In the construction of earth dam, embankment and highway by filling, a compaction contributes to increasing the density of soil by applying pressure. The effect of compaction depends on various factors such as soil type, moisture content, gradation, consistency, and compaction energy. In this study, the correlations amone maximum dry density, moisture content, dry density, and moisture content are analyzed. Some results obtained in this study are summarizep as follows. 1. The maximum dry density sinoreases with increased of optimum moisture content and the correlations of them can be represented by; ${\gamma}$dmx=a-b(W0) 2. Maximum dry density and liquid limit show negative linear correlation and can be represented by; ${\gamma}$dmx=a-b(LL). 3. Optimum moisture content and liquid limit, plastic limit show positive linear correlation and can be represented by the following equation, W0=a+b(LL) W0=a+b(PL). 4. Liquid limit and plastic limit show positive linear correlation, and can be represented by the following equation, LL=a+b(PL).

To determine the effect of draining for the drainage layer in CFGD(Concrete Faced Gravel Dam) body, centrifuge model tests were performed. Also, soil compaction works are essential to construction of dams in order to avoid unexpected settlement of superstructures. Taking advantage of oscillating accelerometer, this research was made to complement existing methods for assessment of soil stiffness. In order to examine the validity of compaction-degree suggested in the study, tests on vibration characteristics using accelerometers was also performed.
Nano Cu powders, synthesized by Pulsed Wire Evaporation (PWE) method, have been compacted by Magnetic Pulsed Cojpaction(MPC) method. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed. The optimal condition for proper mechanical properties with nanostructure was found. Both pure nano Cu powders and passivated nano Cu powders were compacted, and the effect of passivated layer on the mechanical properties was investigated. The compacts by MPC, which had ultra-fine and uniform nanostructure, showed higher density of 95% of theoretical density than that of static compaction. The pur and passivated Cu compacted at $300^{\circ}C$ exhibited maximum hardnesses of 248 and 260 Hv, respectively. The wear resistance of those compacts corresponded to the hardness.
Among soft ground improvement methods by using granular material, the sand compaction pile method has been widely utilized in Korea, but, as a result of shortage and increase of unit price of sand, a necessity of an alternative method has been required. In this study, a series of in-situ static load tests for crushed-stone compaction piles were performed. Pile diameter was fixed to 700mm and areas of loading plates were changed. The static load tests were performed for area replacement ratios of 20, 30 and 40% respectively. Based on the test results, bearing capacity of single crushed-stone compaction pile was estimated. It showed that the settlement decreases as the replacement ratio increases. Also, a yielding capacity equation of the crushed-stone compaction pile considering replacement ratio was suggested.
The compaction equipment and the Marshall stability head are the two important testing equipment for the Marshall test. The compaction equipment is closely related to the air void, VMA and compactability of the mixtures, and the stability head is related to the Marshall stability and the flow, therefore the size and the shape of the equipment is essential for finding the accurate optimum asphalt content for the asphalt mix design. However, the size and the shape of the equipment currently used and the condition of the installation of compaction pedestal in this country are different from each agency and manufacturer. The national inspection of the Marshall equipment is necessary because the difference can affect the test results and also the performance of the asphalt pavement.
In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.
The deformation and strength of brittle rocks are significantly influenced by the crack closure behavior. The relationship between the strength and deformation of rocks under uniaxial loading is the foundation for design and assessment of such scenarios. The concept of relative crack closure strain was proposed to describe the influence of the crack closure behavior on the deformation and strength of rocks. Considering the crack compaction effect, a new damage constitutive model was developed based on accumulated AE counts. First, a damage variable based on the accumulated AE counts was introduced, and the damage evolution equations for the four types of brittle rocks were then derived. Second, a compaction coefficient was proposed to describe the compaction degree and a correction factor was proposed to correct the error in the effective elastic modulus instead of the elastic modulus of the rock without new damage. Finally, the compaction coefficient and correction factor were used to modify the damage constitutive model obtained using the Lemaitre strain equivalence hypothesis. The fitted results of the models were then compared with the experimental data. The results showed that the uniaxial compressive strength and effective elastic modulus decrease with an increase in the relative crack closure strain. The values of the damage variables increase exponentially with strains. The modified damage constitutive equation can be used to more accurately describe the compressive deformation (particularly the compaction stage) of the four types of brittle rocks, with a coefficient of determination greater than 0.9.
The first morphogenetic event of preimplantation development, compaction, was required efficient production of porcine embryos in vitro. Compaction of the porcine embryo, which takes place at post 4-cell stage, is dependent upon the adhesion molecule E-cadherin. The E-cadherin through ${\beta}$-catenin contributes to stable cell-cell adhesion. Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) signaling was found to support the integrity of E-cadherin based cell contacts. In this study, we traced the effects of ROCK-1 on early embryonic development and structural integrity of blastocysts in pigs. Then, in order to gain new insights into the process of compaction, we also examined whether ROCK-1 signaling is involved in the regulation of the compaction mediated by E-cadherin of cellular adhesion molecules. As a result, real-time RT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of ROCK-1 mRNA was presented throughout porcine preimplantation stages, but not expressed as consistent levels. Thus, we investigated the blastocyst formation of porcine embryos treated with LPA and Y27632. Blastocysts formation and their qualities in LPA treated group increased significantly compared to those in the Y27632-treated group (p < 0.05). Then, to determine whether ROCK-1 associates embryonic compaction, we explored the effect of activator and/or inhibitor of ROCK-1 on compaction of embryos in pigs. The rate of compacted morula in LPA treated group was increased compared to that in the Y27632-treated group (39.7 vs 12.0%). Furthermore, we investigated the localization and expression pattern of E-cadherin at 4-cell stage porcine embryos in both LPA- and Y27632-treated groups by immunocytochemical analysis and Western blot analysis. The expression of E-cadherin was increased in LPA-treated group compared to that in the Y27632-treated group. The localization of E-cadherin in LPA-treated group was enriched in part of blastomere contacts compared to that Y27632-treated group. ROCK-1 as a crucial mediator of embryo compaction may plays an important role in regulating compaction through E-cadherin of the cell adhesion during the porcine preimplantation embryo. We concluded that ROCK-1 gene may affect the developmental potential of porcine blastocysts through regulating embryonic compaction.
The present study demonstrates the effect of magnetic pulse compaction and spark plasma sintering on the microstructure and mechanical property of a sintered W body. The relative density of green specimens prepared by magnetic pulse compaction increases with increase in applied pressure, but when the applied pressure is 3.4 GPa or more, some cracks in the specimen are observed. The pressureless-sintered W shows neck growth between W particles, but there are still many pores. The sintered body fabricated by spark plasma sintering exhibits a relative density of above 90 %, and the specimen sintered at 1,600 ℃ after magnetic pulse compaction shows the highest density, with a relative density of 93.6 %. Compared to the specimen for which the W powder is directly sintered, the specimen sintered after magnetic pulse compaction shows a smaller crystal grain size, which is explained by the reduced W particle size and microstructure homogenization during the magnetic pulse compaction process. Sintering at 1,600 ℃ led to the largest Vickers hardness value, but the value is slightly lower than that of the conventional W sintered body, which is attributed mainly to the increased grain size and low sintering density.
Due to the population growth and exhaustion of resource, the development on the harsh environment such as cold weather is emerging as an alternative for new resource development. The permafrost area covers about 14 percent of the world's land area and the global construction market for such area is rapidly expanded. Whereas the developed countries have already recognition of the need for research of coldest place and invested heavily in technology development, the domestic technology for the coldest place development is less developed and related research has rarely been performed. There is not a detailed national specification standard for the strength and deformation properties of the earthworks at sub-zero temperature but simple field directions. Therefore, the D compaction tests were conducted on the sand with fine contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% at room temperature ($18^{\circ}C$), $-3^{\circ}C$ and $-8^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effect of the compaction energy on the compacted soils at sub-zero temperatures. Based on the test results, the larger compaction energy, the larger maximum dry unit weight under sub-zero temperature and D type compaction at $-3^{\circ}C$ show similar max. dry unit weights as those obtained from the compaction at the room temperature. However, compaction at $-8^{\circ}C$ showed significant performance degradation regardless of the compaction energy.
