North indicating azimuth angle sensors have been used in airplanes, ships traditionally and nowadays employed in smart phones. For the azimuth and roll angle measurement of the sensor, 3-axis acceleration sensor was added to the 3-axis magnetic field sensor. In this work, we have constructed a measuring system for the measurement of the magnetic field and the angle uncertainty of the magnetic field sensors. Measuring system could be useful not only in non-magnetic laboratory but also in normal laboratory, we constructed small size of 3-axis Helmholtz coils for the compensation environment magnetic field (Earth magnetic field and magnetic field from building) and the generation of magnetic field for the test of magnetic field sensor. The constructed measuring system could compensate environment magnetic field below 10 nT level and generate 3-dimensional magnetic field with magnitude uncertainty of 0.2 % and angle error of $0.2^{\circ}$ within the volume of ${\pm}30mm$ diameter at center of Helmholtz coils. For the conformation of developed measuring system, We tested commercially available 3-axis magnetometer and heading sensor.
Because of the small number of spacecraft available in the Earth's magnetosphere at any given time, it is not possible to obtain direct measurements of the fundamental quantities, such as the magnetic field and plasma density, with a spatial coverage necessary for studying, global magnetospheric phenomena. In such cases, empirical as well as physics-based models are proven to be extremely valuable. This requires not only having high fidelity and high accuracy models, but also knowing the weakness and strength of such models. In this study, we assess the accuracy of the widely used Tsyganenko magnetic field models, T96, T01, and T04, by comparing the calculated magnetic field with the ones measured in-situ by the GOES satellites during geomagnetically disturbed times. We first set the baseline accuracy of the models from a data-model comparison during the intervals of geomagnetically quiet times. During quiet times, we find that all three models exhibit a systematic error of about 10% in the magnetic field magnitude, while the error in the field vector direction is on average less than 1%. We then assess the model accuracy by a data-model comparison during twelve geomagnetic storm events. We find that the errors in both the magnitude and the direction are well maintained at the quiet-time level throughout the storm phase, except during the main phase of the storms in which the largest error can reach 15% on average, and exceed well over 70% in the worst case. Interestingly, the largest error occurs not at the Dst minimum but 2-3 hours before the minimum. Finally, the T96 model has consistently underperformed compared to the other models, likely due to the lack of computation for the effects of ring current. However, the T96 and T01 models are accurate enough for most of the time except for highly disturbed periods.
Rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) materials have shown the possibility of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets due to their elevated transition temperature. While numerous MRI magnet designs have emerged, there is a growing emphasis on estimating the cost before manufacturing. In this paper, we propose two designs of REBCO whole-body MRI magnets: (1) 1.5 T and (2) 3.0 T, the standard center field choices for hospital use, and compare their costs based on conductor usage. The basis topology of the design method is based on discretized solenoids to enhance field homogeneity. Magnetic stress calculation is done to further prove the mechanical feasibility of their construction. Multi-width winding technique and outer notch structure are used to improve critical current characteristic. We apply consistent constraints for current margins, sizes, and field homogeneities to ensure an equal cost comparison. A graph is plotted to show the cost increase with magnetic flux growth. Additionally, we compare our designs to two additional MRI magnet designs from other publications with respect to the cost and magnetic flux, and present the linear relationship between them.
In this study, expressions for the magnetic field and magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical disk were derived. Igneous intrusions and kimberlite structures often have elliptical cylinders with axial symmetry and elliptical cross sections. An elliptical cylinder with varying cross-sectional areas was approximated using stacks of elliptical disks. The magnetic fields of elliptical disks were derived using the Poisson relation, which includes the direction of magnetization in the gravity gradient tensor, as described in a previous study (Rim, 2024). The magnetic gradient tensor due to an elliptical disk is derived by differentiating the magnetic fields, which is equivalent to obtaining ten triple-derivative functions acquired by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical disk three times in each axis direction. Because it is possible to exchange the order of differentiation, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the gravitational potential of the elliptical disk three times, which is then converted into a complex line integral along the closed boundary curve of the elliptical disk in the complex plane. The expressions for the magnetic field and magnetic gradient tensor derived from a complex line integral in complex plane are perfectly consistent with those of the circular disk derived from the Lipschitz-Hankel integral.
In this study we have tried to explain the barrel-shaped morphology for young supernova remnants considering the dynamical effects of the ejecta. We consider the magnetic field amplification resulting from the Rayleigh-Taylor instability near the contact discontinuity. We can generate the synthetic radio image assuming the cosmic-ray pressure and calculate the azimuthal intensity ratio (A) to enable a quantitative comparison with observations. The postshock magnetic field are amplified by shearing, stretching, and compressing at the R-T finger boundary. The evolution of the instability strongly depends on the deceleration of the ejecta and the evolutionary stage of the remnant. the strength of the magnetic field increases in the initial phase and decreases after the reverse shock passes the constant density region of the ejecta. However, some memory of the earlier phases of amplification is retained in the interior even when the outer regions turn into a blast wave. The ratio of the averaged magnetic field strength at the equator to the one at the pole in the turbulent region can amount to 7.5 at the peak. The magnetic field amplification can make the large azimuthal intensity ratio (A=15). The magnitude of the amplification is sensitive to numerical resolution. This mens the magnetic field amplification can explain the barrel-shaped morphology of young supernova remnant without the dependence of the efficiency of the cosmic-ray acceleration on the magnetic field configuration. In order for this mechanism to be effective, the surrounding magnetic field must be well-ordered. The small number of barrel-shaped remnants may indicate that this condition rarely occurs.

CubeSat is a satellite platform that is widely used not only for earth observation but also for space exploration. CubeSat is also used in magnetic field investigation missions to observe space physics phenomena with various shape configurations of magnetometer instrument unit. In case of magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer instrument should be far away from the satellite body to minimize the magnetic disturbances from satellites. But the accommodation setting of the magnetometer instrument is limited due to the volume constraint of small satellites like a CubeSat. In this paper, we investigated that the magnetic field interference generated by the cube satellite was analyzed how much it can affect the reliability of magnetic field measurement. For this analysis, we used a reaction wheel and Torque rods which have relatively high-power consumption as major noise sources. The magnetic dipole moment of these parts was derived by the data sheet of the manufacturer. We have been confirmed that the effect of the residual moment of the magnetic torque located in the middle of the 3U cube satellite can reach 36,000 nT from the outermost end of the body of the CubeSat in a space without an external magnetic field. In the case of accurate magnetic field measurements of less than 1 nT, we found that the magnetometer should be at least 0.6 m away from the CubeSat body. We expect that this analysis method will be an important role of a magnetic cleanliness analysis when designing a CubeSat to carry out a magnetic field measurement.
The Earth is exposed to constant outflow of the solar wind from the outer layers of the Sun, and violent transient events taking place from active regions increase the energy flux of both radiation and particles leaving the Sun. Thus the space surrounding the Earth is a highly dynamic environment that responds sensitively to changes in radiation, particles and magnetic field arriving from the Sun. Nowadays, it becomes increasingly important to understand how the physical system of Earth-space works and how the space around the Earth connects to interplanetary space. In the present paper we describe how explosive solar events, such as CME(Coronal Mass Ejection) and flares affect the Earth-space environment and how the space weather reacts to them. Practical consequences are presented to demonstrate why a broader view of Earth's environment is greatly needed to cope with modern day's inhabitation problem in a rapidly developing space age.
Steel slag has been considered as an industrial waste. A huge amount of slag is produced as a byproduct and the steel slag usually has been dumped in a landfill site. However the steel slag contains valuable resources such as iron, copper, manganese, and magnesium. Superconducting magnetic separation has been applied on recovery of the valuable resources from the steel slag and this process also has intended to reduce the waste to be dumped. Cryo-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting magnet with 100 mm bore and 600 mm of height was used as the magnetic separator. The separating efficiency was evaluated in the function of magnetic field. A steel slag was ground and analyzed for the composition. Iron containing minerals were successfully concentrated from less iron containing portion. The separation efficiency was highly dependent on the particle size giving higher separating efficiency with finer particle. The magnetic field also effects on the separation ratio. Current study showed that an appropriate grinding of slag and magnetic separation lead to the recovery of metal resources from steel slag waste rather than dumping all of the volume.
The quality of MT (magnetotellurics) data highly depends on the level of artificial noise form industrial sources. We have conducted the feasibility study of MT noise modelling using digital spatial data and spatial modelling through the comparison between the predicted and the measured MT noises. A simple noise model predicting the intensity of electromagnetic field radiated from the latent noise sources, that is, the electric facilities in the building, road and high-voltage powerline, is developed in consideration of the propagation property of electromagnetic waves. From the analysis of correlation between the predicted and the measured noise power, the correlation coefficients of electric field are higher than those of magnetic field in whole frequency band. The magnetic field component has the high correlation in the narrow band near 60 Hz only. The spatial noise modelling proposed in this study would provide some useful informations for the MT surveys in the noisy environment like urban area.
A drum type of high gradient magnetic separator was designed and optimized by computer simulations. The magnetic separator consists of high performance rare earth $(Nd_2Fe_14B)$ permanent magnets and magnetic yokes of extremely low carbon steel interconnecting the permanent magnets. Magnetic circuits of the separator were simulated for the aim of the least cost, highest magnetic strength and most efficient function by using specialized S/W (Vector Field Program) employing the Finite Element Method. The magnetic flux density was provided to be strong enough to collect the invisible fine metal particles from the surface of hot rolled steel plate with the efficiency of almost 95%.
