  • The theoretical equation for the relaxation spectrum of nonlinear viscoelastic polymeric material was derived from the Ree-Eyring and Maxwell non-Newtonian model. This model consists of infinite number of hyperbolic sine law Maxwell elements coupled in parallel plus a spring without a dashpot. Infinite number of nonlinear viscoelastic Maxwell elements can be used by specifying distribution of relaxation times, hole volumes, molecular weights, crystallite size and conformational size, etc. The experimentals of stress relaxation were carried out using the tensile tester with the solvent chamber. The relaxation spectra of nylon 6 filament fibers in various electrolytic solutions were obtained by applying the experimental stress relaxation curves to the theoretical equation of relaxation spectrum. The determination of relaxation spectra was performed from computer calculation.

  • The electrochemical conversion of $CO_2$ is one of the methods for reducing $CO_2$. Four materials (Ag, Ni, Pt, and Ir) were selected as the electrodes. The electrochemical conversion was performed under a cell voltage of 4.0 V at $600^{\circ}C$. The amounts of $CO_2$ reduction and carbon production were at the highest for Ag, followed by, Pt, Ni, and then Ir. The produced carbon samples were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis and XRD. The thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that all the carbon produced at each electrode exhibited similar thermal reactivity. The XRD results showed that the crystallization of carbon was different depending on the electrode utilized. Although electrochemical conversion was the highest for the Ag electrode, a loss of material accompanied it. Therefore, for this study, the optimal electrode is Pt, taking into account reactivity and material losses.

  • Processing and equipment were tailored for engineering scale fabrication of $UO_2$ porous pellets, a feed material for the electrolytic reduction process in the PRIDE (PyRoprocessing Integrated DEmonstration) facility at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). The starting materials, $UO_2$ powder and pre-milled surrogate oxide powders, were proportioned to simulate the chemical composition of spent fuel (so-called Simfuel). The Simfuel powders were homogenized by mixing, compacted into a pellet shape, and finally heat treated using a tumbling mixer, rotary press, and sintering furnace. After sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in $4%\;H_2-Ar$, the average bulk density of the $UO_2$ Simfuel pellets was $6.89g{\cdot}cm^{-3}$, which meets the standard of the following electrolytic reduction process. In addition, the results of a microstructural analysis demonstrated that the sintered Simfuel $UO_2$ porous pellets accurately simulate the properties of spent fuel in terms of the formation of second phases. These results provide essential information for the massive fabrication of $UO_2$ porous pellets for engineering scale pyroprocessing research.

  • Crystallographic phases of Plasma electrolytic oxidized Al alloy, A1100, A5052, A6061, A6063, A7075, were investigated. Two types of electrolyte $Na_2Si_2O_3$ and Na2P2O7 were also compared. Bipolar pulse, $2000{\mu}sec$ with $400{\mu}sec+420V$ impulse and $300{\mu}sec$ - impulse were applied for 20 min. ${\alpha}-alumina$, ${\gamma}-alumina$, ${\eta}-alumina$, $Al_{4.95}Si_{1.05}O_{9.52}$, and $(Al_{0.9}Cr_{0.1})_2O_3$ were mainly observed. Si, component of electrolyte, were moved into the PEO layer by bipolar pulse. Glassy phase was also observed at the surface of $Na_2Si_2O_3$ electrolyte treated PEO layer, and increased with the Mg content of Al alloy. It is concluded that at first glassy phase was formed by the micro plasma, and the high temperature of plasma turns glassy phase to several crystalline phases. And we could expect that many other crystalline phase could be formed by PEO process.

  • Crystallographic phases of Plasma electrolytic oxidized Al alloy, A1050, were investigated. The electrolyte of PEO was $Na_2Si_2O_3$ and KOH. Unipolar pulse, $ 2000{\mu}sec$ with $400{\mu}sec+420V$ impulse, were applied for 2 min, 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min. ${\gamma}-Alumina$, as well as ${\alpha}-alumina$, was main crystal phase. ${\gamma}-Alumina$ was appeared in the beginning, then the amount of ${\alpha}-alumina$ was increased with time, but the amount of ${\gamma}-Alumina$ remained constant without any increasing. So, it is concluded that plasma gas produce ${\gamma}-Alumina$ at the first, and then ${\gamma}-Alumina$ transform ${\alpha}-alumina$ finally. During the transformation, high temperature of micro plasma gives transformation energy.

  • Single crystal sapphire being used in high technology industry is a brittle material with a high hardness and excellent physical properties. ELID(Electrolytic In-Process Dressing) grinding technology was applied to material removal machining process of single crystal sapphire wafer. Ultrasonic vibration which added to material using ultrasonic table was adopted to efficient ELID grinding of sapphire materials. The evaluation of the ground surface of single crystal sapphire wafer was carried out by means of surface measuring by using AFM(Atomic Force Microscope), surface roughness tester and optical microscope device. As the results of experiment, it was shown that more efficient grinding was conducted when using ultrasonic table. In case of using #170 grinding wheel, surface roughness of ELID ground specimen in using ultrasonic table was superior to ELID ground specimen without ultrasonic table. However, In case of using #2000 grinding wheel, surface roughness of ELID ground specimen in using ultrasonic table was inferior to ELID ground specimen without ultrasonic table.

  • Although Titanium material has superior properties, it belongs to difficult-to-machine materials. The present research applies magnetic abrasive finishing to precision machining of internal-face of titanium pipes, and analyzed & assessed the influence of grinding conditions on magnetic abrasive effects through the removed amount and surface roughness of materials. There was the influence on grinding properties according to change of rotational speed, a total input of mixed powder and an input of grinding liquid, and when the total input, rotational speed and ratio of electrolytic iron versus magnetic abrasives are 8g and 1000rpm, it was most advantageous in aspects of surface roughness and material removal amount, and the grinding liquid remarkably improved the surface roughness and material removal amount only with addition of trace amounts of light oil rather than dry machining conditions. And a result of considering the influence on grinding properties by using an inert gas (Argon gas) for improving grinding properties of the internal-face of titanium pipe, the present research has obtained improvement effects in the removal amount and surface roughness through utilization of an inert gas.

  • In this study, electrolytic copper powders were consolidated by high-pressure torsion process (HPT) which is the most effective process to produce bulk ultrafine grained and nanocrystalline metallic materials among various severe plastic deformation processes. The bulk samples were manufactured by the HPT process at 2.5 GPa and 1/2, 1 and 10 turns. After 10 turns, full densification was achieved by high pressure with shear deformation and ultrafine grained structure (average grain size of 677 nm) was observed by electron backscatter diffraction and a scanning transmission electron microscope.

  • Silicon-based thin film was prepared at room temperature by an electrochemical deposition method and a feasibility study was conducted for its use as an anode material in a rechargeable lithium battery. The growth of the electrodeposits was mainly concentrated on the surface defects of the Cu substrate while that growth was trivial on the defect-free surface region. Intentional formation of random defects on the substrate by chemical etching led to uniform formation of deposits throughout the surface. The morphology of the electrodeposits reflected first the roughened surface of the substrate, but it became flattened as the deposition time increased, due primarily to the concentration of reduction current on the convex region of the deposits. The electrodeposits proved to be amorphous and to contain chlorine and carbon, together with silicon, indicating that the electrolyte is captured in the deposits during the fabrication process. The silicon in the deposits readily reacted with lithium, but thick deposits resulted in significant reaction overvoltage. The charge efficiency of oxidation (lithiation) to reduction (delithiation) was higher in the relatively thick deposit. This abnormal behavior needs to clarified in view of the thickness dependence of the internal residual stress and the relaxation tendency of the reaction-induced stress due to the porous structure of the deposits and the deposit components other than silicon.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing pyroprocessing technology for recycling useful resources from spent fuel since 1997. The process includes pretreatment, electroreduction, electrorefining, electrowinning, and a waste salt treatment system. This paper briefly addresses unit processes and related innovative technologies. As for the electroreduction step, a stainless steel mesh basket was applied for adaption of granules of uranium oxide. This basket was designed for ready handling and transfer of feed material. A graphite cathode was used for the continuous collection of uranium dendrite in the electrorefining system. This enhances the throughput of the electrorefiner. A particular mesh type stirrer was designed to inhibit uranium spill-over at the liquid Cd crucible. A residual actinide recovery system was also tested to recover TRU tracer. In order to reduce the waste volume, a crystallization method is employed for Cs and Sr removal. Experiments on the unit processes were tested successfully, and based on the results, engineering-scale equipment has been designed for the PRIDE (PyRoprocess Integrated inactive DEmonstration facility).
