  • Purpose. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the educational needs of industry which will hire learner and to develop curriculum to meet the demand. Methods. This study was a descriptive research based on survey results. In each questionnaire, the number of responses and ratios were measured to determine the priorities of the questionnaire items and the education demand was evaluated based on these priorities. Results. The core competency keywords for nurses in industry are knowledge, technology, and communication. In the industry needs for curriculum development, the importance of education to be strengthened for nurse training was found to be core basic nursing skills, nursing process application ability, communication ability, creative nursing problem solving ability, personality and foreign language ability. Conclusion. This study has laid the groundwork for the development of competency based curriculum based on environmental factors and reducing the problems of mis - matching between industry and education.

  • In this study, the effects of metacognitive teaching strategy on the students' scientific inquiry ability and scientific attitude were investigated. For the study, two classes of fourth grade from an elementary school in Busan were chosen. Each class was assigned to the experimental group which metacognitive teaching strategy was applied to and the comparative group that traditional teaching method was applied to. The tests of scientific inquiry ability and scientific attitude were administered before and after the instruction period. The results of this study were as follows. There were significant differences between the experimental group and comparative group in scientific inquiry ability and scientific attitude. It was concluded that metacognitive teaching strategy was more effective in the improvement of students' scientific inquiry ability and scientific attitude.

  • This descriptive study was done to investigate the critical thinking ability of senior nursing students in two types of nursing education programs : associate and baccalaureate programs. Data were conveniently collected from 159 associate degree nursing (ADN)students and 158 baccalaureate degree nursing(BSN)students. All schools were the Ministry of Education accredited and located in Seoul City and Kyung gi Province. These data were collected by self reporting questionaire given over two months from March to May, 1995. The subjects completed the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) and a demographic questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test with the SAS program. The results of this study are as follows 1. The mean of critical thinking ability of the ADN students was 42.69. 2. The mean of critical thinking ability of the BSN students was 47.68. 3. There was significant difference in the WGCTA scores between the ADN and the BSN students (t=7.38 p<0.001) 4. This study suggests that critical thinking ability may increase with higher levels of nursing education. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.

  • The preservice elementary teachers' achievement goal orientations(mastery/ability-approach/ability-avoidance/work-avoidance goal) for science teaching were measured. The student teachers(91 males and 127 females) tended to have the mastery or ability-approach goals rather than the ability-avoidance or work-avoidance goals for science teaching. The male students were more learning focused than were the females, while the female students reported stronger work-avoidance goal orientation than did the males. This study also examined how the preservice teachers' achievement goal orientations were related to their science teaching efficacy beliefs(personal science teaching efficacy belief/science teaching outcome expectancy). As expected, the results showed that there were significantly positive relationships between the mastery or ability-approach goals and science teaching efficacy beliefs, while the significantly negative relationships were found between the ability-avoidance or work-avoidance goal and personal science teaching efficacy belief. The educational implications and future directions were discussed.

  • This study used path analysis to investigate the effect of home environment and teacher variables on children's musical ability and attitudes. Participants were 235 children, their parents and 13 teachers of kindergartens located in G city in Gyeongbuk Province. Instruments were the Primary Measurement of Music Audiation(Gordon, 1986), the Music Teaching Efficacy Instrument(Riggs & Enochs, 1990), and questionnaires about children's musical attitudes, home environment and music activities. Results showed that teacher variables affected children's musical ability directly and indirectly and children's attitude affected their musical ability directly. Psychological and physical variables of the home environment affected children's musical ability and attitudes positively.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of brainwriting instruction on students' experimental design and scientific communication ability in elementary science class. For this purpose, a brainwriting learning for science class was developed and applied. The objects of this study were the 4th graders of both an experimental class (24 students) and a comparative class (24 students) at the N elementary school located in Incheon city. The results of the study were as follows; First, as a result of examining the difference in the experimental design ability between experimental group and comparative group, the experimental group showed higher than the comparative group, it was statistically significant difference(p<.05). Second, a scientific communication ability of the experimental group after applying this program was higher, it was statistically significant differences (p<.05).

  • The preservice elementary teachers' goal orientations for science teaching (mastery/ability-approach/ ability-avoidance/work-avoidance goal) were measured. We also examined how the goal orientations were related to their images of science class (preferred/avoided). The results showed that the student teachers (75 males and 82 females) tended to have the mastery or ability-approach goals rather than the ability-avoidance or work-avoidance goals for science teaching. For avoided class, they tended to show teacher-centered components (eg., teacher: lecturing, students: watching and listening, environment: chalkboard), while rarely to show such teacher-centered components for preferred class. Regarding the relationships between the goal orientations and the images of science class, the significantly positive relationship was found between the ability-approach goal orientation and teacher-centered image of avoided class. However, the teacher-centered image for preferred class was positively related to the ability-avoidance goal orientation. The educational implications and future directions were discussed.

  • Programming is very important subject in computer science and similar computer-related areas such as electronics engineering, etc. Programming is also important for information education for elementary, middle, and high school students since programming is one of the most basic subjects in computer science courses and other similar areas. In current information and knowledge society, raising programming ability is a key factor for everyone's competitiveness. With highly-competitive programming ability, one can enjoy his or her daily life abundantly. He or she also can get a highly-paid job, and make money using his or her programming ability. In this paper, a programming ability assessment tool is developed and introduced for the no-programming experienced. It is very difficult to test programming ability for the no-programming experienced with non-programming tools or activities. In this paper, a programming ability assessment tool is developed based on logical thinking ability. Especially the proposed tool consists of 15 questions for test one's logical thinking ability. The tool does not require any computer science or programming background. The proposed tool will be helpful as criteria for entrance examination or job screening examination for programming-related areas or subjects.
