suppressed significantly. Variations of the line intensity, plasma temperature, and electron density with the helium flow rate was investigated. Detection of chlorine and bromine in flame retardant of rubbers was demonstrated using this method. Finally, we suggest a pulsed helium gas jet as a practical and ecomonical helium gas source for the LIBS analysis of halogens in open air.

  • To evaluate the possibly potent role of Asian Dust (AD) on the long range transport of Hg, statistical analyses were carried out using the hourly concentration data of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) along with relevant environmental parameters. For the purpose of this study, Hg data were collected from Yang-Jae monitoring station in Seoul, Korea during Sept. 1997 to June 2002. During the study period, Hg concentrations in non-AD period ranged from $0.03\;to\;32.70\;ng\;m^{-3}$ with a mean $5.27{\pm}3.06\;ng\;m^{-3}$, while those in AD period from $1.79\;to\;32.60\;ng\;m^{-3}$ with a mean $5.20{\pm}3.06\;ng\;m^{-3}$. The air quality during AD were typically deteriorated by enhanced PM10 mass concentration (by $2{\sim}5$ times) compared to non-AD period, however comparison of the Hg concentration data indicates that they are not critically distinguished between events of AD and non-AD, except for the high minimum level of Hg during AD. The results of correlation and factor analysis also indicated somewhat complex patterns; in the case of AD events, Hg and $SO_{2}$ were assorted concurrently into a same factor. Evidence collected from this study thus suggests that long-range transport of Hg, if occurring, is unlikely to raise statistically Hg concentration levels such as seen during AD event. However, in nighttime of winter season, Hg concentrations are higher during AD (along with PM10 levels) than non-AD period. Although such observations suggest the effect of long range transport on the enhancement of Hg concentrations, more deliberate analysis may be required to track down the effect of such mechanism in relation with various factors including the air mass transport route.
