Recently, problem of earth environment being attended with international issue, people are concerned about the environmentally-friendly and renewable biomass energy. Especially, the forest biomass is more important because Korea have to control carbon footprint for Kyoto Protocol and Convention on Climate Change. In case of Korea, forest area covers the land about 2/3 of all country. It is needed that more economical and efficient method to estimate the biomass by remote sensing data which include wide coverage and is progressed by one-step. In this study, we estimate forest biomass with LiDAR data and aerial photograph. Three biomass equation is used and estimate mean biomass of single tree and entire biomass in plots. The results are compared with field data. $R^2$ of the mean biomass of single tree is greater than 0.8 and that of entire biomass in plots is greater than 0.65. In conclusion, the method using remote sensing data is verified more economical and efficient than previous field data method.
In this study, we conducted a comprehensive study to analyze the environmental behavior of airborne Ni for the proper establishment of basic control tactics based on the metal concentration data sets collected from the major cities in Korea for the 14 year period(1991 through 2004). The mean concentration of Ni determined from all cities during the entire study period varied from as little as 7.38+6.70 ng $m^3$(Won Ju) to the maximum of 41.4+26.2 ng $m^3$ in a highly industrialized city of An San. However, the mean concentrations of Ni from most cities generally fell in the range of 10 to 20 ng $m^3$. When the Ni concentration data in all cities are compared between the former half(1991 to 1997) and the latter half period(1998 to 2004), a reduction in its concentration levels was seen dominantly between the two study period. Comparison of seasonal patterns generally indicated the enhanced concentrations of Ni during spring/winter relative to summer/fall term. The overall results of this study suggest that the source processes of Ni are diverse enough to exhibit moderately diverse patterns between different cities. Considering that relative enhancement in Ni levels is observed from most of industrial and/or large scale cities, a development of adequate control tactics for Ni is highly desirable.
This study was conducted to develop new mattress systems with vegetation base materials for protecting stream bank and rapid rehabilitation. Vegetation base materials are primarily compounded with fine soil, organic composts and peat moss as plant fibers, a water retainer and a soil improver. Peat moss can usually provide necessary natural fibers and organic materials in soil. Especially, peat moss can absorb up to 25 times its own weight in water and is therefore valued as a water retainer to prevent drying effect of vegetation base materials which can harm the growth of vegetation in mattresses. Normally mattress systems resist the lateral earth pressures or stream power by their own weight. Therefore, filled materials must have suitable weight, compressive strength and durability to resist the loading, as well as the effects of water and weathering. In this project, 100 to 200-mm clean, hard stones were basically specified, and about 50-mm rubbles were also used. Test application of new mattress system carried out in the stream bank of a small stream in the Gwangreung experimental forest, belonging to Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in December 16th, 2006. As a result of the monitoring of vegetation coverage of test application plots (each plot size is 4 by 2 m), the coverage of all plots reached 100% in the end of May, 2007 (approximately 50 days passed after the first gemination of vegetation). The coverage of the plots using big hard stones and organic composts and the plots containing peat moss increased more rapidly. The results show that peat moss is effective to retain soil moisture and establish more sound environment for vegetation gemination.
Forestry as with all land matters, under the Constitution, is a State matter. Thus the States, numbering 14, have considerable autonomy in decisions on forestry and related matters. However, the Federal Government, having jurisdiction over such issues as defence, education and research, endeavours to coordinate, standardise and advise the States on matters where the States have jurisdiction. However, forestry being a major revenue earner, is jealously guarded by the States. Under such circumstances and recognising the interdependencies of impacts of decisions at the State level, the institutional organisations play an important role in coordinating state activities to ensure that the benefits to the country as a whole are not sacrificed in favour of interests of individual state. Various legislative mechanisms have been established to ensure this coordinated effort. A National Forestry Council forms the apex of national political coordination. The Federal Forestry Department is responsible for coordination of developmental activities at the State level, which are implemented be the State Forestry Departments within Peninsular Malaysia. Research is carried out centrally by the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia(FRIM), a statutory body formed in 1985 from a research division of the Forestry Department. The Stares of Sabah and Sarawak have their own Forestry Departments, independent of the Federal Department, and each with its own research unit independent of FRIM. Tertiary education in forestry is the sole responsibility of the Agricultural University at Serdang with a campus for Diploma level training in Sarawak. In the developmental area in the State of Sabah, institutions have been formed to focus on specific areas of activities. The Sabah Foundation is responsible for the long term development of the State forests with a concession of about one million ha. Sabah Forest Development Authority(SAFODA) was formed to carry out reforestation of denuded areas. Sabah Forest Industries Ltd.(SFI) is responsible for the country's only integrated pulp and paper industry with its own afforestation program to support its resource supply. In Peninsular Malaysia various states have established State Corporations to manage large "sustained yield" concessions. While wildlife and state parks are managed by the respective forestry departments in Sabah and Sarawak, it is the responsibility of a separate department in Peninsula Malaysia called the Department of Wildlife and National Parks(under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment). Timber trade legislation and promotion in the Peninsular is the responsibility of the Malaysian Timber Industries Board(MTIB) for Peninsular Malaysia and the Sarawak Timber Industries Development Corporation(STIDC) in Sarawak. In the area of NGOs ; the Institute of Foresters Malaysia, is the professional body of forestry in the country. A Malaysian Forestry Society caters for the public participation and interest. Other environmentally related NGOs such as the Malayan Nature Society, the Environmental Protection Society, World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth and the Consumers Associations also involve themselves in specific forestry activities. A number of timber trade associations are also formed by the private sector to assist the industries.

This study compared junior high school science textbooks(for grade $7{\sim}9$) of the USA, Australia, Japan, and Korea. Specifically, the amount and pattern of knowledge, process skills, activities, contexts, nature of science, and integration topics were compared in terms of country, grade, and content. The results of analysis are as follow: 1) Physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science were equally distributed in textbooks of Korea and Japan. In Korean textbooks, "law" was more emphasized compared with other countries' textbooks. 2) The most popular process skills were proportion and controlling variables in Korea's textbooks. Correlation, cause/effect, and proportion in Japan's textbooks. Controlling variables and data transformation in textbooks of USA and Australia. 3) Experiment and observation were the most popular activities in textbooks of Korea, Japan, and Australia. In textbooks of the USA, observation, experiment, survey, practice, and measurement activities were used evenly. 4) In textbooks of Korea and Japan, pure science and natural environment contexts were the most popular. 5) There was no chapter dealing with nature of science in textbooks of Korea and Japan. 6) Integration topics between science and technology were the most popular. Based on these findings, several implications on Korean science textbooks were discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning contents presented in high school science and in pre-service science textbooks of college of education, and to examine educational implications for pre-service science teachers by analysing their connection to each other. High school science is called as 'convergence science.' Seven high school science textbooks and eleven science textbooks related to physics, chemistry, biological science, and earth science for pre-service teachers were selected to analyse learning contents. The relationship between high school science with those of college-level science textbooks for pre-service science teachers was found when the learning contents were compared. Science textbooks for pre-service science teachers have the biggest number of learning contents on the chapter 'Energy and Environment' of high school science. About 86.6% of learning contents of high school science were introduced on textbooks on science, but pre-service teachers should learn the remainder. The part of learning contents presented in high school science textbooks was higher than the college-level for pre-service science teachers. Moreover, the part of learning contents was included in Engineering & Technology. And these required a special teacher education. Accordingly, the results suggested that learning contents for high school science should be optimized and reduced. Also, various educational programs should be developed and educational curriculum for pre-service science teachers should be revised.

The purpose of this study is to examine implications of pre-service science teacher training by analyzing science field integration and connection between learning content presented in 'Integrated Science' for high school students based on the 2015 revised science curriculum, and in pre-service science learning materials (textbooks) of the college of education. For this study, the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum and 11 types of pre-service science teachers' learning materials related to physics, chemistry, biological science, and earth science were selected. The results were as follows. Most of the learning content presented in the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum had integrated two or more science fields. Also, almost all learning content presented in the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum were included in pre-service science teachers' education content, with educational content for chemistry introduced at the highest rate. The textbooks for pre-service science teachers had the most learning contents of 'Energy and Environment' domain of 'Integrated Science' for high school students. Accordingly, these results suggest that 'integrated science materials' should be developed for proper the curriculum implementation. Also, training courses for science teachers responsible for 'Integrated Science' are required. Furthermore, a revised curriculum for the college of education and a method to link with certification examinations for secondary school teachers are needed.

The research aimed to investigate characteristics of middle school students enrolled in a science gifted education center affiliated with university in terms of multiple intelligence, self-regulated learning and personality traits. The 89 subjects in the study responded to questionnaires of multiple intelligence, self-regulated learning ability and a personality trait in October, 2011. It was found that both science and math gifted students presented intrapersonal intelligence as strength and logical-mathematical intelligence as weakness. While physics and earth science gifted ones showed spatial intelligence as strength, chemistry and biology gifted ones did intrapersonal intelligence. For self-regulated learning ability, both science and mathematics gifted students tend to show higher levels than general students, in particular, cognitive and motivation strategies comparatively higher than meta-cognition and environment condition strategies. Characteristics of personal traits widely distributed across science and mathematics gifted students, showing that each gifted student presented distinct characteristics individually. Those gifted students showing certain intelligence such as spatial, intrapersonal, or natural intelligences as strength also showed different characteristics of self-regulated learning ability and personal traits among students showing same intelligence as strength. It was concluded that science and mathematics gifted students showed various characteristics of multiple intelligences, self-regulated learning ability, and personal traits across science and mathematics areas.

Although there are several experimental techniques to evaluate the seismic behavior and performance of civil structures, small-scale models in mast of physical tests, instead of prototypes or large-scale models, would be used due to a limitation on capacities of testing equipments. However, the inelastic seismic response prediction of small-scale models has some discrepancies inherently because the similitude law is generally derived in the elastic range. Thus, a special attention is required to regard the seismic behavior of small-scale models as one of prototypes. In this paper, differences between prototypes and small-scale models pseudodynamically tested on steel column specimens are investigated and an alternative to minimize them is suggested. In general, small-scale models could have the distorted stiffness induced from some experimental errors on test setup, steel fabrication and so on. Therefore, a modified similitude law considering both a scale factor for length and a stiffness ratio of small-scale model to prototype is proposed. Using the modified similitude law to compensate experimental errors, the pseudodynamic test results from modified small-scale model are much improved as compared with the results of prototype. According to the pseudodynamic test results of small-scale steel models, it can be concluded that the modified similitude law proposed could be effective in simulating the seismic response of prototype structures.
The authors designed a new technique to measure dielectric constant of a soil media by Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) system and its measurement sensor probe with different length such as 7m, 10cm and 15cm for estimating the variations of dielectric constant. Measurement of dielectric constant of soil material is possible to measure an interference wave generated by between incidence wave and reflection wave which are detected to electro-magnetic wave through the directional coupler at the high frequency range,0.1 to 1.7GHz, by FDR system. The obtained experimental results verified that the technique is very promising for non-destructive and continuous soil volumetric water content measurement monitoring in a laboratory. The relationship between the soil volumetric water content and the dielectric constant of soil media (standard sand) was expressed by a single regression ewe independent of soil texture at a small experimental error. Also the derived regression curve coincided well with that obtained by Topp curve.
