  • This paper discusses the lateral behavior of group pile in homogeneous and non- homogeneous (two layered) soil. In the group pile, the model tests were to investigate the effects on spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, pile array, ratio of pile spacing, constraint condition of pile tip, eccentric load and ground condition. The group efficiency and lateral deflection induced in active piles were found to be highly dependent on the spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, number of pile. Lateral bearing capacities in the group piles of fixed tip, in the case of 6D spacing and $3\times3$ array, were 40-100% higher than those in the group pile of free tip. Based on the results obtained, a spacing-to-diameter of 6.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect for the case of relative density of 61.8% and 32.8%, and then each pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile. However, in the case of dense sand, it can be estimated that a spacing-to-diameter of 8.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect. In this study the group efficiency is illustrated in experimental function with spacing-to-diameter, S/D, relative density and number of pile. The distribution of shear force in lead row piles, in the case of 3$\times$3 array group pile, was 41.6-52.4% for 3D spacing and 34-40% for 6D spacing, respectively. The shadowing effect for the parallel direction of lateral loading appears to be more significant than the one for the perpendicular direction of lateral loading.

  • The study investigates the necessity of 3 dimensional dose distribution evaluation instead of point dose and 2 dimensional dose distribution evaluation. Treatment plans were generated on the RANDO phantom to measure the precise dose distribution of the treatment site 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 cm with the prescribed dose; 1,200 cGy, 5 fractions. Gamma analysis (3%/3 mm, 2%/2 mm) of dose distribution was evaluated with gafchromic EBT2 film and ArcCHECK phantom. The average error of absolute dose was measured at $0.76{\pm}0.59%$ and $1.37{\pm}0.76%$ in cheese phantom and ArcCHECK phantom respectively. The average passing ratio for 3%/3 mm were $97.72{\pm}0.02%$ and $99.26{\pm}0.01%$ in gafchromic EBT2 film and ArcCHECK phantom respectively. The average passing ratio for 2%/2 mm were $94.21{\pm}0.02%$ and $93.02{\pm}0.01%$ in gafchromic EBT2 film and ArcCHECK phantom respectively. There was a more accurate dose distribution of 3D volume phantom than cheese phantom in patients DQA using tomotherapy. Therefor it should be evaluated simultaneously 3 dimensional dose evaluation on target and peripheral area in rotational radiotherapy such as tomotherapy.

  • The effect of aspect ratio on the flow characteristics of elliptic jets was experimentally investigated. The flow characteristics of sharp-edged elliptic nozzles with aspect ratio of 1 (round nozzle), 2 and 4 were measured by using a 3-D LDV system along the major and minor axis at X/De = 2, 3, 5, 7 and along the centerline up to X/De = 14. At each measurement point mean velocites, turbulent intensities, skewness of three orthogonal velocity components, and Reynolds shear stress were obtained. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle exit velocity and nozzle equivalent diameter(De) was about 4 * 10$^{4}$. Difference in the spreading rate along the major and minor axis was remarkable. The jet half width along the major axis decreased at first and then increased again with going downstream. But the jet width along the minor axis increased steadly. The elliptic jet of AR = 2 had two switching points within the measurement range, while that of AR = 4 had only one. (AAA) : The elliptic jet of AR = 2 showed larger velocity decay rate than that of AR = 1 and AR = 4. The effect of aspect ratio on the flow characteristics of elliptic jets was dominant in the near jet regions of X/De < 7, and the skewness and Reynolds shear stress had quite different distribution depending on the aspect ratio of the elliptic nozzle.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of swirl, injection pressure and pilot injection on D.I. diesel combustion by using a transparent engine system. The test engine is equipped with common rail injection system to obtain high pressure and to control injection timing and duration. In this study, the combustion analysis and steady flow test were conducted to estimate the heat release rate from in-cylinder pressure. Soot distribution in diffusion flame according to swirl ratio, injection pressure and pilot injection was investigated by using LII technique. As the results, high injection pressure was found to shorten ignition delay as well as enhance peak pressure and heat release rate was greatly affected by injection timing and pilot injection. In addition, the results showed that the period of soot formation corresponded to the diffusion flame.

  • In this paper, the electron transport characteristic in CF$_4$has been analysed over the E/N range 1~300(Td) by a two-term approximation Boltzmann equation method and by a Monte Carlo simulation. The alteration of cross sections from the literature is avoided as much as possible in the analysis. The motion has been calculated to give swarm parameters for the electron drift velocity(W), diffusion coefficient(D$_{L}$), the ratio of the diffusion coefficient to the mobility(D$_{L}$/$\mu$), mean energy($\varepsilon$), the electron energy distribution function. The electron energy distribution function has been analysed in CF$_4$at E/N=50, 100 and 200(Td) for a case of the equilibrium region in the mean electron energy. The results of Boltzmann equation and Monte Carlo simulation have been compared with experimental data by Y. Nakamura and M. Hayashi.shi.

  • To measure the traffic pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions, a mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed. The equipment of the mini-van provides gas phase measurements of CO, NOx, CO2 and THC (Total hydrocarbon), and number density & size distribution measurements of fine and ultra-fine particles by a fast mobility particle sizer (FMPS) and a condensation particle counter (CPC). The inlet sampling port above the bumper enables the chasing of different type of vehicles. This paper introduces the technical details of the MEL and presents data from the experiment in which a MEL chases a city bus fuelled by diesel, DME and Bio-diesel. The dilution ratio was calculated by the ratio of ambient NOx and tail-pipe NOx. Most particles from the bus fuelled by diesel were counted under 300 nm and the peak concentration of the particles was located between 30 and 60 nm. However, most particles in the exhaust of the bus fuelled by DME were nano-particles (diameter: less than 50 nm). The bus fuelled by Bio-diesel shows less particle emissions compare to diesel bus due to the presence of the oxygen in the fuel.

Most particles from the diesel bus were counted under 300 nm and the peak concentration of the particles was located between 30 and 60 nm. The total PM number emission from diesel bus equipped with DPF was 10 orders of magnitude lower compared to those emitted from base diesel bus. And the total PM number emission from diesel bus equipped with SCR was comparable to the particle emission from base diesel bus.

  • In this paper, the static behavior of bi-directional functionally graded (FG) non-uniform thickness circular plate resting on quadratically gradient elastic foundations (Winkler-Pasternak type) subjected to axisymmetric transverse and in-plane shear loads is carried out by using state-space and differential quadrature methods. The governing state equations are derived based on 3D theory of elasticity, and assuming the material properties of the plate except the Poisson's ratio varies continuously throughout the thickness and radius directions in accordance with the exponential and power law distributions. The stresses and displacements distribution are obtained by solving state equations. The effects of foundation stiffnesses, material heterogeneity indices, geometric parameters and loads ratio on the deformation and stress distributions of the FG circular plate are investigated in numerical examples. The results are reported for the first time and the new results can be used as a benchmark solution for future researches.

  • We propose a filter-free wavelength conversion using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with monolithically integrated $2{\times}2$ multimode interference semiconductor optical amplifiers (MMI-SOAs). The device has been optimized by considering a non-homogeneous carrier distribution due to the self-imaging properties of the MMI-SOA. Static measurements show an extinction ratio of up to 18 dB and an input signal rejection ratio of up to 20 dB.

  • For the mechanical stability assessment of a deep underground high-level waste repository. computer simulations using FLAC3D were carried out and important parameters including stress ratio, depth, tunnel size, joint spacing, and joint properties were chosen from sensitivity analysis. The main effect as well as the interaction effect between the important parameters could be investigated effectively using fractional factorial design . In order to analyze the stability of the disposal tunnel and deposition hole in a discontinuous rock mass, different modelings were performed under different conditions using 3DEC and the influence of joint distribution and properties, rock properties and stress ratio could be determined. From the three dimensional modelings, it was concluded that the conceptual repository design was mechanically stable even in a discontinuous rock mass.
