  • The cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) contamination of soils and cultivated crop plants by zinc smelting activities was studied. In the study area of the vicinity of ${\triangle}{\triangle}$ zinc smelting factory in Korea, soils and corn plants were sampled at corn harvesting stage and analyzed Cd and Zn concentration as well as Cd and Zn fraction and chemical properties in soils. At 600 m radius of studied area, Cd and Zn were highly accumulated in the surface soils (0 - 20 cm) showed greater than the Korean warning criteria (Cd 1.5, Zn 300 mg $kg^{-1}$) with corresponding values 1.7 and 407 mg $kg^{-1}$, respectively. The leaf part gave higher Cd concentration with the corresponding value of 9.5 mg $kg^{-1}$ as compared to the stem and grains pare (1.6 and 0.18 mg $kg^{-1}$), respectively. Higher Zn concentration was also obtained from the leaf part of the corn plant which gave the value of 1,733 mg $kg^{-1}$. The stem and grain part gave corresponding values of 547 and 61 mg $kg^{-1}$. The order of the mean Cd concentration in fractions is F3 (oxidizable fraction) > F2 (reducible fraction) > F4 (residual fraction) > F1 (exchangeable + acidic fraction). A highly positive correlation is observed between F2 and concentration of Cd and Zn in both plant pare, leaf and grain. Highly positive correlations are shown in the pH exchangeable Ca and Mg, and CEC when correlated with Cd and Zn bound to F4 fractions. To reduce Cd and Zn uptake by corn plant in an arable land heavily contaminated with Cd and Zn as affected by smelting factory, an efficient and effective soil management to increase soil pH and CEC is thus recommended.

  • This study analyzed in what ways the instructional materials have been dealing with the fraction as quotient, since the seventh national mathematics curriculum. An analysis of this study urged us to re-consider the content related to the fraction as quotient. First, the fraction as quotient has weakened in the current mathematics textbooks and workbooks in comparison to those developed under the previous curriculum. Second, the contexts of whole number division taught in grades 3 and 4 were not naturally connected to those of the fraction as quotient taught in grade 5. Third, the types of word problems, visual models, and partitioning strategies in the textbooks and the workbooks were partial, and the process of formalization was limited. Building on these results, this study is expected to suggest specific implications which may be taken into account in developing new instructional materials in process.

  • The effects of pH, types of applied current, agitation method and time, additive on the amount of co-deposited $TiO_2$ particles in the matrix were investigated. The deposition rates increased with increasing pH values, while the volume fraction of $TiO_2$ particles and the size of agglomerated $TiO_2$ particles in the composite decreased. The volume fraction of $TiO_2$ particles in the composite decreased when pulsed current of 50% duty cycle was used. And the size of agglomerated $TiO_2$ particles in the nickel matrix of pulsed current was smaller than that of DC current specimen. The volume fraction of $TiO_2$ particles in the matrix decreased with longer time by air agitation, but in case of using magnetic bar, volume fraction in the same range of time was relatively constant. The volume fraction of the electrodeposited Ni-$TiO_2$ composite in the solution containing 0.01 M Dimethylamine borane (DMAB) increased slightly with increasing agitation time regardless of agitation methods. Thermal stability of the electrodeposited Ni-$TiO_2$ composite increased with lower pH at the temperature range of $200{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, and the results showed that the amount of co-deposited $TiO_2$ relies more on the deposition rate than zetapotential of $TiO_2$ particles.

  • Objectives: Dyslipidemia in diabetes mellitus is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the ethyl-acetate fraction of an ethanolic extract from Streospermum suaveolens on lipid metabolism in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Diabetes was induced by intraperitonial injection of STZ (50 mg/kg). Diabetic rats were treated with an ethyl-acetate fraction orally at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg daily for 14 days. On the $15^{th}$ day, serum lipid profiles, such as total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL), were estimated in experimental rats. The atherogenic (AI) and the coronary risk (CRI) indices were also evaluated. Results: The ethyl-acetate fraction at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg significantly (P < 0.001) and dose-dependently reduced serum cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL, but increased HDL towards near normal levels as compared to diabetic control rats. The fraction also significantly (P < 0.001) lowered the atherogenic index (AI) and coronary risk index (CAI) in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the ethyl-acetate fraction of Stereospermum suaveolens exhibits a potent antihyperlipidemic activity in hyperglycemic rats and suggests that the plant may have therapeutic value in treating the diabetic complication of hyperlipidemia.

  • As the importance of algebraic thinking in elementary school has been emphasized, the links between fraction knowledge and algebraic thinking have been highlighted. In this study, we analyzed the solution methods and characteristics of thinking by fifth graders who have not yet learned fraction division when they solved 'reverse fraction problems' (Pearn & Stephens, 2018). In doing so, the contexts of problems were extended from the prior study to include the following cases: (a) the partial quantity with a natural number is discrete or continuous; (b) the partial quantity is a natural number or a fraction; (c) the equivalent fraction of partial quantity is a proper fraction or an improper fraction; and (d) the diagram is presented or not. The analytic framework was elaborated to look closely at students' solution methods according to the different contexts of problems. The most prevalent method students used was a multiplicative method by which students divided the partial quantity by the numerator of the given fraction and then multiplied it by the denominator. Some students were able to use a multiplicative method regardless of the given problem contexts. The results of this study showed that students were able to understand equivalence, transform using equivalence, and use generalizable methods. This study is expected to highlight the close connection between fraction and algebraic thinking, and to suggest implications for developing algebraic thinking when to deal with fraction operations.

  • In this paper we suggest the methods that compute the total inventory cost based on EOQ and the total inventory cost based on OMMIP. The total inventory cost consists of purchasing cost, ordering cost, inventory holding cost, stockout cost and so on. This papers also proposes the method that decides optimum order quantity as the order amount to minimize the total inventory cost with comparison of EOQ total inventory cost and OMMIP total inventory cost according to inventory holding cost as a fraction of unit cost.

  • Both wild peony and cultivated peony demonstrated a slight effect and tranquilizer of anti-convulsion on the strychinine and picrotoxine but the wild plant was more effective. The methanol extract of cultivated peony root demonstrated a weak effect of muscle loosening but its mixture with water extractable fraction did not have this effect in contrast to the case wild type whose methanol extract mixture with water extractable fraction still retained a strong anti-convulsional muscle loosening effect. Therefore, it is concluded that wild peony root has more analgesic and muscle loosening effect than the cultivated counterpart has.

  • In case of analyzing PAHs (EPA 16 compounds) in oil-contaminated soils, the lump of peaks may occur because of the aliphatic and polar compounds in oil. This phenomenon is due to the lower accuracy of the analysis. To solve this problem, evaluation of application of silicagel-alumina multi-layer fraction was performed using standard substances and oil-contaminated soils. As a result of application of silicagel-alumina multi-layer fraction cleanup method using standard substances, recovery rates of surrogate standards (5 compounds including Naphthalene-d8) were 83~100% and those of target standards were 75~129%. These were to meet the target values (60~130%) in this study. When used 4% water-silicagel column analyze PAHs in oil-contaminated soils, Some problems were generated for quantitative analysis of PAHs; concentration of PAHs was underestimated due to an upward baseline of internal standard (recovery rate: less than 60%) and overestimated by the lump of peaks which were not purified (the biggest recovery rate: more than 400%). On the other hand, in case of silicagel-alumina multi-layer fraction cleanup method, recovery rate of surrogate standards were 61~101.6%. Therefore this cleanup method was considered a valid method to improve accuracy of analysis of PAHs in oil-contaminated soils.
