  • This paper analyses the feasibility of using implantable antennas to detect and monitor tumors. We analyze this setting according to the wireless propagation loss and signal fading produced by human bodies and their environment in an indoor scenario. The study is based on the ITU-R propagation recommendations and prediction models for the planning of indoor radio communication systems and radio local area networks in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 100 GHz. We conduct primary estimations on 915 MHz and 2.4 GHz operating frequencies. The path loss presented in most short-range wireless implant devices does not take into account the human body as a channel itself, which causes additional losses to wireless designs. In this paper, we examine the propagation through the human body, including losses taken from bones, muscles, fat, and clothes, which results in a more accurate characterization and estimation of the channel. The results obtained from our simulation indicates a variation of the return loss of the spiral antenna when a tumor is located near the implant. This knowledge can be applied in medical detection, and monitoring of early tumors, by analyzing the electromagnetic field behavior of the implant. The tumor was modeled under CST Microwave Studio, using Wisconsin Diagnosis Breast Cancer Dataset. Features like the radius, texture, perimeter, area, and smoothness of the tumor are included along with their label data to determine whether the external shape has malignant or benign physiognomies. An explanation of the feasibility of the system deployment and technical recommendations to avoid interference is also described.

  • A new via cutting structure in 2-layer DRAM package substrate has been fabricated to lower its power distribution network(PDN) impedance. In new structure, part of the via is cut off vertically and its remaining part is designed to connect directly with the bonding pad on the package substrate. These via structure and substrate design not only provide high routing density but also improve the PDN impedance by shortening effectively the path from bonding pad to VSSQ plane. An additional process is not necessary to fabricate the via cutting structure because its structure is completed at the same time during a process of window area formation. Also, burr occurrence is minimized by filling the via-hole inside with a solder resist. 3-dimensional electromagnetic field simulation and S-parameter measurement are carried out in order to validate the effects of via cutting structure and VDDQ/VSSQ placement on the PDN impedance. New DRAM package substrate has a superior PDN impedance with a wide frequency range. This result shows that via cutting structure and power/ground placement are effective in reducing the PDN impedance.

  • The techniques using geophysical methods were adopted to obtain quantitative criteria for assessment of grouting effectiveness. Various surface and borehole geophysical surveys including seismic, GPR(ground penetrating radar), resistivity and electromagnetic methods were conducted in fractured rock pilot site before and after grouting execution. However, it is not enough that geophysical data provide criteria for field engineers to confirm the grouting effectiveness in that site even though there is somewhat difference before and after grouting. This study will be continued for the detailed criteria and assessment of grouting effectiveness in other sites.

  • In this paper, electro-magnetic numerical analysis of MFL(magnetic flux leakage) method is presented. For the electromagnetic numerical analysis, 2-D FEM(finite element method) is used. The magnetic vector potential is used as a variable. The analysis of the magnetic field considering the magnetic nonlinearity is performed for the effect of the magnetic salutation. For the verification of the validity of the numerical simulation results, by using the lab-made experimental setup, non-destructive inspection is performed. The SM 45C carbon steel is used as a specimen and the artificial defects are made on the specimen. The non-destructive testing for the detection of the defect is performed. The results according to the variation oi the defect depth and the defect shape are obtained. The experimental results are compared to the numerical ones, and we conclude that the numerical results are similar to the experimental ones. So the possibility of simulation of the MFL by using the numerical analysis is shown in this paper.

  • This study aims at the elucidation of the distribution of longshore currents after wave breaking. Longshore currents have relations to the beach process and dispersion of contaminants in the nearshore region, thus the understanding of its. mechanism is very important. In the present study, using the electromagnetic current meter, the water particle velocity is measured in the 3-dimensional wave field and Eulerian mean velocity is obtained. At the same time, from the dispersion of tracer, the Lagrangian mean velocity is also obtained. It is observed that the longshore currents were confined within the surf zone and the maximum value of them exists in the surf zone. The longshore currents were considered to be constant toward the depth and we obtained the similar distribution of longshore currents between the measured value and the theoretical ones by Longuet-Higgins model.

Abstract In cellular mobile communication systems, wave propagation models are used in most cases to predict cell coverage. The amount of propagation loss induced by the obstacles in the propagation path, however, is a highly non-linear function, which cannot be easily represented mathematically. In this paper, we introduce the method of producing propagation loss prediction models by function approximation using neural networks. In this method, we assume the propagation loss is a function of the relevant parameters such as the distance from the base station antenna, the specification of the transmitter antenna, obstacle profile, diffraction effect, road, and water effect. The values of these parameters are produced from the field measurement data, 3D digital terrain maps, and vector maps as its inputs by a feature extraction process, which takes into account the physical characteristics of electromagnetic waves such as reflection, diffraction and scattering. The values produced are used as the input to the neural network, which are then trained to become the propagation loss prediction model. In the experimental study, we obtain a considerable amount of improvement over COST-231 model in the prediction accuracy using this model.

  • This paper addresses EMC test results for the EQM Communications & Broadcasting Satellite(CBS) Ka-band Payload System. The aim of the EMC test is to verify that the payload system has no effect on the other system and is not affected by the external field. The compliance of EMC system requirements was verified by the analysis and measurement of the emission level from the payload system. The variation of performance by noise injection was measured to inspect the susceptibility of the payload system. The analysis and test results also showed that the electromagnetic interference has no serious effect on the overall payload system performance. It is confirmed that the EQM CBS Ka-band payload system can be operable in the space environment from the EMC performance's viewpoint. It is also obtained that better performance can be acquired by improving waveguide design and integration method.

  • Purpose: This paper analyzes the phenomenon on the degradation of the electrical performance by the pressure in the manufacturing process of sandwich type radomes. Methods: This paper consists of two steps to analyze the relation between the electrical performance and the pressure. First, the thickness of the core of the flat panels which were fabricated with different pressure was measured with the microscope, and then the electrical performance of the flat panels was analyzed with simulation and experiment. Based on the results of the electrical performance and the measured thickness with respect to the flat panels, the relation between the electrical performance and the applied pressure in the manufacturing process was analyzed. Results: The simulated and measured results with respect to the flat panel shows that the high pressure results in the nonuniform thickness of the core, which is applied to the radome fabrication. As a result, the degradation of the electrical performance occurs because the unintended scattered field is generated as the electromagnetic wave transmits (or impinges upon) the radome. Furthermore, we observed that the electrical performance of both the flat panel and the radome got worse as the high pressure was applied. Conclusion: Through simulation and experiment, therefore, it is demonstrated that for the high pressure in the manufacturing process the nonuniform thickness of the core increases and results in the degradation of the electrical performance of the radome.
