  • This study was conducted about the various forms of downsizing in small manufacturing firms such as lay-offs, honorary retirement, wage cuts, reduction of assets, merging of organizations with similar functions. Specially the study was conducted among small manufacturing companies to investigate which factors play a role in deciding which method to use. As result, the study found out the form of downsizing varies according to the characteristics of the small manufacturing companies. In other words, it is the size and the growth form of the company which influences the form of downsizing, rather than the management experience of the company. Based on the result of the study, small firms tend to prefer form of downsizing which will have short term or immediate effect, depending on the condition of their organization. Also, this kind of slim down on workforce has positive effect on the management achievement. However, there is also a negative effect on the moral of the members of the organization and the level of concentration in the work field. Therefore, it is better for small manufacturing companies to seek other long term means to increase its' productivity and renovation in management, and avoid method which will have direct effect on the moral of the members.

  • This study is to examine the effects of high commitment HRM on service performance in the service industry, and to examine the mediating effect of the organizational internal innovation direction. Specifically, the direction of internal innovation consists of high-value-added HR and service and cost-reduction downsizing. We assumed that the high-value-added direction of HR and service will have a positive mediating effect. And assumed that cost-reduction downsizing direction has negative mediating effect. The data were collected from 2013 workplace panel survey(WPS) of the Korea Labor Institute(KLI). Among the 1,775 companies, 896 companies classified as wholesale and retail, transportation, professional scientific services, education services, health social services, financial services, and other services (such as information society support services) were extracted and used. In summary, high-commitment HRM has a positively significant effect on the direction of high value-added innovation of HR and services, and has a negatively significant effect on the cost-reduction downsizing direction. In addition, the direction of high value-added innovation of HR and service was positive effect on service performance, and cost-reduction downsizing innovation direction has a negative effect on service performance. And the direct effect of high commitment HRM on service performance has not been confirmed. However, we confirmed the positive mediating effect of high value-added innovation direction of HR and services, and confirmed that the negative mediating effect of cost-reduction downsizing. Therefore, it is confirmed that the two variables have a full mediating effect on the relationship between high commitment HRM and service performance.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 risk perception on the operational activities and performance of incubator tenant companies during the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. The primary variables considered for the operational activities of incubator tenant companies include financial management, research and development, marketing, and downsizing. Financial and non-financial performance are the key variables for business performance. The research findings indicate that COVID-19 risk perception has a significant impact only on downsizing, but it does not significantly affect financial management, research and development, or marketing. Additionally, COVID-19 risk perception has a significantly negative impact on both financial and non-financial performance. Financial management and marketing significantly influence financial performance, while research and development and downsizing do not seem to have a significant impact on financial performance. Conversely, research and development, as well as marketing activities, significantly impact non-financial performance, while financial management and downsizing lack a significant influence on non-financial performance. Finally, when examining incubator tenant companies categorized into early-stage, leap-stage, and growth-stage companies, it was observed that only marketing activities have a common and significant impact on non-financial performance across all three types of companies.

  • Diesel and gasoline engines will be used as main power system of automobiles. Recently, engine downsizing is widely applied to both gasoline and diesel engines in order to improve fuel economy and exhaust emissions. Engine downsizing means small engine combustion chamber with higher combustion pressure. Therefore, spray and combustion process should be investigated under these high pressure and temperature conditions. In this study, constant volume combustion chamber which enables easy optical access from six directions was developed. Combustion chamber was designed to resist maximum pressure of 15 MPa and maximum temperature of 2,000 K. Combustible pre-mixed mixture was introduced into combustion chamber and ignited by spark plugs. High pressure and temperature were implemented by combustion of pre-mixed mixture. Three initial conditions of different pressure and density were tested. High repeatability of combustion process was implemented which was proven by low standard deviation of combustion pressure.

  • The influencing factors of large-scale IT investment decisions are rarely investigated in an empirical perspective. We find out different behaviors in IT investment decisions according to the size of organization. Large scale IT-investment decisions (e.g. system downsizing) can be the outcome of decision-makers' motivation to adopt and control new IT systems- However, this phenomenon is salient in the large-sized organization rather than small-sized ones. Based on our investigation, we predict general IT decision-making behaviors in organizations when making IT investment decisions.
