  • The properties of cement mortar mixed with manganese-doped titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO2(Mn)-NWs) were investigated in this study. The TiO2(Mn)-NWs were synthesized using solvo-thermal synthesis and electro-spinning techniques. The TiO2(Mn)-NWs at weights of 1%, 2%, and 3% of the cement were respectively mixed into the cement mortar. The results showed that as the amount of TiO2(Mn)-NWs increased, the flow value of the cement mortar was decreased and the setting time of cement mortar was accelerated. Moreover, as the amount of TiO2(Mn)-NWs increased, the compressive strength of cement mortar was increased and the efficiency of acetaldehyde removal was improved.

  • The adsorption characteristics of L-tryptophan of PES-BSA affinity membranes prepared by using electro-spinning were investigated. It was found that the fiber diameters could be controlled by the comparisons of fiber diameters prepared by various spinning conditions through FESEM and Image Analyzer. Darcy's permeability constants, mechanical properties and hydrophobic properties were enhanced since micro-fibers increased by increasing the composition ratio of HFB and BSA. The elution capacity of L-tryptophan in borate-DMSO buffer solution was higher than that in tris-HCl buffer solution, while the elution capacity of A 7906 type BSA was higher than A 8022 type BSA. This is due to the characteristics of BSA type, i. e. higher purity and uniform molecular weight and better pH stability of A 7906 type BSA than those of A 8022 type BSA.

  • In this study, a pitch for melt-electrospinning was prepared from naphtha cracking bottom (NCB) oil by the modification with heat treatment. The softening point and property of the modified pitch was influenced by modification conditions such as nitrogen flow rate, heat treatment temperature, and reaction time. Among these, the heat treatment temperature had a very strong influence on the distribution of molecular weight and softening point of the pitch. The C/H mole ratio and average molecular weight increased with increasing the heat treatment temperature due the decomposition and cyclization reaction of surface-functional groups. In addition, the values of benzene insoluble and quinoline insoluble also tends to decrease, and the width of molecular weight distribution seems to get more narrow. The carbon fiber with a diameter of $4.8{\mu}m$ was prepared from a modified pitch at the softening point of $155^{\circ}C$ by melt-electrospinning. It is believed that the melt-electro spinning method is much more convenient to get the thinner fiber than the conventional melt spinning method.

  • The fabrication of gelatin nanofibers by electro spinning has been examined using the TFE/DW co-solvent system. It has been found that no beads-on-string structure was formed for the solution containing ionic salts. The resulting fibers exhibited a uniform diameter ranging from 110 to 125 nm. As the concentration of ionic salts increases, the beads become smaller and more spindle like, due to the increase of viscosity and conductivity. The addition of ionic salts induces a higher charge density on the surface of ejected jet during spinning, leading that higher elongation forces are applied to the jet. The higher enhancement of viscosity and conductivity was observed in gelatin solutions by the use of divalent salt. However, the concentration of ionic salts scarcely affected the variation of fiber diameter. While very low crystallinity was observed from XRD pattern for the sample containing no ionic salt, which increased with increasing the concentration of ionic salts.

  • Fibrous chitosan membranes were fabricated as a substrate for skin applications using an electro-spinning process with different solvents and varying concentrations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirmed that the formation of the chitosan fibrous membrane in trifluoroacetic acid was better than that in acetic acid. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the chitosan fibers were cross-linked with glutaraldehyde, and that the cytotoxicity of the aldehyde groups was reduced by glycine and washing by NaOH and DI water. Chitosan cross-linked fibrous membranes were insoluble in water and could be washed thoroughly to wash away glycine and excess NaOH and prevent the infiltration of other water soluble bio-toxic agents using DI water. MTT assay method was employed to test the cytotoxicity of chitosan membranes during fabricating, treating and washing processes. After the dehydration of cell cultured chitosan membranes, cell attachment behavior on the material was evaluated using SEM method. Effect of the treatment processes on the biocompatibility of the chitosan membranes was shown by comparing of filopodium and lamellipodium of fibroblast cells on grown washed and unwashed chitosan fibrous membrane. The MTT assay and SEM morphology confirmed that the washed chitosan fibrous membrane increased cell attachment and cell growth, and decreased toxicity compared to results for the unwashed chitosan fibrous membrane.

  • In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA) was electro-spun to fabricate nanofibrous membranes for support materials. Because HA is very hygroscopic, it is difficult to obtain enough viscosity to apply electrospinning method. Therefore, we mixed HA with polyethylene oxide (PEO) to obtain proper viscosity and added adipic acid (ADH) to promote cross-linking of PEO/HA during electrospinning. The morphology of PEO/HA membrane was optimized according to PEO/HA concentration ratio and spinning rate. Finally, we fabricated gold-nanoparticle-embedded PEO/HA membranes and their catalyst activities were evaluated in tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation.

  • Research and development of nano fiber products is very active over the world. Physical characteristics and dyeing properties of nylon 66 nano fiber were investigated in this study. X-ray diffraction, DSC, analysis of amino end group, and water absorption were performed to get information concerning physical properties of nano fiber. Nylon 66 nano fiber was dyed with high molecular mass acid dyes. Effects of dyeing temperature, pH of dyeing solution, and concentration of acid dyes on dyeing properties such as rate of dyeing and the extent of exhaustion, were examined and compared to those of regular fiber. It was found that nano fiber adsorbed acid dyes at lower temperature, got rapidly dyed, and its extents of exhaustion at specific dyeing temperature were higher than regular fiber. It was also observed that nano fiber could adsorb a large amount of acid dye without a significant loss in the extent of exhaustion. Washing fastness of the dyed nano fiber was lower by $1/2\~1$ grade, light fastness by 1 grade than the dyed regular fiber.

  • This paper investigated the effect of biodegradation behavior on the oxidation of cellulose nanofiber mats. The cellulose mats were produced through electro spinning. The diameter of an electrospun fiber varied from 90 to 240 nm depending on the electrospinning parameters, such as the solution concentration, needle diameter, and rotation speed of a grounded collector. Oxidized cellulose (OC).mats containing different carboxyl contents were prepared using $NO_2$ as an oxidant. The total carboxyl content of the cellulose nanofiber mats obtained after oxidation for 20 h was $20.6\%$. The corresponding carboxyl content was important from a commercial point of view because OC containing $16-24\%$ carboxyl content are used widely in the medical field as a form of powder or knitted fabric. Degradation tests of the OC mats were performed at $37^{\circ}C$ in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4). Microscopy techniques were introduced to study the morphological properties and the degradation behavior of the OC mats. Morphological changes of the mats were visualized using optical microscopy. Within 4 days of exposure to PBS, the weight loss of the OC mats was $>90\%$.

  • Ceramic materials have attracted increasing attention in the last 10 years because of their high thermal stability and high permeation property compared with polymeric nanofiber membranes. Recently, novel nanofiber ceramic membranes with high porosity and flux have been fabricated from metal oxide nanofibers. To improve the performance of ceramic membranes and reduce their costs, a new ceramic membrane with a selective separation layer made of nanofibers was fabricated by electrospinning process and modification process for filtration system. This review summarizes the research trends for the development of ceramic nanofiber membrane over the past few years.

  • A procedure for the surface hydrolysis of an electrospun poly(${\epsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) fibrous scaffold was developed to enhance the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts. The surface hydrolysis of fibrous scaffolds was performed using NaOH treatment for the formation of carboxyl groups on the fiber surfaces. The hydrolysis process did not induce deformation of the fibers, and the fibers retained their diameter. The cell seeding density on the NaOH-treated PCL fibrous scaffolds was more pronounced than on the non-treated PCL fibers used as a control. The alkaline phosphatase activity, osteocalcin and a mineralization assay strongly supported that the surface-hydrolyzed PCL fibrous scaffolds provided more favorable environments for the proliferation and functions of osteoblasts compared to the non-treated PCL fibrous scaffolds use as a control.
