This experiment was carried out for the improvement of drying schedules for 50 mm-thick Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) lumber. Drying rates were analyzed comparatively after drying to 15% of final moisture content through the applications of conventional kiln drying schedule, time schedule, continuously rising temperature schedule, and drying rate schedule. As results drying rate of 50 mm-thick red pine lumber was 0.53%/hr with conventional kiln drying schedule, 0.9%/hr with time schedule, 2.29%/hr with continuously rising temperature schedule, and 1.52%/hr with drying rate schedule, respectively.
Plywood is one of the important materials in LNG cargo containment systems, and, due to the characteristics of the wood, its properties vary greatly depending on the humidity conditions in the storage facility. Due to the distribution environment of plywood, there is a high probability of long-term exposure to the domestic seasonal environment. Considering an environment in which the humidity changes greatly according to the seasons in Korea and the characteristics of the wood, it is necessary to acquire data on changes in the characteristics of the plywood for accurate quality control. In this study, the moisture content of plywood was determined experimentally to reflect the seasonal environmental conditions of shipyards in Korea. A noticeable change in the thermal conductivity was confirmed experimentally.
Currently, the global furniture market can not overlook environmental problems due to changes in environmental regulations. In order to grow into a global corporation, environmentally friendly design became essential. In addition, domestic and foreign consumers are increasingly interested in and spending on children's furniture, and demand for environment - friendly furniture for children's health and emotional development is increasing. In the era of universal consumer tastes due to massive mass production, it has been changed into a multi-product small-volume production period that reflects the preferences of various consumers, so that various types of furniture that meet individual preferences are required. Therefore, in this study, we investigated various personal opinions, perception, preference, propensity to use furniture, purchasing points, etc. for environmentally friendly children's furniture, and provided basic data for environmentally friendly children's furniture development that reflects consumer preference and requirements. Accordingly, 243 parents who have more than one child living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon were surveyed about the use of children's furniture and the perception and preference of environmentally friendly children's furniture. According to the survey results, 64.57% of the respondents knew about eco - friendly children's furniture and the most popular way to get to know eco-friendly furniture was Internet advertising (49.48%). The rate of recognizing eco-friendly furniture as healthy furniture with no emission of hazardous substances was high as 56.16%. The purchase intention of eco-friendly children's furniture was very high at 86.01% and the most important factor in purchasing was the harmlessness to the human body (56.88%). 59.50% said that it is not possible to distinguish environmentally friendly furniture, which means that there is not much information to consumers yet. In addition, the preferred price range is 500~1000 thousand won, and the preference for the rest furniture is high. In the preferred form type, unit type modular furniture is 36.13%, in the material, wood is 72.35%, in the color, the color of wood with wood grain is high as 45.56%.
Three heat-treatment schedules were applied to $90{\times}90mm$ dimension square lumber of Pinus koraiensis, one of major domestic species, and their colors and physical properties were investigated for obtaining an optimum schedule. Each square lumber was heat-treated three times. The temperatures of $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$, and the time of 9 hours and 13 hours were used for the first heat-treatment. The schedule of $190^{\circ}C$ and 7 hours were used for the next two heat-treatments. The averages of brightness $L^*$ decreased linearly as the heat-treatment repeated and its standard deviations also decreased slightly. While the averages of color difference ${\Delta}E^*$ increased linearly as the heat-treatment repeated and its standard deviations also increased slightly. The average compressive strength of the heat-treated specimen was higher than that of the control by 9%, which deviates from previous reports. ASE and WPG of the heat-treated specimens were measured to confirm that heat-treatment improved dimensional stability significantly.
It is necessary to review the non-destructive indexes in order to estimate the bending strength performance of the domestic larch lumber. In this study, MOEs (modulus of elastic) the larch lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) were evaluated through non-destructive methods such as the ultra-sonic method, longitudinal vibration method, and non-destructive bending method. The non-destructive measurement method which best represented the static MOE was determined and applied as the MOR(modulus of rupture) estimation index. The MOE that was measured through the longitudinal vibration method showed the highest correlation with the static MOE. The MOR was highly related to the static MOE. Therefore, the non-destruction MOE measured through the longitudinal vibration method was used to estimate the MOR of the lumber.
In this study, the bending behavior of cross-laminated timber (CLT) connected by nails were investigated. Especially, the load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT under out-of-plane bending was predicted by the lateral resistance of the used nails. Three-layer nail-jointed CLT specimens and a nail connection were manufactured by 30 mm (thickness) ${\times}$ 100 mm (width) domestic species (Pinus koraiensis) laminas and Ø$3.15{\times}82mm$ nails using a nail-gun. Shear test for evaluating the nail lateral resistance and bending test for evaluating the load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT under out-of-plane bending were carried out. As a result, two lateral resistance of the used nail, the 5% fastener offset value and the maximum value, were 913 N and 1,534 N, respectively. The predicted load-carrying capacity of the nail-jointed CLT by the 5% offset nail lateral resistance was similar to the yield points on the actual load-displacement curve of the nail-jointed CLT specimens. Meanwhile, the nail-jointed CLT specimens were not failed until the tension failure of the bottom laminas occurred beyond the maximum lateral resistance of the nails. Thus, the measured maximum load carrying capacities of the nail-jointed CLT specimens, approximately 12,865 N, were higher than the predicted values, 7,986 N, by the maximum nail lateral resistance. This indicates that the predicted load-carrying capacity can be used for designing a structural unit such as floor, wall and roof able to support vertical loads in a viewpoint of predicting the actual capacities more safely.
The low melting alloy impregnated wood composites with natural grain of thinned Juglans mandshurica was made and evaluated in this study. And the proper manufacturing conditions was also investigated in this study. The low melting alloy with bismuth(Bi) and tin(Sn) which are harmless to humans, was applied for this novel composites, which showed not only no defects of discoloration, delamination, swelling, and cracking, because of high dimensional stability and low thickness swelling, but also much improved performance such as high bending strength, high hardness, low abrasion, high thermal conductivity as floor materials. This study also suggested the proper impregnating condition, such as 10 minutes of the preliminary vacuum time, $187^{\circ}C$ of the heating temperature and 10 minutes of the maintaining pressure time at the pressure of 30kgf/$cm^2$. The produced composites showed 9 times higher density for small specimen, 6.6 times for actual size sample and great increase in bending strength from 102.05N/$mm^2$ to 189.47N/$mm^2$ for small size sample and to 205.4N/$mm^2$ for actual size sample, also great increase in hardness from 15.1N/$mm^2$ to 73.38N/$mm^2$ for small size sample and 64.87N/$mm^2$ for actual size sample. And the composites demonstrated great decrease in abrasion depth and in water absorption.
The polymerization rates of monomer or monomer mixture impregnated with catalyst into domestic soft woods such as pinus densiflora, pinus rigida and poplus deltoides e. t. c. were measured. The results were compared with those obtained by radiation curing method and the following conclusions were derived ; (1) Pinus densiflora and pinus rigida are superior to the poplus deltoides, and methyl methacrylate(M. M. A. ) is more effective than other monomers as far as the polymerization rates are only taken into account. (2) The polymerization rate of vinyl acetate is generally slow. And the polymerization rate of the monomer is the slowest in case of being impregnated into poplus deltoides. However, the polymerization rate of the comonomer composed of vinylacetate and M. M. A. is the fastest among the other monomers or monomer mixtures in woods regardless of the curing method. (3) The general trend of polymerization of monomer in wood is similar to that of monomers themselves in both curing methods if the woods contain not much resin.
In this study, the extinguishing performance evaluation of wetting agent for wood crib was conducted by using a scale model equipment that we designed. To confirm the optimal conditions of the experiment, a test was changed amount of fire extinguishing water and the number of timber. As a result, the discrimination of the fire extinguishing performance was seen only when 20 pieces of wood and the extinguishing water of 100 mL were used. After evaluating the extinguishing performance of domestic and foreign wetting extinguishing agents under these conditions, a reignition was occurred in only when we used water. In addition, the discrimination of extinguishing performance was seen through the temperature distribution according to the time of watering. Based on the results of this experiment, this study is expected to be able to use as a basis on presenting a method of optimized performance evaluation of wetting extinguishing agent.
