  • When vehicle travelling along the track which has irregularity such as vertical profile, dynamic forces arise at the Wheel/Rail contact patch by wheel/rail interaction. In particular short wavelength irregularities on dipped joint and small stiffness of connecting rail bring about intense wheel/rail dynamic effects at higher speed. In the paper, a new model for dipped joint rail is developed to study dynamic behavior of track. A cusp behavior on dipped joint was defined by its amplitude and decay factor, which was presented by FRA track classes. The result of case study are presented, which show wheel rail contact force in each track classes, train operation speed and bending flexible rigidity ratio of fishplates which are connecting the rail.

  • Analyzing dynamic performance between pantograph and contact wire depends on mechanical and electrical conditions such as contact force, currents, aerodynamics of pantograph and tension of overhead contact wire. For the characteristic of dynamic performance between pantograph and overhead contact wire, various evaluation systems are used to measuring of the interaction of the contact line and the pantograph. Among the various methods, the contact force and percentage of arcing are intended to prove the safety and the quality of the current collection system on the train. However, these methods are only capable of measuring on the train which are installed measurement systems. Therefore in this paper, a track-side monitoring system was implemented to measure electrical characteristics from active overhead contact wire systems in order to constantly estimate current collection performance of railway operation. In addition, a method to analyze loss of contact phenomena was proposed. According to simulation results, the proposed system was capable of measuring abnormal electrical behavior of pantograph and contact wires on the track-side. The advantage of the proposed system is possible to detect loss of contact or any other electrical abnormalities of all types of trains within sections from sub to sub without the need to install any on-board equipment on trains.

  • With the development of micro-technology, the demand for micro actuator is increasing. But, it is difficult to achieve high resolution and long travel range simultaneously with the conventional actuators. So, the noncontact surface actuator was proposed. This actuator can realize high dynamic range and the planar motion without complex cross-axis linear slides. This paper describes a magnetically suspended linear actuator for developing a non-contact surface actuator. The operating principle and the structure of the proposed linear actuator are similar to switched reluctance motor, but the proposed linear actuator utilizes normal force and propulsion force simultaneously. With this characteristic, the system can be simpler than other non-contact surface actuator.

  • In this paper, we introduce the on-line test of the current collection characteristics for HSR 350x(Korea High Speed Train project) that have been performed in the Kyoung-bu high-speed line since 2002. Through the analysis of measured data during on-line test, the variation trends of contact force between pantograph and catenary according to the track conditions and driving patterns are reviewed. This study shows that the track conditions do not affect on the dynamic performance between pantograph and the driving patterns are important factors in determining the good interaction of them.

  • In micro automation technology, the concurrent realization of a high resolution and a large operating rage has been achieved by a dual actuator, usually called by piggy-back system, conventionally. But, because of its manufacturing cost, the complexity of control, and the limit of overall bandwidth, the contract-free and single servo actuators have been suggested with specific applications. In this paper, we suggest a novel non-contact surface actuator suing combination of the Lorentz force and the magnetized force, and discuss the actuating principles including an analytical approach. Differently from the existing planar system, an operating range of the suggested system can be expanded by an additional attachment of active elements. Therefore, it is estimated to be suitable for the next-generation moving system.

  • Impedance control is recognised as one of the most proper control scheme to carry out the assembly tasks, since it can control the dynamic relationship between the manipulator and environment directly. However, it is well known that the contact force cannot be controlled directly using the impedance control. Also impedance parameters should be properly defined depending on the task to be performed. We propose a new position based impedance control, which has self-adjusted impedance parameters and can control the contact force explicitly, Impedance parameters, as time-varying parameters, are adjusted automatically based on the measured contact force and the position error during the task. A proposed algorithm was implemented on the peg-in-hole task with the industrial manipulator. We shows the effectiveness of proposed control method experimentally.

  • This study aims to create a numerical analysis model which can investigate the dynamic interaction between pantograph and overhead contact wire used for a high-speed railway vehicle, and validate the simulation results according to EN 50318 standard. Finite element analysis models of pantograph and overhead contact line are created using SAMCEF, a commercial FE analysis program. The mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values of contact forces are obtained. The simulation results are validated according to EN 50318, and the possibility of simulating the collecting characteristic of an actual pantograph system by using the developed model is discussed.

  • Corrugation of railway track can be caused by the various dynamic behaviors of traveling wheels and track. In this paper, the coupled vibrations of traveling wheel and railway track are analyzed as the cause of corrugations. To analyze the coupled vibration, the track supported by the sleepers and the traveling wheels are identified to the elastically supported infinite beam and the spring-mass system which runs at constant speed. The Hertzian contact spring is considered between the infinite beam and spring-mass system. The dynamic responses of elastically supported infinite beam and spring-mass system are calculated. The cause and development of rail corrugation are discussed in the view point of contact force fluctuation affected by the elastic supports and the corrugated surface profile on the track. By the obtained results, the possibilities of resonance are checked between the excitation by the corrugated surface profile and the natural frequency of contact spring-mass system. It may be thought to a development of railway corrugation.

  • This paper presents the vibration analysis and the performance evaluation of cantilevers with probing tips for non-contact scanning probe microscopy. One of the current issues of the scanning probe microscopy technology is to increase the measurement speed, which is closely tied with the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. The primary concern in this research is to investigate the relation between the maximum possible speed of non-contact scanning probe microscopy and the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. First, the finite element analysis is made for the vibration characteristics of various cantilevers in use. The computed natural frequencies of the cantilevers are in good agreement with measured ones. Then, each cantilever is tested with topographic measurement for a standard sample with the scanning speed changed. The performances of cantilevers are analyzed along with the natural frequencies of cantilevers. Experiments are also performed to test the effects of how to attach cantilevers in the piezo-electric actuator. Finally, measurement sensitivity has been analyzed to enhance the performance of scanning probe microscopy.
