  • This research features a method that quantitatively evaluates the performance of edge detection algorithms. Contrary to conventional methods that evaluate the performance of edge detection as a function of the amount of noise added to he input image, the proposed method is capable of assessing the performance of edge detection algorithms based on chosen parameters that influence the performance of edge detection. We have proposed a quantitative measure, called average performance index, that compares the average performance of different edge detection algorithms. We have applied the method to the commonly used edge detectors, Sobel, LOG(Laplacian of Gaussian), and Canny edge detectors for noisy images that contain straight line edges and curved line edges. Two kinds of noises i.e, Gaussian and impulse noises, are used. Experimental results show that our method of quantitatively evaluating the performance of edge detection algorithms can facilitate the selection of the optimal dge detection algorithm for a given task.

  • In modern society, the use of the image processing field is increasing rapidly due to the 4th industrial revolution and the development of IoT technology. In particular, edge detection is widely used in various fields as an essential preprocessing process in image processing applications such as image classification and object detection. Conventional methods for detecting an edge include a Sobel edge detection filter, a Roberts edge detection filter, a Prewitt edge detection filter, Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG), and the like. However, existing methods have the disadvantage of showing somewhat insufficient performance of edge detection characteristics in a low-light level environment with low contrast. Therefore, this paper proposes an edge detection algorithm based on contrast analysis to increase edge detection characteristics even in low-light level environments.

  • Error diffusion is a procedure for generating high quality bilevel images from continuous-tone images but blurs the edge information. To solve this problem, we propose the improved method appling edge enhanced weights based on local characteristic of the original images. We consider edge information as local characteristic. First, we produce edges by appling 3$\times$3 sobel operator to the original image. The edge is normalized from 0 to 1. Edge information weights are computed by using sinusoidal function and the normalized edge information. The edge enhanced weights are computed by using edge information weights multiplied input pixels. The proposed method is compared with conventional methods by measuring the edge correlation and quality of the recovered images from the halftoned images. The proposed method provides better quality than the conventional method due to the enhanced edge and represents efficiently the detail edge. Also, the proposed method is improved in edge representation than the conventional method.

  • Though edge detection, an important stage that significantly affecting the performance of image recognition, has been given numerous researches on its execution methods, it still remains as difficult problem and it is one of the components for image recognition applications while it is not the only way to identify an object or track a specific area. This paper, unlike gradient operator using edge detection method, found out edge pixel by referring to 2 neighboring pixels information in binary image and comparing them with pre-defined 4 edge pixels pattern, and detected binary image edge by determining the direction of the next edge detection exploring pixel and proposed method to detect binary image edge by repeating step of edge detection to detect another area edge. When recognizing image, if edge is detected with the use of gradient operator, thinning process, the stage next to edge detection, can be omitted, and with the edge detection algorithm executing time reduced compared with existing area edge tracing method, the entire image recognizing time can be reduced by applying real-time image recognizing system.

  • In this paper, we propose the edge compensation algorithm which connects the adjacent edges without losing the information of the skeletons on the edge image. The proposed edge compensation algorithm is composed of succeeding two steps. In the first step, the uplifted image is obtained by applying the uplifting process to the edge image. The next step is to extract the edge image from the uplifted image using the skeleton extraction algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method connects the adjacent edges without the distortion of the original edge information compared to the traditional method

  • In this paper, a set of TM(template matching) mask using the AM(associative mapping) technique was generated and the edge detection algorithm for a SAR image was proposed. And also, the performance of the proposed edge detection algorithm was tested with the conventional edge detection techniques. The proposed edge detection algorithm created an edge image which was more accurate and clear than the conventional edge detection techniques and the performance of the proposed detection technique was not deteriorated for low intensity area in the image because the uncertainly thresholded value genetated by the conventional detection methods was requested. Also, the number of masks and the detection time were reduced by adjusting resolution of edge detection and the consideration for the threshold value extracting the edge was very intuitive.

  • The semiconductor industry relies on digital optical imaging for the overlay metrology of integrated circuit patterns. One critical performance demand in the particular application of digital imaging is placed on the edge resolution that is defined as the smallest detectable displacement of an edge from its image acquired in digital from. As the critical feature size of integrated circuit patterns reaches below 0.35 micrometers, the edge resolution is required to be less than 0.01 micrometers. This requirement is so stringent that fundamental behaviors of digital optical imaging need to be explored especially for the precision coordinate metrology. Our investigation reveals that the edge resolution shows quasi-random characteristics, not being simply deduced from relevant opto-electronic system parameters. Hence, a stochastic upper bound analysis is made to come up with the worst edge resolution that can statistically well predict actual indeterminate edge resolutions obtained with high magnification microscope objectives.

  • This paper presents a precise edge detection algorithm for the critical dimension (CD) measurement of a Thin-Film Transistor Liquid-Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) pattern. The sigmoid surface function is proposed to model the blurred step edge. This model can simultaneously find the position and geometry of the edge precisely. The nonlinear least squares fitting method (Levenberg-Marquardt method) is used to model the image intensity distribution into the proposed sigmoid blurred edge model. The suggested algorithm is verified by comparing the CD measurement repeatability from high-magnified blurry and noisy TFT-LCD images with those from the previous Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) based sub-pixel edge detection algorithm and error function fitting method. The proposed fitting-based edge detection algorithm produces more precise results than the previous method. The suggested algorithm can be applied to in-line precision CD measurement for high-resolution display devices.
