  • We give a mathematical approach using Linear Algebra, especially largest eigenvalue and eigenvector on decision making support system. We find a mathematical modeling on decision making problem which could be solved by AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. Especially, we give a new approach to change evaluation indicator weight on assessing research proposals.

  • In the vibration analysis of Timoshenko beams by the finite element method, it is necessary to use a large number of elements or higher-order elements in modeling thin beams. This is because the overestimated stiffness matrix due to the shear locking phenomenon when lower-order displacement-based elements are used yields poor eigensolutions. As a result, the total number of degrees of freedom becomes critical in view of computational efficiency. In this paper, the curvature-based formulation is applied to the vibration problem. It is shown that the curvaturebased beam elements are free of shear locking and very efficient in the vibration analysis.

  • Matched field processing technique is performed by considering complex underwater environments. Specially, tile performance of minimum variance processor is greatly degraded by eigenvalue problem. In this paper, we .propose the minimum valiance matched field processor using shaping matrix. This shaping matrix makes that the input covariance matrix is invertible and enhances the desired acoustic source component. It was proved effectively range/depth localization of the proposed method with vertical array data collected by NATO SACLANT Center north of the island of Elba off the Italian west coast.

  • This paper presents an active noise control (ANC) algorithm using orthogonalization property of Walsh transform. Conventional ANC algorithm known as filtered-x LMS(FXL) algorithm has a problem of decreasing convergence speed in FIR adaptive filters operating in colored noise environments. Walsh transform decompose an input signal into a set of N uncorrelated components and reduce eigenvalue spread of autocorrelation matrix of input sequences. Computer simulations show that proposed (FXW) algorithm is superier to FXL in convergence speed.

  • Isomap [1] is a manifold learning algorithm, which extends classical multidimensional scaling (MDS) by considering approximate geodesic distance instead of Euclidean distance. The approximate geodesic distance matrix can be interpreted as a kernel matrix, which implies that Isomap can be solved by a kernel eigenvalue problem. However, the geodesic distance kernel matrix is not guaranteed to be positive semidefinite. In this paper we employ a constant-adding method, which leads to the Mercer kernel-based Isomap algorithm. Numerical experimental results with noisy 'Swiss roll' data, confirm the validity and high performance of our kernel Isomap algorithm.

  • This paper proposes the adoption of Monte Carlo perturbation theory to approximate the Jacobian matrix of coupled neutronics/thermal-hydraulics problems. The projected Jacobian is obtained from the eigenvalue decomposition of the fission matrix, and it is adopted to solve the coupled problem via the Newton method. This avoids numerical differentiations commonly adopted in Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov methods that tend to become expensive and inaccurate in the presence of Monte Carlo statistical errors in the residual. The proposed approach is presented and preliminarily demonstrated for a simple two-dimensional pressurized water reactor case study.

  • This paper contains various vibration analysis of multi-stage shaft shape such as the bending, torsional and axial vibration. The shaft system is modeled as Timoshenko beam with the transverse shear and rotary inertia effect and the equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle with considering clamped-free boundary condition. Then, eigenvalue problem of discrete equation of motion for multi-stage shaft model is solved and got results of the natural frequency through the numerical analysis. Obtained numerical analysis results through Matlab program were compared with those of FEM analysis to verify the results. This study suggests that design of shaft system be consider torsional and axial vibration as well as bending vibration.

  • This paper discussed on the stability of elastic material subjected to dry friction force for low boundary conditions: clamped free, clamped-simply supported, simply supported-simply supported, clamped-clamped. It is assumed in this paper that the dry frictional force between a tool stand and an elastic material can be modeled as a distributed follower force. The friction material is modeled for simplicity into a Winkler-type elastic foundation. The stability of beams on the elastic foundation subjected to distribute follower force is formulated by using finite element method to have a standard eigenvalue problem. It is found that the clamped-free beam loses its stability in the flutter type instability, the simply supported-simply supported beam loses its stability in the divergence type instability and the other two boundary conditions the beams lose their stability in the divergence-flutter type instability.

  • In this study, we establish a theory for dynamic behaviors of an automatic ball balancer, analyze its dynamic characteristics, and provide its design guide line. Equations of motion are derived by using the polar coordinate system instead of the rectangular coordinate system which was previously used in other researches. After nondimensionalization of the equations, the perturbation method is applied to locate the equilibrium positions and to obtain the linearized equations of motion around the equilibrium positions. The Eigenvalue problem is used to verify the dynamic stability around the equilibrium positions. On the other hand, the time responses are computed from the nonlinear equations of motion by using a time integration method.

  • Axisymmetric finite element model is developed to determine sound propagation characteristics in a circular duct lined with a poroelastic foam. The foam and air models are derived based on the Biot's theory and the Helmholtz equation respectively and finally result in a quadratic eigenvalue problem in the wave number. Some cross sectional mode shapes are shown and sound attenuations and phase speeds of some acoustic modes are given. Those of fundamental modes are compared with those by forced response solutions and those from measurement results. The influence of lining thickness is also described on sound propagation characteristics.
