  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a subsequent infection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS) virus to pigs with A. pleuropneumonia in pigs. Twenty three 7-weeks-old commercial pigs were infected with PRRS virus and/or A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 5 intratracheally. Feed conversion, clincal signs, gross and histopathological lesions and immunohistochemical findings were examined. 1. Feed conversion ratio in dual-infected pigs with PRRS virus and A. pleuropneumoniae were higher than that of single- infected pigs with PRRS virus or A. pleuropneumoniae. 2. Dual-infected pigs with PRRS virus followed by A. pleuropneumoniae showed more severe clinical signs and gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical pulmonary lesions. The results indicated that dual infections with PRRS virus and A. pleuropneumoniae caused more severe respiratory lesions and growth retardation in pigs than single infection with PRRS virus or A. pleuropneumoniae.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a subsequent infection of PCV2 on piglets with PEDV. In clinical signs, the signs observed in dual-infected with PEDV and PCV2 piglets and alone infected with PEDV piglets ranged from diarrhoea to vomiting and dehydration. Dual-infected piglets developed signs of anorexia, vomiting and watery diarrhoea within 12 hpi. Nevertheless alone -infected piglets caused pasty diarrhea at first. In mortality, dual infections showed 25%, but alone -infections showed 8.3%, respectively. In gross findings, piglets dual-infected with PEDV and PCV2 appeared the severe findings of congestion, distension of lumen, milder curdes of undigested milk in stomach than those of single-infected piglets. In histopathological findings, piglets of dual-infection group appeared the more severe findings of villous atrophy and fusion, congesion, exfoliation, vacuolation, squamation, loss of cilia and proliferation of crypt. Significant (P<0.05) decrease in VH:CD ratio in dually infected piglets compared to piglets from alone-PEDV infections. In immunohistochemical findings, strong hybridization signals in dual-infected piglets observed moderate to severe villous atrophy or vacuolation with positive cells arranged continuously over the villi. In the lumen, exfoliated enterocytes were strongly positive in dual-infected piglets. A number of PEDV-positive cells in dual-infected pigs were significantly higher than that in alone PEDV-infected piglets.

  • To facilitate their spread, plant viruses have developed several methods for dispersal including insect and seed transmission. While insect transmission requires virus stability against insect digestion, seed-transmitted viruses have to overcome barriers to entry into embryos. Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) is transmitted through seed at levels typically below 0.1%, but co-infection with Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) enhanced the seed transmission rate of BPMV in one experiment. In contrast, the rate of SMV seed transmission was not affected by BPMV co-infection. In a second preliminary study, the rate of SMV transmission was lower in an isoline of Williams 82 that contained a null mutation for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor gene than in Williams 82. In this preliminary study, we observed that factors such as protease inhibitor expression and dual infection may affect the frequency of seed transmission of BPMV and SMV.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a subsequent infection of PCV2 on piglets with PEDV. The results obtained were as follows: Antibodies against PCV2 and PEDV were detected at 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72h postinfection. And the antibody titers of alone infections with PEDV were gradually reduced and increased from 60 hpi to 72 hpi. Whereas, the antibody titers of dual infections with PCV2 and PEDV were gradually reduced all the time. PEDV antigens were detected at 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hpi, being seen almost exclusively in feces and small intestines from PEDV-infected piglets and PCV2-coinfected piglets. The detection rate of PEDV in feces and jejunum tissues by RT-PCR were 94.9% and 91.1% in dual infections and 87.1% and 83.6% in alone infections with PEDV, respectively. In dual infected piglets, significantly more PEDV antigens were detected in the feces and small intestines tissues at 24 hpi (P<0.05) than in the same feces and tissues of the alone infected piglets. Thereafter, at 72 hpi significantly more PEDV antigens (P<0.05) was detected in the jejunal tissues of the dual infected piglets with than of alone PEDV-infected piglets. The detection rate of PEDV antigen in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum by IFA were 91.3%, 91.3% and 83.3% in dual infected piglets and 75.0%, 83% and 75% in alone infected piglets, respectively. Intense and specific fluorescence signals were more often seen within jejunal villous enterocytes in dual infected piglets than alone infected piglets.

  • Background We report the efficacy of a dual-plane approach using a Dufourmentel skin flap with a purse-string suture of the de-epithelized dermis to manage pseudoaneurysm at the vascular access site for hemodialysis. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted of 61 patients from 2013 to 2018 with pseudoaneurysms at the arteriovenous fistula or graft who were treated with rhomboid excision, vessel repair with a purse-string suture, and a full-thickness Dufourmentel skin flap. The success rate was defined as the probability of complete wound closure and intact vascular access patency without infection or other complications. Results The success rate was 93.4% at 6 months postoperatively. Complications included newly occurring pseudoaneurysms (n=2), wound dehiscence (n=1) and bleeding (n=1). There were no complications such as stenosis or thrombosis from the procedure. Conclusions A dual-plane approach using a Dufourmentel skin flap with a purse-string suture for vessel repair was shown to be a favorable option for managing stable, small (diameter <2 cm) pseudoaneurysms without infection, rapid expansion, or patency issues of the vascular access.

  • Plant growth promoting fungi(PGPF) obtained from zoysiagrass rhizosphere offer dual advantages - induse systemic disease resistance response in cucumber to C. orbiculare infection and cause enhancement of plant growth and increase yield. PGPF protected plants either by colonizing roots or by their metabolites. PGPF offer an advantage by protecting plants for more than 9 weeks and 6 week in the greenhouse and field. PGPF-induced plants limited pathogen spore germination and decreased the number of infection hyphae on the leaf, and increased lignification at places of attempted pathogen infection, thus reducing the pathogen spread. PGPF elicited increased activities of chitinascs, glucanases, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase to C. orbiculare infection in cucumber plants. The role of PGPF in elevating cucumber defense response to pathogen infection suggests potential application of PGPF as biological control agents.

  • Dislocation after a total hip arthroplasty occurs in approximately 1% of patients; however, the frequency is much higher after revision surgery. To prevent dislocation, use of a larger femoral head is recommended, and a dual mobility femoral head has been introduced. However, reducing the dual mobility femoral head to the acetabular component is difficult in cases involving contracture in the soft tissue around the joint. A 72-year-old male patient who developed a periprosthetic joint infection underwent two-stage revision surgery using MUTARS®. Two months after the revision, the hip joint became dislocated and manual reduction was attempted; however, dislocation occurred again. During another revision using a dual mobility bearing, the soft tissue around the hip joint was too tight to reduce. The problem was overcome by first repositioning the dual mobility head into the acetabular socket, followed by assembly of the diaphyseal portion of the implant.

  • Graft infections after aortic replacement are a rare, but severe complication. Because surgical removal of the infection source is essential, an accurate diagnosis is required to prevent unnecessary treatment. Both of the patients described herein were diagnosed with graft infections using dual-modality positron emission tomography-computed tomography; one patient was a false-positive, and the other was confirmed with an infection.

  • Effect of dual inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular(VA) mycorrhizal fungi, Glomus mosseae, and Rhizobium meliloti R455 on growth, nodulation, and nitrogenase activity of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Vernal) were examined in pot experiment. After 63 days growth, shoot length, number of leaf, and leaf size of alfalfa were increased as as result of dual inoculation with Glomus mosseae and Rhizobium meliloti. Total dry weight of alfalfa plant was increased 1.4 times compared to single inoculation with Rhizobium meliloti. Nodule number and mean fresh weight of nodule per plant were also increased due to the mycorrhizal infection.

  • Extraction of old pacemaker leads remains a complex procedure owing to fibrotic encapsulation and lead adhesions. We report a case of extraction of 15-year-old pacemaker leads by weight and pulley method. A 81-year-old man presented with exposed pacemaker leads out of body with purulent discharge from a pacemaker insertion site. He inserted DDD (dual chamber pacing, dual chamber sensing dual function) pacemaker implantation 15 years ago for SSS. Previously pacemaker battery was removed 3 years ago due to recurrent infection of pacemaker scar site. We extracted the pacemaker leads by weight and pulley method successfully without any complications.
