Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of single and combined applications of fluoride on the amount of fluoride release, and the remineralization and physical properties of enamel. Materials and Methods: Each of four fluoride varnish and gel products (Fluor Protector, FP, Ivoclar Vivadent; Tooth Mousse Plus, TM, GC; 60 Second Gel, A, Germiphene; CavityShield, CS, 3M ESPE) and two fluoride solutions (2% sodium fluoride, N; 8% tin(ii) fluoride, S) were applied on bovine teeth using single and combined methods (10 per group), and then the amount of fluoride release was measured for 4 wk. The electron probe microanalysis and the Vickers microhardness measurements were conducted to assess the effect of fluoride application on the surface properties of bovine teeth. Results: The amount of fluoride release was higher in combined applications than in single application (p < 0.05). Microhardness values were higher after combined applications of N with FP, TM, and CS than single application of them, and these values were also higher after combined applications of S than single application of A (p < 0.05). Ca and P values were higher in combined applications of N with TM and CS than single application of them (p < 0.05). They were also increased after combined applications of the S with A than after single application (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Combined applications of fluoride could be used as a basis to design more effective methods of fluoride application to provide enhanced remineralization.
The carbon concentration in the carburized steels was measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) for a range of soluted carbon content in austenite from 0.1 to 1.2 wt%. This study demonstrates the problems in carbon quantitative analysis using the existing calibration curve derived from pure iron (0.008 wt%C) and graphite (99.98 wt%C) as standard specimens. In order to derive an improved calibration curve, carbon homogenization treatment was performed to produce a uniform Kα intensity in selected standard samples (AISI 8620, AISI 4140, AISI 1065, AISI 52100 steel). The trend of detection intensity was identified according to the analysis condition, such as accelerating voltage (10, 15, 30 keV), and beam current (20, 50 nA). The appropriate analysis conditions (15 keV, 20 nA) were derived. When the carbon concentration depth profile of the carburized specimen was measured for a short carburizing time using the improved calibration curve, it proved to be a more reliable and accurate analysis method compared to the conventional analysis method.
Silicon nitride coating films with various ratios of nitrogen to silicon contents were prepared and characterized. The film was coated on silicon substrate by sputtering method with changing nitrogen gas flow rate in a chamber. The nitrogen to silicon ratio was found to have values in a range from 0 to 1.4. Coated film was characterized with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, nanoindentation scanning probe microscopy, x-ray photon spectrometry, and Raman spectrometry. Silicon nitride phase in all samples showed amorphous nature regardless of N/Si ratio. When N/Si ratio was 1.25, hardness and elastic modulus of silicon nitride film showed maximum with 22 GPa and 210 GPa, respectively. Those values decreased, when N/Si ratio was higher than 1.25. Raman spectrum showed that no silicon phase exist in the film. XPS result showed that the silicon-nitrogen bond was dominant way for atomic bonding in the film. The structure and property was explained with Random Bonding Model(RBM) which was consistent with the microstructure and chemistry analysis for the coating films.

In this Paper, ZnO films mixed with iron oxide were prepared by an ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method. The chemical composition and structural properties as a function of the Fe atomic ratio in the deposition solution were studied. Zinc acetate and ferrous chloride were used as precursors of Zn and Fe, respectively. Fe atomic ratio to Zn varied from 0.15 to 10.0. Substrate temperature was fixed at $250^{\circ}C$. The crystallographic properties and surface morphologies of the films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out to analyse the chemical composition and state of Zn and Fe atoms.

The TiB2-reinforced iron matrix nanocomposite (Fe-TiB2) was in-situ fabricated from titanium hydride (TiH2) and iron boride (FeB) powders by a simple and cost-effective process that combines the mechanical activation (MA) and a subsequent heat treatment (HT). Effect of milling factors and synthesized temperatures on the formation of the nanocomposite were presented and discussed. A differential thermal analyser (DSC-TG) was employed for examination of thermal behavior of MAed powders. Phases of the nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The morphologies and microstructure of nanocomposite were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Phase composition and distribution were analyzed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Results showed that TiB2 particles formed in nanoscale were uniformly distributed in alloyed Fe matrix.

Magnetron sputtered TiN, (Ti, Al)N and TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coatings grown on cemented carbide substrates have been characterized by using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), nanoindentation, scratcher and cutting tests. Results show that TiN coating is bell mouth columnar structures, (Ti, Al)N coating is straight columnar structures and the modulation structure has been formed in the TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating. TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating exhibited higher hardness, better adhesion with substrate and excellent cutting performance compared with TiN and (Ti, Al)N coating.
$YBa_2Cu_{3-x}Ni_xO_{7-{\delta}}$, with x = 0.05, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7 and 1.0 had been prepared by the thermal decomposition of corresponding nitrates. Among them, the sample with x = 0.05 shows above-liquid-$N_2$ temperature superconductivity with $T_c$ of 88.7K. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, its crystal symmetry was estimated as orthorhombic with the lattice parameters of a = 3.866${\AA}$, b = 3.893${\AA}$, c = 11.715${\AA}$. The chemical composition of the sample was determined by electron probe microanalysis and the chemical composition around its grain boundaries was carefully studied by the X-ray line scanning technique. From the observed binding energy of Ni-$2p_{3/2}$ orbital electron (B.E. = 853 eV) measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the valency state of nickel stabilized in $YBa_2Cu_{2.95}Ni_{0.05}O_{7-{\delta}}$ oxide lattice could be determined to be Ni(II).
To elucidate the effects of alloying elements on the characteristics of microstructure and high temperature oxidation of cast austenitic stainless steel, a thermodynamic calculation, a cyclic oxidation test, a X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscopy-back scattered electron, a electron probe microanalysis were conducted. The thermodynamic calculation for the effect of vanadium (V) addition on the formation of various precipitates leads to a decrease of chromium (Cr)-rich $M_{23}C_6$ carbides due to the formation of M (C, N) carbo-nitrides containing V and / or niobium (Nb). The V added alloy increased the resistance to high temperature oxidation due to a decrease of Cr-depleted zone deteriorating the oxidation resistance and due to the V-enriched oxide layer formed in inner oxide layer blocking the outward transport of cations.
Electron bombardment to silicate glass during electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) causes outward migration of Na from the excitation volume and subsequent decrease in the measured X-ray count rates of Na. To acquire precise Na2O content of silicate glass, one should use proper analytical technique to avoid or minimize Na migration effect or should correct for decreases in the measured Na X-ray counts. In this study, we analyzed 8 silicate glass standard samples using automated Time Dependent Intensity (TDI) correction method of Probe for EPMA software that can calculate zero-time intercept by extrapolating X-ray count changes over analysis time. We evaluated an accuracy of TDI correction for Na measurements of silicate glasses with EPMA at 15 kV acceleration voltage and 20 nA probe current electron beam, which is commonly utilized analytical condition for geological samples. Results show that Na loss can be avoided with 20 ㎛-sized large beam (<0.1 nA/㎛2), thus silicate glasses can be analyzed without TDI correction. When the beam size is smaller than 10 ㎛, Na loss results in large relative errors up to -55% of Na2O values without correction. By applying TDI corrections, we can acquire Na2O values close to the reference values with relative errors of ~ ±10%. Use of weighted linear-fit can reduce relative errors down to ±6%. Thus, quantitative analysis of silicate glasses with EPMA is required for TDI correction for alkali elements such as Na and K.
