  • Dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) having high efficiency with low cost was first reported by Gr$\ddot{a}$tzel et al. Many DSSC research groups attempt to enhance energy conversion efficiency by modifying the dye, electrolyte, Pt-coated electrode, and $TiO_2$ films. However, there are still some problems against realization of high-sensitivity DSSC such as the recombination of injected electrons in conduction band and the limited adsorption of dye on $TiO_2$ surface. The surface of $TiO_2$ is very important for improving hydrophilic property and dye adsorption on its surface. In this paper, we report a very efficient method to improve the efficiency and stability of DSSC with nano-structured $TiO_2$. Atmospheric plasma system was utilized for nitrogen plasma treatment on nano-structured $TiO_2$ film. We confirmed that the efficiency of DSSC was significantly dependent on plasma power. Relative in the $TiO_2$ surface change and characteristics after plasma was investigated by various analysis methods. The structure of $TiO_2$ films was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of $TiO_2$ films was observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The surface elemental composition was determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Each of plasma power differently affected conversion efficiency of DSSC with plasma-treated $TiO_2$ compared to untreated DSSC under AM 1.5 G spectral illumination of $100mWcm^{-2}$.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to assess a biochemical methane potential of giant miscanthus (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) which was a promising candidate energy crop due to a high biomass productivity, in order to utilize as a feedstock for the biogas production. METHODSANDRESULTS: Giant miscanthus was sampled the elapsing drying time of 6 months after harvesting. TS (Total Solid) and VS (Volatile Solid) contents were 94.7 and 90.8%. And CP (Crude Protein), EE (Ether Extracts), and CF (Crude Fiber) contents of giant miscanthus were 1.4, 0.46, and 46.12%, respectively. In the organic composition of giant miscanthus, the NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber) representing cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose contents showed 86.88%, and the ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber) representing cellulose and lignin contents was 62.91%. Elemental composition of giant miscanthus showed 47.75%, 6.44%, 41.00%, and 0.28% for C, H, O, and N, respectively, and then, theoretical methane potential was obtained to $0.502Nm^3kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$. Biochemical methane potential was assessed as the range of $0.154{\sim}0.241Nm^3kg^{-1}-VS_{added}$ resulting the lower organic biodegradability of 30.7~48.0%. CONCLUSION: Therefore the development of pretreatment technology of the giant miscanthus was needed for the improvement of anaerobic digestability.

  • Several transition metal complexes, [$M(L)X_2$](M=Pd(II), Ni(II); X=CI, Br) are prepared with aminophosphine ligands such as 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}ethane{$Ph_2PNHCH_2CH_2NHPPh_2$}($L_1$), 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}propane{$Ph_2PNHCH(CH_3)CH_2NHPPh_2$}($L_2$), trans-1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}cyclohexane{$Ph_2PNHC_6H_{10}NHPPh_2$}($L_3$) and 1,2-bis{(diphenylphosphino)amino}benzene{$Ph_2PNHC_6H_4NHPPh_2$}($L_4$). The properties of these complexes are characterized by optical spectroscopic methods including UV/vis spectroscopy, CD, IR, $^1H$- and $^{31}P-NMR$ together with conductometer and elemental analysis. All complexes are stable under atmospheric environment. Catalytic reactivity for C-C coupling between [$M(L)X_2$] and Grignard reagents(RMgX; R=phenyl, propyl, buthyl) by thermolysis were investigated utilizing GC/mass, $^1H$- and $^{13}C-NMR$. When mol scale is 1:20 at [$Pd(L)Cl_2$] and Grignard reagents, the high catalytic activity for C-C coupling is apparent. The [$M(L)X_2$](X=Cl, Br) complexes which have strong bond at M-P exhibit high yields for C-C coupling reactions. When the central metal ion is Pd(II), the high catalytic activity for C-C coupling is apparent. The complex coordinated with Br shows higher catalytic activity for C-C coupling reactions compared to Cl.

  • Characteristics of household wastes production from fishing village in small island was investigated. Investigation was conducted in August and December to represent seasonal characteristics of summer and winter, respectively. Amount of household wastes production was 0.65 kg/capita·day and this is relatively low value compared with nationwide average. Food wastes, papers, vinyl and plastics are major part of combustible portion in household wastes. Composting is inappropriate method as a final disposal method in terms of C/N ratio calculated from elemental analysis. It is recommended that incineration can be appropriate way as a final disposal method of household wastes because low heating value of household wastes is equivalent to that of crude oil. The fraction of food wastes in household is considerably higher than the values obtained from other residential areas in nationwide. Thus, it is evaluated that household composting devices and vermicomposting facilities are necessary to reduce the amount of food wastes. It also can be evaluated that incineration is optimal method as disposal method of household wastes from fishing village except food wastes.

  • DMA-co-DAMA were synthesized from 2-diethylaminoethyl metacrylate and dodecyl-metacrylate containing long chain hydrocarbon group with hydrophilic and hydrophobic radicals. To facilitate water emulsification, acrylic copolymer was cationized by acetic acid to produce acetated acrylic copolymer. The structures of the synthesized copolymer and acetated copolymers were confirmed by IR, NMR, and molecular weight was measured by GPC, and C. H. N elemental analysis. Acetated acrylic copolymers were perfectly emulsified in water and showed increased emulsion stability. Polymer dispersion for cement modifier(PDCM-PDD) was prepared by blending of the guaternized acrylic copolymer synthesized above sodium silicate sodium gluconate oleic acid and triethanol amine. The result with prepared polymer dispersion of cement modfier was examined, and it was found that excellent waterproffing effect; Water permeability ratio is 0.44 under the water pressure of $100g/cm^2$ and 0.55 under $3kg/cm^2$, and water absorption ratio is 0.36~0.47 and 1.02 compressive strength ratio at mixed ratio of water/PDCM-PDD is 45 times.

  • In order to achieve a hydrophobic surface of silica, we reacted silica nanoparticles with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) under various reaction conditions. Modification of the surface of silica with organic materials was confirmed by the thermogravity and elemental analysis. The modified silica displayed nearly the same morphology as to the pristine silica. The reaction of 20 g of HMDS with 1 g of silica in decalin at $200^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours was found to be the optimum reaction condition in terms of the dispersity in toluene and the surface roughness of composite films. Oxygen permeation studies of the composite film demonstrated that the modified silica enhanced a gas barrier performance.

  • This study was a qualitative investigation into hemodialysis patients' dietary practices. The purpose of this study was to explore the obstacles and requirements to maintain a recommended diet therapy in hemodialysis patients. Five patients undergoing hemodialysis in the renal chamber of the general hospital were interviewed individually. The interviews were based on an interview guide and analyzed by Giorgi's method of analysis. As a result of this study, five elemental factors and 12 subelemental factors were derived. Derived elements were "difficulty in dietary guidelines", "recognizing necessity of diet therapy", "awareness of importance of diet", "difficulty practicing diet therapy", and "looking for ways to practice diet therapy". Patients not only felt difficulties in practicing dietary guidelines but also recognized the need and importance of diet therapy. Patients seemed to have difficulty practicing meal therapy and eating with their families or others. They were also stressed by the limited selection of dietary components and rapid dietary changes before and after dialysis. However, patients showed a willingness to implement dietary management to improve their quality of life and to practice dietary therapy. In order to improve the practice of dietary management in hemodialysis patients, nutritional education should be focused on long-term dietary habits through continuous education and monitoring, not just one-off education. Moreover, patients should be educated that adherence to dietary control may be less burdensome on their families.

  • A new gas-chromatographic method for determining carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds has been developed. After sample combustion was performed in a regular analytical combustion tube with an internal oxidant (a mixture of silver oxide and manganese dioxide) under a helium flow, the water produced was converted to acetylene by passing through a calcium carbide tube. The carbon dioxide and acetylene were trapped by a molecular sieve 5A column at room temperature. The trapped gases were released under programmed temperature raise up to $340^{\circ}C$ and the released gases were passed through a silica gel column. The adsorption of $CO_2$ and $C_2H_2$ in the molecular sieve 5A trapping column were found to be quantitative and the silica gel column showed an excellent resolution of $CO_2$ and $C_2H_2$ for analytical purpose. The analytical results for various known compounds based on the out-put of the thermal conductivity cell calibrated for the amounts of carbon and hydrogen contents in benzoic acid, showed average errors ${\pm}0.5%$ and ${\pm}0.33%$ for carbon and hydrogen, respectively.

  • The reaction of N,N-diethyl carbamates of 1H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-1-ol (4-HOAt) 7, 3H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-3-ol (7-HOAt) 8, 1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-ol (HOBt) 9, 6-chloro-1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-ol (Cl-HOBt) 10, 6-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-ol ($CF_3$-HOBt) 11, and 6-nitro-1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-ol ($NO_2$-HOBt) 12 with morpholine and piperidine in $CH_3CN$ underwent acyl nucleophilic substitution to give the corresponding carboxamide derivatives. The reactants and products were identified by elemental analysis, IR and NMR. We measured the kinetics of these reactions spectrophotometrically in $CH_3CN$ at a range of temperatures. The rates of morpholinolysis and piperidinolysis were found to fit the Hammett equation and correlated with $\sigma$-Hammett values. The values were 1.44 - 1.21 for morpholinolysis and 1.95 - 1.72 for piperidinolysis depending on the temperature. The $Br{\phi}$nsted-type plot was linear with a $\beta_lg = -0.49 \pm 0.02$ and $-0.67 \pm 0.03$. The kinetic data and structure-reactivity relationships indicate that the reaction of 9-12 with amines proceeds by a concerted mechanism. The deviation from linearity of the correlation ${\Delta}H^#$ vs. ${\Delta}S^#$ and plot of $logk_{pip}$ vs. $logk_{morph}$ and $Br{\phi}$nsted-type correlation indicate that the reactions of amines with carbamates 7 and 8 is attributed to the electronic nature of their leaving groups.

  • A series of some biologically active halogenopurines were synthesized from commercially available guanine (1). The reaction of guanine with acetic anhydride yielded 2,9-diacetylguanine (2-1) by acetylation reaction. Further treatment of 2-1 with $POCl_3$ by PEG-2000 phase transfer catalysis furnished the important compound 3a, then 2-amino-6-halogenopurines (3b-d) were obtained through chlorine-exchange halogenations between KX and 3a by TPPB phase transfer catalyst. Further, 2-halogenopurines (2-2a-d, 4-2a-d, 5a-d) were efficiently prepared from 2-amino-6-substituted purines (1, 3a, 4-1) via a diazotization catalyzed by their corresponding CuX, and some new compounds 2-2a, 2-2c, 2-2d, 4-2c, 4-2d, 5b, 5c and 5d have been discovered. The structures of synthesized compounds were mainly established on the basis of their elemental analysis, $^1H$ NMR, as well as their mass spectral data. All the title compounds were screened for their antifungal activities, and some of the compounds showed promising activity.
