  • We present the far-ultraviolet fluorescent molecular hydrogen ($H_2$) emission map observed with FIMS/SPEAR for ~76% of the sky. The fluorescent $H_2$ emission is found to be saturated by strong dust extinction at the optically thick, Galactic plane region. However, the extinction-corrected intensity of fluorescent $H_2$ emission is found to have strong linear correlations with the well-known tracers of the cold interstellar medium, such as the E(B-V) color excess, neutral hydrogen column density N(HI), $H{\alpha}$ emission, and CO $J=1{\rightarrow}0$ emission. The all-sky molecular hydrogen column density map is also obtained using a photodissociation region model. We also derive the gas-to-dust ratio, hydrogen molecular fraction ($f_{H2}$), and $CO-to-H_2$ conversion factor ($X_{CO}$) of the diffuse interstellar medium. The gas-to-dust ratio is consistent with the standard value $5.8{\times}10^{21}atoms\;cm^{-2}mag^{-1}$, and the $X_{CO}$ tends to increase with E(B-V), but converges to the Galactic mean value $1.8{\times}10^{20}cm^{-2}K^{-1}km^{-1}s$ at optically thick regions with E(B-V)>2.0.

  • We developed an efficient Monte-Carlo algorithm to solve dust-scattering radiative transfer problems for continuum radiation. The method calculates the scattered intensities for various anisotropic factors ($g_i$) all at once, while actual photon packets are tracked following a scattering phase function given by a single anisotropic factor ($g_0$). The algorithm was tested by applying the method to a dust cloud embedding a star at the cloud center and found to provide accurate results within the statistical fluctuation that is intrinsic in Monte-Carlo simulations. It was found that adopting $g_0$ = 0.4 - 0.5 in the algorithm is most efficient. The method would be efficient in estimating the anisotropic factor of the interstellar dust by comparing the observed data with radiative transfer models.

  • To reproduce the multiple broad peaks and the fine spectral features in the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of T Tauri stars, we model dust around T Tauri stars using a radiative transfer model for multiple isothermal circumstellar dust shells. We calculate the radiative transfer model SEDs for multiple dust shells using the opacity functions for various dust grains at different temperatures. For six sample stars, we compare the model results with the observed SEDs including the Spitzer spectral data. We present model parameters for the best fit model SEDs that would be helpful to understand the overall structure of dust envelopes around classical T Tauri stars. We find that at least three separate dust components are required to reproduce the observed SEDs. For all the sample stars, an innermost hot (250-550 K) dust component of amorphous (silicate and carbon) and crystalline (corundum for all objects and forsterite for some objects) grains is needed. Crystalline forsterite grains can reproduce many fine spectral features of the sample stars. We find that crystalline forsterite grains exist in cold regions (80-100 K) as well as in hot inner shells.

  • Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are generally dominated by old low-mass stars, which are not very productive of dust, and hot interstellar plasmas, which are very destructive of dust. Thus ETGs provide harsh environments for survival of dust. It has been found that some ETGs contain a large amount of dust, and yet its supply mechanism is not understood well. We present the result of a systematic study of dust in ETGs with the AKARI mid- and far-infrared all-sky surveys. From the AKARI result and the Ks band data obtained by ground-based telescopes, we find that there is a global correlation between the dust mass and stellar luminosity. We also compare the AKARI all-sky survey result with the CO data to discuss origins of dust in ETGs.

  • We compare mass-loss rates of OH/IR stars obtained from radio observations with those derived from the dust radiative transfer models and IR observations. We collect radio observational data of OH maser and CO line emission sources for a sample of 1533 OH/IR stars listed in Suh & Kwon (2011). For 1259 OH maser, 76 CO(J=1-0), and 55 CO(J=2-1) emission sources, we compile data of the expansion velocity and mass-loss rate. We use a dust radiative transfer model for the dust shell to calculate the mass-loss rate as well as the IR color indices. The observed mass-loss rates are in the range predicted by the theoretical dust shell models corresponding to $\dot{M}=10^{-8}M_{\odot}/yr-10^{-4}M_{\odot}/yr$. We find that the dust model using a simple mixture of amorphous silicate and amorphous $Al_2O_3$ (20% by mass) grains can explain the observations fairly well. The results indicate that the dust radiative transfer models for IR observations generally agree with the radio observations. For high mass-loss rate OH/IR stars, the mass-loss rates obtained from radio observations are underestimated compared to the mass-loss rates derived from the dust shell models. This could be because photon momentum transfer to the gas shell is not possible for the physical condition of high mass-loss rates. Alternative explanations could be the effects of different dust-to-gas ratios and/or a superwind.

  • The Henyey-Greenstein (H-G) phase function, which is characterized by a single parameter, has been generally used to approximate the realistic dust-scattering phase function in investigating scattering properties of the interstellar dust. Draine (2003) proposed a new analytic phase function with two parameters and showed that the realistic phase function is better represented by his phase function. If the H-G and Draine's phase functions are significantly different, using the H-G phase function in radiative transfer models may lead to wrong conclusions about the dust-scattering properties. Here, we investigate whether the H-G and Draine's phase functions would indeed produce significant differences in radiative transfer calculations for two simple configurations. For the uniformly distributed dust with an illuminating star at the center, no significant difference is found. However, up to ~ 20% of difference is found when the central star is surrounded by a spherical-shell dust medium and the radiation of $\lambda$ < $2000\;{\AA}$ is considered. It would mean that the investigation of dust-scattering properties using the H-G phase function may produce errors of up to ~ 20% depending on the geometry of dust medium and the radiation wavelength. This amount of uncertainty would be, however, unavoidable since the configurations of dust density and radiation sources are only approximately available.

  • Detailed 3 dimensional structure of Asian dust plume has been analyzed from the retrieved aerosol data from two different satellites which are the Korea's $1^{st}$ geostationary satellite, namely the Communication, Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) spacecraft launched in 2010, and the NASA's Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). COMS spacecraft provides the first time resolved aerial aerosol maps by the systematically well-calibrated multispectral measurements from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) instrument. GOCI data are used here to evaluate intensity, spatial distribution, and long-range transport of Asian dust plume during 1~2 May 2011. We found that the strong Asian dust plume showing AOT of 2~5 was lofted to the altitude around 2~4 km above the Earth's surface and transported over Yellow Sea with a speed of about 25 km/hr. The CALIPSO extinction coefficient and particulate depolarization ratio (PDR) profiles confirmed that nonspherical dust particles were enriched in the dust plume. This study is a first example of quantitative integration of GOCI and CALIOP measurements for clarifying the overall structure of an Asian dust event.

  • Within the context of the hugely successful SAGE-LMC and SAGE-SMC surveys, Spitzer photometry observations of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds have revealed millions of infrared point sources in each galaxy. The brightest infrared sources are generally dust producing and mass-losing evolved stars, and several tens of thousands of such stars have been classified. After photometrically classifying these objects, the dust production by several kinds of evolved stars - such as Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and Red Supergiants - can be determined. SAGE-Spec is the spectroscopic follow-up to the SAGE-LMC survey, and it has obtained Spitzer-IRS $5-40{\mu}m$ spectroscopy of about 200 sources in the LMC. Combined with archival data from other programs, observations at a total of ~1000 pointings have been obtained in the LMC, while ~250 IRS pointings were observed in the SMC. Of these, a few hundred pointings represent dust producing and mass-losing evolved stars, covering a range in colors, luminosities, and thus mass-loss rates. Red Supergiants and O-rich and C-rich AGB stars - the main dust producers - are well represented in the spectroscopic sample. This paper will summarize what we know about the mineralogy of dust producing evolved stars, and discuss their relative importance in the total dust budget.
