  • The strain holding test(SHT) or the sell-boring pressuremeter test(SBPT) has been effectively utilized to determine the horizontal coefficient of consolidation$(c_h)$ of clayey soils. However, a commonly used procedure proposed by Clarke et al.(1979) can lead to an erroneous estimation of $(c_h)$ because of its simplified assumptions. This paper deals with numerical analyses based on realistic test conditions of the generally accepted testing procedure, and .using the most commonly used type of pressuremeter. The effects of pressuremeter geometry, partial drainage during cavity expansion, and the cavity strain level for the holding test are investigated with the radial distributions of the initial excess pore pressure and their dissipation rate. Based on the results of the numerical analyses, the curve of the time factor for the 50% degree of consolidation($T_{50}$) needed to estimate $(c_h)$ is proposed. Comparisons are made between $(c_h)$ values estimated from the SHT or the SBPT and those obtained from other in situ and laboratory tests performed at two sites in Korea. These results suggest the improved capability of the $T_{50}$ curve proposed herein.

  • Using a reference slurry, ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS), an anionic and environmentally friendly surfactant, was investigated as an alternative to BTA for its inhibition and lubrication characteristics. Results demonstrated that the inhibition efficiency of ADS was superior to that of BTA. Coefficient of friction (COF) was the lowest when the slurry contained ADS. This suggested that adsorbed ADS on the surface provided lubricating action thereby reducing the wear between the contacting surfaces. Temperature results were consistent with the COF and removal rate data. ADS showed the lowest temperature rise again confirming the softening effect of the adsorbed surfactant layer and less energy dissipation due to friction. Spectral analysis of shear force showed that increasing the pad-wafer sliding velocity at constant wafer pressure shifted the high frequency spectral peaks to lower frequencies while increasing the variance of the frictional force. Addition of ADS reduced the fluctuating component of the shear force and the extent of the pre-existing stick-slip phenomena caused by the kinematics of the process and collision event between pad asperities with the wafer. By contrast, in the case of BTA, there were no such observed benefits but instead undesirable effects were seen at some polishing conditions. This work underscored the importance of real-time force spectroscopy in elucidating the adsorption, lubrication and inhibition of additives in slurries in CMP.

  • This paper discusses the analysis of the curl deformation behavior when a dynamic force is applied to a tearing tube installed on a flat die to predict the energy absorption capacity and deformation behavior. The deformation of the tips of the curling strips was obtained when the curl tips and tube body are in contact with each other, and a formula describing the energy dissipation rate caused by the deformation of the curl tips is proposed. To improve this formula, we focused on the variation of the curl radius and the reduced thickness of the tube. A formula describing the mean curl radius is proposed and verified using the curl radius measurement data of collision test specimens. These improved formulas are added to the theoretical model previously proposed by Huang et al. and verified from the collision test results of a tearing tube.

  • S-benzyl-cysteine (SBC) is a structural analog of S-allylcysteine (SAC), which is one of the major water-soluble compounds in aged garlic extract. In this study, anticancer activities and the underlying mechanisms of SBC action were investigated and compared these with those of SAC using human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells. SBC significantly suppressed the survival rate of SGC-7901 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, and the inhibitory activities of SBC were stronger than those of SAC. Flow cytometry revealed that SBC induced G2-phase arrest and apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells. Typical apoptotic morphological changes were observed by Hoechst 33258 dye assay. SBC-treatment dramatically induced the dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}m$), and enhanced the enzymatic activities of caspase-9 and caspase-3 whilst hardly affecting caspase-8 activity. Furthermore, Western blotting indicated that SBC-induced apoptosis was accompanied by up-regulation of the expression of p53, Bax and the down-regulation of Bcl-2. Taken together, this study suggested that SBC exerts cytotoxic activity involving activation of mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis through p53 and Bax/Bcl-2 pathways in human gastric cancer SGC-7901 cells.

  • This paper describes a 10-bit 210MHz CMOS current-mode Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) consisting of 6 bit MSB current cell matrix Sub-DAC, 2 bit mSB unary current source Sub-DAC, and 2 bit LSB binary weighting Sub-DAC for Wireless LAN application. A new deglitch circuit is proposed to control a crossing point of signals and minimize a glitch energy. The proposed 10-bit CMOS current mode DAC was designed by a $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS double-poly four-metal technology rate of 210MHz, DNL/INL of ${\pm}0.7LSB/{\pm}1.1LSB$, a glitch energy of $76pV{\cdot}sec$, a SNR of 50dB, a SFDR of 53dB at 200MHz sampling clock and power dissipation of 83mW at 3.3V

  • Conventional aseismic design methods of R/C frame all but disregard the state of damage over the entire building frame. This paper presents an automated damage-controlled design method for R/C frames which aims at an uniform energy dissipation rate throughout the building frame, so that the resulting damage is uniformly distributed as much as possible over all element. The accuracy of the basic hystertic model and the damage model for R/C members is verified by reproducing the experimental load-deformation curves of one-bay one-story frames. Application of this design method to various frame structures indicate that 1) regardless of the structural properties or input earthquake characteristics, damage-controlled frames generally survive more severe earthquake excitations and suffer less damage than conventionally designed frames, and 2) member yielding strength in the lower stories of damage-controlled frames is larger than that for conventionally designed frames, while the trend is opposite in the upper stories.

  • The capacity concept presented in the Highway Capacity Manual is for steady-state traffic flow assuming that there is no restriction in downstream flowing, which is traditionally used for planning, design, and operational analyses. In the congested traffic condition, the control objective should be to keep the congested regime from growing and to recover the normal traffic condition as soon as possible. In this control case, it is important to predict the spatial-temporal pattern of congestion evolution or dissipation and to estimate the throughput reduction according to the spatial-temporal pattern. In this context, the new concept of dynamic capacity for managing congested traffic is developed in terms of spatial-temporal evolution of downstream traffic congestion and in view of the 'input' concept assuming that flow is restricted by downstream condition rather than the 'output' concept assuming that there is no restriction in downstream flowing (e.g. the mean queue discharge flow rate). This new capacity is defined as the Maximum Sustainable Throughput that is determined based on the spatial-temporal evolution pattern of downstream congestion. And the spatial-temporal evolution pattern is estimated using the Newell's simplified q-k model.

  • One-Dimensional Nonlinear Consolidation Model(NCM) ivas developed by using an Extended Power Function Model, which could represent the compressibility of soils. A nonlinear finite element program for NCM was developed to analyze the porewater pressure dissipation and the settlement of saturated soils. Parameters used in compressibility model could be easily obtained from conventional oedometer test data. This model has been applied to Yansan-Mulgum area for the comparison with the results of CONSOL program and that of Terzaghi theory. A Good The rates of consolidation predicted by this model and CONSOL were faster than that of conventional Tergaghi theory, for they consider the nonlinear characteristics of soils. Consolidation curves of this model were located between Terzaghi and CONSOL curves. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary, where effective stress valied rapidly, seemed to reflect the variations of compressibility of sails. Consolidation curves near drainage boundary obtained from this model were composed of two parabolic curves. Intersection of the parabolic curves occurred when effective stress reached the value of preconsolidation stress. Moreover, thin model could be used to represent the effect of magnitude of applied load. whereas CONSOL and Terazghi theory could not.

  • Physiological reactions of 24 six months old (22.7 kg. body weight) Barki ram lambs, to hot summer conditions, as influenced by asbestos shading at Maryout area were studied. Animals (12 shaded and 12 Unshaded) developed hyperthermia during summer as their rectal temperature (RT) and respiration rate (RR) were always higher (p<0.01) than normal. Asbestos shading caused higher (p<0.05) RT and RR ($39.5^{\circ}C$ and 69.9 r.p.m. vs. 39.2 and 45.7 r.p.m.) of rams at morning (6-8 a.m.) which became lower ($39.9^{\circ}C$ and 104.3 r.p.m. vs. $40.1^{\circ}C$ and 120.5 r.p.m.) in afternoon (2-4 p.m.) as compared to sun exposure. Shading also resulted in higher hematocrit value (PCV) (35.3% vs. 33.0%) and lower (p<0.05) daily weight gain (128.57 vs. 131.43 g). Diurnal (p<0.01) and monthly (p<0.05) RT and RR changes were closely associated with air temperature (AT) fluctuations. Monthly variation (p<0.05) in PCV was evident. Puberty was reached one month later in the shaded as compared to the unshaded group (265 vs. 232.3 day, respectively). It is concluded that asbestos shading prevents efficient heat dissipation to the sky by hyperthermic rams during summer nights. Construction materials for animal shelters are of extreme practical importance.

  • The paper proposes the 6bit 800MS/s flash A/D converter that can be applied to wireless USB chip-set. The paper simplified the error correction circuit and synchronization block as one circuit which are used respectively, and furthermore reduced the burden on the hardware. Comparing to the conventional error correction circuit, the proposed error correction circuit in this paper reduced 5 MOS transistors, the area of each error correction circuit is reduced by 9%. The A/D converter is fabricated with 0.18um CMOS 1-poly 6-metal process, and power dissipation is 182mW at 0.8Vpp input range and 1.8V supply voltage. The measured result shows 4.0bit of ENOB at 800MS/s conversion rate and 128.1MHz input frequency.
