  • The purpose of this study was to examine how immigrant Korean American parents' aspirations for children's educational attainment are related to their childrearing behavior, their beliefs about the nature of children's intelligence, their level of acculturation, and their beliefs about achievement. One hundred and twenty five immigrant Korean mothers in the United States participated in the study. The present study found that parental expectation for a daughter's educational attainment was significantly related to the mother's educational level. The results of regression analysis also indicated that for daughters, the significant predictors for parents' aspirations for children's educational attainment were the mothers' educational level and parental beliefs about achievement; for sons, significant predictors were the mothers' educational level and parental nurturance.

  • Objectives: Despite the considerable interest in the increase in obesity particularly of socially disadvantaged group in Korea, how obesity varies according to various socio-demographic characteristics still remains largely unanswered. To further develop the understanding of obesity in Korea, the present study focuses on the possibility that the relationship between educational attainment and obesity varies across age. Methods: Using 2010 Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), this study divides the adults into male and female groups and examines the interaction effect of age and educational attainment on obesity through binominal logit models for each group. Results: The most educated male group is more likely to be obese than those who did not complete high school. And the relationship between male's educational attainment and obesity does not significantly change across age. In contrast to male's obesity pattern, female educational attainment has a significant negative association with obesity. The gap in obesity across educational groups converges after middle ages in female. Conclusions: Health policies should pay more attention to those who are more vulnerable to obesity risk in order to effectively reduce obesity.

A sample of 4,727 workers that was selected from Korea Labor Panel Data was analyzed by t-test and multiple regression, and was tested by causal effects among related variables. The major findings were as follows: First, the workers' recognition of their job performance level vs. educational attainment was affected by their annual income, job status, educational attainment, gender, and experiences of human resource development. Second, the workers' job satisfaction was affected by gender, age, educational attainment, health status, job status, annual income, experiences of human resource development, recognition of their job performance level vs. educational attainment, and recognition for their job availability. Third, the factors that had a causal effect on workers' job satisfaction were educational attainment, gender, age, health status, annual income, and experiences of human resource development. Above all, workers' educational attainment had a strong direct effect on job satisfaction, and annual income had a strong indirect effect on it. From these findings, it can be concluded that workers' effort and trial for development and investment of human resource played an important role in increasing job satisfaction.

  • Objectives: This study was to examine the independent and mediating effect of socioeconomic position and social relationship on depression. Methods: The study analyzed the data from the 2014 Korea Welfare Panel Study(n=9,172) using descriptive statistics, Kendall's rank correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis and the Sobel test. Results: Much of the connection between parental socioeconomic position and respondent depression was explained by respondent educational attainment in men but was not in women. A large portion of the association between educational attainment and depression was explained by type of household and satisfaction with social relationship among men. The effect of educational attainment on depression was fully mediated by type of household among women. The effect of type of household on depression was partly mediated by satisfaction with social relationship in men and women. Lastly, educational attainment, type of household and satisfaction with social relationship had an independent association with depression among men, but educational attainment was not statistically significant among women. Conclusions: Our study illuminated the importance of the independent and mediating effect of parental and respondent socioeconomic position and social relationship in the production of depression for South Korean adults.

  • This study aims to find out changes of marital status and average marital life expectancy in Korea according to educational attainment. The study produces Korean marriage life table to accomplish the goal of study by introducing Wolfbein-Wool style working life table. Specific data utilized in this study are collected from the Population & Housing Census 2005 and Death Census 2005. Educational attainment is divided into four categories to accommodate to this study: elementary school course and lower, middle school course, high school course, college course and higher. Marriage rate, divorce rate, widowhood rate and death rate according to educational attainment are used as basicdata to analyze marital life expectancy. The results of this study are as follows: 1. As subjects age is younger, the average marital life expectancy of the highly educated tends to be higher. The disparity of average marital life expectancy according to educational attainment is apt to become narrow as subjects age is older. However, the gap between people who graduated from middle school and high school in older age group does not distinctive. 2. Males marital life expectancy is higher than females controlling for their educational attainment. 3. Males live with their wife for most of their lives but females live alone more than 10 years in every single educational categories. Based on the above, this study concludes that the average marital life expectancy is differentiated among age and sex according to educational attainment. Marital rate tends to be higher as educational level is higher. Divorce rate is lower in the highlyeducated group as their age is younger but this is apt to reverse as age is older. Furthermore, bereavement rate shows division according to educational attainmentsince one tends to marry other who has similar level of education with him or her. Therefore, educational attainment acts as an significant factor in Korean average life expectancy.

  • Using the 2006 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing, this paper investigates the effect of sibling size on children's educational attainment. OLS estimation results show a negative relationship between the number of children and their educational attainment, which confirms the trade-off between child quantity and quality. However, estimation results using the first child's sex as an instrument for sibling size, show no evidence of a quantity-quality trade-off. Our findings suggest that the adverse effect of a larger sibling size on per-child investment in education can be mitigated by other factors such as peer effect.

  • This study which focused on factors and challenges affecting the decision-making of indigenous corn farmers ascertained the determinants that make farmers decide to engage in and continue corn farming activities in Paracelis, Mountain Province, in Northern Philippines. Determinants of decision and motivational factors of corn farmers were examined based on survey responses of 120 indigenous corn farmers by applying chi-square test analysis. Results showed that there were some decision and motivational factors that were significantly related to specific characteristics of corn farmers and there were also similarities of factors that affected the decision making of farmers in terms of engaging in and sustaining corn farming activities. Among the identified driving forces, financing capability and availability of land area were highly related with farm size and with a farmer's educational attainment. Knowledge or experience and interest in corn farming were also related with educational attainment. All the identified driving forces were found to be unrelated to farmers' age. The motivational factor identified as "personally satisfying" was found to be related with age, educational attainment and years in the farming business. Factors which affected a farmer's decision to sustain corn farming activities ("sustaining" factors) such as availability of different networks is highly related to educational attainment, years in the farming business and farm size while high market price of corn was the only "sustaining" factor linked to educational attainment. Based on these factors and cited problems in corn farming, recommendations were offered to address the issues raised by farmers.

  • This study estimates the effect of economic loss including parental job loss and income loss on adolescents' educational attainment before and after family income and poverty are controlled for. Results from this study show that both parental job loss and income loss are negatively associated with the number of schooling years completed by adolescents and the probability that adolescents would enter a college. The negative relationship between economic loss and adolescents' educational attainment persists after income levels are controlled for. Income levels also have a statistically significant effect on adolescents' educational attainment. Among the various measures of income levels, poverty has an especially larger effect. Although the results are not consistent across estimated models, the effects of parental job loss and income loss are as large as that of poverty. Results for the models separately estimated by the sex of adolescents show that female adolescents are more negatively affected by both economic toss and income levels. There is little evidence that male adolescents are negatively affected by economic loss. Yet, male adolescents are negatively affected by income levels including poverty. Findings from this study suggest that societal support for families experiencing economic loss should be improved to avoid the harmful effect of the loss on adolescents' educational attainment. More targeted efforts should be made to financially support families facing both economic loss and poverty.
