  • This paper investigates the economic design of synthetic control charts. The synthetic control chart has been proven to be statistically superior to the $\bar{X}$-control chart, but its economic characteristics have not been known. We develop an economic model of the synthetic control chart, based on Duncan's model. The synthetic chart has one more decision variable, the lower control limit for the conforming run length. In addition to this, the significance level and the power of the synthetic chart are more complicated than those of the $\bar{X}$-chart. These features make the optimization problem more difficult. We propose an optimization algorithm by adapting the congruent gradient algorithm. We compare the optimal cost of the synthetic chart with that of (equation omitted)-control chart, under the same input parameter set of Duncan’s. For all cases investigated, the synthetic chart shows superior to the $\bar{X}$-chart. The synthetic control chart is easy to implement, and it has better characteristics than the $\bar{X}$-chart in economical sense as well as in statistical sense, so it will be a good alternative to the traditional control charts.

  • There are many kinds of the mathematical models which are developed for choosing the economic inspection plan. The aim of this paper is to classify these mathematical models, and to examine their characteristics. The mathematical models for choosing the economic inspection plan can be classified into three groups. The first of it is the break-even analysis, the second group of the model is to choose the inspection plan so as to minimize total sampling inspection cost function, and the third group of it is the model to choose the inspection plan which maximize the profit function of the sampling inspection. As a result of examining the characteristics of this classified group of the models the model to choose the inspection plan which minimize total sampling inspection cost is more economical than the other models.

  • Over the past few decades, globalization has been shifting economic power upward to transnational actors on the one hand, and downward to subnational or regional spaces on the other. This phenomenon has resulted in the centrality of territorially delimited subnational regions acting as critical loci of economic governance within a complex and globally distributed value chain of trade and service flows. Within this broader context of industrial restructuring are economic regions that span national borders in their collective assets. The paper focuses on investigating the economic competitiveness and productivity of cross-border (or binational) economic regions. Using the conceptual framework of economic clusters, an econometric model that measures proxies of geographic proximity of firms in the life sciences cluster, and a new binational economic model, the paper examines the key characteristics, potentials and constraints of economic competitiveness and productivity in a cross-border region comprising counties in Western New York and regional municipalities in Southern Ontario. The findings demonstrate the direct and indirect benefits of closer cross-border economic cooperation. The paper then concludes with some policy observations about leveraging cross-border economic clusters for strategic industrial cooperation.

  • The main purpose of this study is to reveal the historical origins of Latin American economic underdevelopment, by answering two research questions; 1)'Why is Latin America underdeveloped?' and 2)'How has colonial experience impacted on the economic growth in Latin America?' First, this essay analyzes long-term tendency of growth domestic product(GDP) per capita data. The data verify that current underdevelopment of Latin American economy is the result of economic stagnation during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when Latin America suffered political and economic instability before and after the independence from Spain and Portugal. It elucidates that colonial experience affected on the economic growth in Latin America. Second, this essay reviews key independent variables of the relationship between colonial experience and economic growth in Latin America. To do so, the study categorizes extant literature into two groups according to the type of its independent variables: 1)internal factor and 2)external factor. Finally, the essay surveys the role of institutions in Latin American economic growth and development. The survey confirms that the importance of institutions in the study of Latin American economic history. In addition, the essay suggests some tasks for further research in Latin American economic history; 1)the construction of basic economic data, 2)the substantialization of the role and characteristics of institutions, and 3)the expansion of research on institutions which overcomes ideological rigidity of existing institutional approach.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of corporate PR practitioners whose opinions were quoted as news sources and of the related articles in the economic section of the nation's three largest newspapers. The results revealed that the PR practitioners were mostly males with the job title of general manager or manager working for large electronics/IT or financing companies in Seoul and near metropolitan areas. In particular, such overwhelming features were more clearly salient in the articles related to conflicts. However, the phenomena seem to have been somewhat eased since 2002 when the newspapers came out with the specialized economic section. Analyzing the articles in terms of the channel of covering news, theme of news, and the existence of any conflict, we found statistically significant differences in the characteristics of PR practitioners. In addition, the comparison between each period before and after the emergence of the specialized economic section also showed statistically significant differences in the characteristics of the PR practitioners in many cases.
