  • In this study, electrokinetic remediation equipment was used to remove cesium (Cs) from clay soil and waste solution was treated with sorption process. The influence of electrokinetic process on the removal of Cs was evaluated under the condition of applied electric voltage of 15.0-20.0 V. In addition to monitoring the Cs removal, electrical current and temperature of the electrolyte during experiment were investigated. The removal efficiency of Cs from soil by electrokinetic method was more than 90%. After electrokinetic remediation, Cs was selectively separated from soil waste solution using sorbents. Various adsorption agents such as potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNiHCF), Prussian blue, sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB), and zeolite were compared and KNiHCF showed the highest Cs removal efficiency. The Cs adsorption on KNiHCF reached equilibrium in 30 min. The maximum adsorption capacity was 120.4 mg/g at 0.1 g/L of adsorbent dosage. These results demonstrated that our proposed process combined electrokinetic remediation of soil and waste solution treatment with metal ferrocyanide can be a promising technique to decontaminate Cs-contaminated fine soil.

  • Both $Al_2O_3$ and AlN nanopowders with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm were bead-milled and surface-modified by stabilizing agent. The size of bead-milled nanoparticles compared with the primary powder was effectively decreased and was dependent on milling time and bead size. The results of dispersion stability analysis indicated that chemical bonding between nanoparticles and surfactant is more effective than chemical adsorption to prepare the stable transformer oils containing nanoparticles. In this study, the thermal conductivity of the transformer oils containing nanoparticles was measured by transient hot-wire and laser flash methods.

  • In the light of the properties of colloids, in the surface of disperse phase and dispersion, there exist specific characters such as adsorption or electric double layer, which seems to play important roles in determining the physiochemical properties in the dyeing system. Nylon, wool and silk, the typical amphoteric fibers were dyed with Acid dye and various combinations were prepared by combining pH, temperature and dye concentration, in order to generate flowing electric potential which were measured by microviolt meter and specific conductivity meter. The results were transformed to Zeta potential by Helmholtz-Smoluchowski formular and to surface electric charge density by Suzawa formular, surface dye amount, and effective surface area of fibers, and these data were statistically analysed by principle component analysis.

  • In the electrode fabrication of unit cell, it was ascertained that electrochemical characteristics were greatly increased with 90 wt.% of BP-20, 5 wt.% of Super P and 5 wt.% of mixed binder [P(VdF-co-HFP) : PVP =7 : 3] The self-discharge of unit cell showed that diffusion process was controlled by the ion concentration difference of initial electrolyte due to the characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) charged by ion adsorption in the beginning, but this by current leakage through the double-layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface had a minor effect and voltages of curves were remained constant regardless of electrode material. The electrochemical characteristics of 2.3 V/3,000 F grade EDLC were as follows: 0.35 m of DC-ESR (100 A discharge), 0.14 mof AC-ESR (AC amplitude 100 mV), 2.80 Wh/kg (3.73 Wh/L) of energy density and 4.64 kW /kg (6.19 kW/L) of power density. Power output was compatible with electric vehicle applications, uninterrupted power supply and engine starter, in due consideration of Ragone relations.

  • The heat transfer performance improvement in closed cooling water system of an electric power generation can be achieved by a corrosion control using corrosion inhibitors. The effect of trisodium phosphate and sodium nitrite upon carbon steel at various $Cl^{-1}$ ion containing water concentrations was examined by an integrated corrosion monitoring system. Nitrite was found to be the most effective inhibitor among tested inhibitors for carbon steel. The inhibiting process is considered as adsorption of nitrite ions in oxide layer which form a passive film on the carbon steel surface.

  • Recently each domestic NPP has achieved zero release in liquid effluent activity. However, when looking back past experiences in world nuclear power operation, it is thought that another maximum activity reduction in the released liquid effluent just prior to falling it into environment, if possible, will bring a good effect in PA viewpoint. As the intent of applying the safety concept of diversity to conducting the above activity reduction measure, a scheme passing that effluent through the Deposition Bed just before discharging it into ocean environment was divised. Both Zeolite and "the mixed "Anthracite-sand" were derived as the main activity adsorption medium used in the Deposition Bed, and the schematic drawings of this Bed were presented.

  • A stable desalination method of the hardness substance such as $Ca^{2+}$ by controlling the total charge (TC) supplied to the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell was studied. The adsorption (1.5 V) and desorption (0.0 V) were repeated 30 times while varying the TC in the adsorption process. The concentration and pH of effluent, adsorption and desorption amounts, current densities and cell potentials were analyzed in the desalination process. The maximum allowable charge (MAC) of the carbon electrode used in MCDI cell was measured to be 46 C/g. As a result of operation at TC (40 C/g) below the MAC value, electrode reactions did not occur, resulted in the stable desalination characteristics for a long-term operation. When operating at TCs (50, 60 C/g) above the MAC value, however, the concentration and pH of effluent varied greatly. Also, the scale was formed on the electrode surface due to electrode reactions, and the electric resistance of the cell gradually increased. It was thus concluded that it is possible to remove stably the hardness substance without any electrode reactions by controlling the charge supplied to MCDI cell during the adsorption process.

  • The efficiency of the adsorption of adsorbents depends on both pore size and shape. In other to adsorb hydrated ion in application of electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), mesopore is necessary[1,2]. Tamai et al.[3] reported that an increased portion of mesopore was introduced through addition of metal or organometallic compound in the precursor and following activation of the carbon fibers with steam. • In this work, the activated carbons (ACs) with high porosity were synthesized from pitch by KOH chemical activation. The structure and surface properties of ACs were characterized by means of elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). And, the influence of the KOH-to-pitch ratio on the porosity of the ACs was investigated using the nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, pitch could be successfully converted into ACs with well-developed micro and mesopores. The specific surface areas and pore volumes were increased with an increase of the KOH-to-pitch ratio. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of KOH led to the transformation of the micropores to the meso- and macropores. In the application to electric double layer capacitors (EDLC), the pitch-based ACs showed a higher capacitance per weight and per volume, and an excellent electrochemical stability in the high voltage region.

  • To remove total dissolved solid (TDS) from wastewater, a carbon membrane system was prepared, using carbon membranes made from conductive activated carbon and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Using 100 ppm aqueous solutions of NaCl, $Na_2SO_4,\;MgCl_2,\;MgSO_4$, the basic properties of the carbon membranes used were studied. For the treatment of the real dye wastewater supplied from Kyungin Corp., a pilot scale carbon membrane system was also prepared, which was consisted of 240 plies of carbon membranes of $20cm{\times}20cm$ (length${\times}$width). Using the real wastewater with different TDS such as 941, 2050, 2810, 3830, 4960, 6030 ppm, prepared by the dilution of the original wastewater with pure water, the performance of the pilot scale carbon membrane system was studied. The effect of the operational conditions was studied.
