  • This study was conducted to find out if there are some differences in germination, growth and morphological characteristics between rice(Oryza saliva) and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli) under various cropping patterns and to abtain the fundamental information on weed control method in direct seeded rice. Rice was broadcast on soil-surface(Broadcast rice), drill seeded in soil(Drilled rice) and barnyardgrass was drill seeded in soil(Barnyardgrass) under dry(Dry condition) and water direct seeded condition(Water condition). Also rice was transplanted with 8-day seedlings(8 -day-old seedling) and 25-day seedlings(25-*day-old seedling) under transplanting condition(Transplanting condition) At 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 days after seeding or transplanting(DAS/T), plants were harvested to examine their germination, growth and morphology. The major results were as follows ; Until 5 DAS/T growth of rice and barnyardgrass were well established under dry condition but under water condition growth of shoots was mainly elongated. At 20 DAS/T barnyardgrass had greater plant height and shoot fresh weight than rice under direct seeded condition, while plant height and shoot fresh weight of rice was greater than those of barnyardgrass under transplanting condition. Root length of barnyardgrass was greater under the dry, drilled, direct seeded conditions than that of rice under the water, broadcast, transplanting condition, respectively. And root fresh weight of rice under direct seeded condition was similar to that of barnyardgrass but that of rice under transplanting condition was significantly greater than that of barnyardgrass. Barnyardgrass only formed mesocotyls and its length increased with increased depth of seeding. Leaf stage and leaf area of barnyardgrass was greater under the dry, drilled than those of rice under water, broadcast conditions, respectively, while those of rice was greater than those of barnyardgrass under transplanting condition. Chlorophyll contents were higher in barnyardgrass, dry direct seeded rice, transplanted rice, water direct seeded rice in descending order.

  • Differences in need occurrence and competition were investigated among five types of rice(Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. Dry weights of weeds in between transplanting and/or seeding and heading date showed in the decreasing order of dry direct-seeded, flood direct-seeded, machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and conventional hand transplanting. A similar trend was obtained with application of weedy followed by weed-free. Weed-free periods allowed to decrease by 20% dry weight of rice were 3 weeks after transplanting(WAT) in transplanting cultivations, 5 weeks after seeding(WAS) in wet direct-seeded rice, and 7-8 WAS in dry direct-seeded rice. On the other hand, weedy periods as determined by the same criterion were 9 WAT in conventional hand transplanting and machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, 7 WAT in machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling, 8 WAS in dry direct-seeded rice, and 6 WAS in flood direct-seeded rice.

  • The experiment was conducted at Gyeongbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration in 1996 to obtain basic information on weed ecology and effective weed control in direct-seeded rice fields under different seeding types and seeding times. A large number of upland weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria sanguinalis, Capsella bursa-pastoris and Stetaria viridis etc occurred at early growth stage, while Eleocharis kuroguwai, Aneilema keisak and Cyperus serotinus dominated at late stage in dry seeded rice field. In wet seeded rice field, the dominance of E. crus-galli was lower and the occurrence of M. vaginalis and A. keisak were higher than in dry seeded field. Amount of weed occurrence in dry seeded field was 1.8 to 2.4 times greater than in wet seeded field and it increased with delaying seeding time. Increasing rate of weed occurrence through whole life cycle was the highest at 20 days after seeding (DAS) to 40 DAS, regardless of seeding types and seeding times. Simpson index in wet seeded field was higher than in dry seeded field and it gradually increased as growing of dominant species. For F-value test, it was recognized as statistical significant in seeding types, seeding times and interaction of two factors.

  • his study was conducted to Investigate the occurrence of small brown planthopper (SBPH), LaodeIpahx striatellus Fallen, and the ind~cence 01 rice virus diseases by d~fferent seeding dates in dryseeded rice. The occurrerlce of SBPH was the highest an nce seeded in May 11, followed byMay 1, May 21 and May 31. However. SBPH dld not occur on the rice seeded in June 10 duelo the rice was emerged after peak occurrence of first generailon adult of SBPH. The occurrenceof the first generation adult of SBPH was May 11 and it was 3-day earlier than that of infantnce transplanting. The ~nd~cencofe rice vlrus diseases, rice stripe vilus (RSV) and rice black-streakeddwarf virus (RBSDV), was the most severe at seeding date May 11. and then followed by May1, May 21 and May 31 Thus the incidence of "ce virus diseases was closely related with thedensity of the first generat~on adult of SBPH Rice yield was decreased by later seeding dates, although rice yield from May 1 to May 21 was relatively stable and hqii compared with laterseeding dates. • In order to determine the possibility of reducing rice injury caused by CNP and butachlor application, the effects of IAA seed presoaking on CNP and butachlor action against early growth of rice seedlings were investigated under flooded direct-seeding and dry-seeded conditions. CNP and butachlor injury to rice was reduced by soaking rice seeds at 0.1, 1.0 and 10ppm of IAA solution for 36 hours before seeding under flooded condition and thus shoot length and dry weight of rice seedlings increased compared with those of IAA untreated seedlings. IAA seed pretreatment also overcame the inhibitory effect of CNP and butachlor under dry-seeded condition. Effect on reducing rice injury by IAA pretreatment was more remarkable when CNP applied under dry seeded condition and butachlor under flooded condition.

  • Pot experiment in greenhouse was conducted to determine the effect of growth and anatomical characteristics of bensulfuron on the seedlings of rice and barnyardgrass. Formulated bensulfuron was soil applied at 102g ai/ha to rice and barnyardgrass grown under various cropping patterns at 5 days after seeding or transplanting. At 10 days after application, plants were harvested to examine growth and anatomical changes of rice and barnyardgrass. Bensulfuron did not affect the growth and development of rites under dry seeded condition and trnsplanting condition while inhibited severely those of rice under water-seeded condition compared with untreated control. Under water-seeded condition, root growth of rice was much more severely inhibited by bensulfuron than shoot growth. The herbicide retarded the growth of barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition and more severely inhibited than that under water-seeded condition. Microscopically, the anatomical change induced by bensulfuron occurred only in barnyardgrass under dry-seeded condition, and involved constriction of leaf primordia within leaf sheaths, rupture of mesophyll cell, and irregular cell arrangement. These anatomical alterations differed from and were not associated with the differential growth response.

  • A field study was conducted over a 3-year period from 2014 to 2016 in the central plain area, Suwon, Korea, 1) to compare the biomass production between machine-transplanted and water-broadcast seeded silage rice and 2) to elucidate the growth factors that affect the difference in biomass production between the two cultivation practices. The heading date for the water-broadcast seeded silage rice was September 11-18, which was delayed by 11-17 days when compared to that for the machine-transplanted silage rice. On average, water-broadcast seeded silage rice had a shorter plant height, more panicles per area, and a greater biomass production because of the increased straw dry weight. However, the difference in dry weight of each plant organ between the two cultivation practices exhibited yearly variation. When the data were pooled across experimental years, cultivation practices, and varieties, biomass production was highly positively correlated with straw dry weight but not with panicle dry weight. When the ratio of water-broadcast seeding to machine-transplanting was analyzed, total dry weight and straw dry weight were positively associated with each other, whereas no relationship was found between total dry weight and panicle dry weight. Despite that water-broadcast seeded silage rice produced more panicles per area than machine-transplanted silage rice, the two cultivation practices had a similar dry weight per culm. Therefore, we conclude that the silage rice from the water-broadcast seeding, compared to the machine-transplanting, produced more biomass because of the combination of the increased panicle number per area and a similar dry weight per culm. These results suggest that silage rice could be produced through water-broadcast seeding to increase biomass production with low labor and cost input.

  • Field experiment were carried out to elucidate the changes of weed occurrence according to the sowing time and to establish the efficient weed control system in dry seeded rice cultivation. E crus-galli and D. sanguinalis are tow major weeds at the earlier sowings, but C. difformis was dominating at the later sowing. In the case of E. crus-galli, there was a tendency of gaining its dominance values as the rice growth stage advances. The later the sowing time was, the more weeds occurred at the early rice growth stages: However, when measured at heading, total dry weight was greater at the earlier sowings. Yield loss due to weeds were also greater at the earlier sowings. Community diversity of weeds was greater at the later sowings, while specific weed was gradually dominating as rice growth stage advances, regardless of sowing time. When herbicides were applied before 15 DAS, weeds were effectively controlled only upto 35 DAS. So systemic herbicide application, one on 0 to 10 DAS and the other on just after flooding, appeared to be recommendable in direct seeded rice cultivation.

  • Uptake, assimilation and translocation of nitrogen and dry matter assimilation and translocation in ten rice cultivars were observed in no-till direct-sown rice-vetch cropping system. There was a large degree of variation in N-uptake, grain yield, nitrogen translocation efficiency and dry matter assimilation and translocation in tested rice cultivars. Forty kg N/ha base, as compound fertilizer (21-17-21% of N-P-K) three weeks after sowing and 30 kg N/ha top-dressed at panicle initiation stage as in the form of (NH$_4$)$_2$$CO_2$ was applied. ‘Newbounet’, ‘Daesanbyeo’, and ‘Hwayeongbyeo’ showed higher translocation efficiency. The contribution of pre-heading dry matter assimilates to grain ranged from 33% to 99% of dry grain weight. Dry matter of ‘Calrose 76’ was lower than Newbounet but N content was higher in Calrose 76 than Newbonnet. By maturity, N content in vegetative parts declined considerably more than dry matter, vegetative and reproductive parts, N translocation efficiency, and N harvest index. Nitrogen translocation efficiency was greater in ‘Nonganbyeo’, Daesanbyeo, and Newbounet. Grain N concentration was positively correlated with N concentration or N content of the vegetative parts at heading in Nonganbyeo, ‘Dasanbyeo’, ‘Dongjinbyeo’, and Newbonnet. These results indicated that the greater amount of dry matter and N accumulated before heading stage, the higher translocation rates of dry matter to grain and the greater net losses at maturity.
