A nonlinear dynamic response structural optimization process is proposed for the television (TV) packing system that protects the damage from a drop situation using the equivalent static loads (ESLs). Topology optimization using ESLs is carried out for conceptual design, and shape optimization using stress ESLs for a virtual model is performed for detailed design. Stress ESLs are static loads that generate the same displacement as well as the stress fields of linear static analysis as those of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Thus, the response of nonlinear dynamic analysis can be utilized as a constraint in the linear static structural optimization. An actual example is solved to validate the process. The drop test of a television packaging system is analyzed by LS-DYNA, and NASTRAN is used for optimization.

Depth calculation of objects in a scene from images is one of the most studied processes in the fields of image processing, computer vision, and photogrammetry. Conventionally, depth is calculated using a pair of overlapped images captured at different view points. However, there have been studies to calculate depths from a single image. Theoretically, it is known to be possible to calculate depth using the diameter of CoC (Circle of Confusion) caused by defocus under the assumption of a thin lens model. Thus, this study aims to verify the validity of the thin lens model to calculate depth from edge blur amount which corresponds to the radius of CoC. For this study, a commercially available DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera was used to capture a set of target sheets which had different edge contrasts. In order to find out the pattern of the variations of edge blur against varying combination of FD (Focusing Distance) and OD (Object Distance), the camera was set to varying FD and target sheet images were captured at varying OD under each FD. Then, the edge blur and edge displacement were estimated from edge slope profiles using a brute-force method. The experimental results show that the pattern of the variations of edge blur observed in the target images was apart from their corresponding theoretical amounts derived under the thin lens assumption but can still be utilized to calculate depth from a single image for the cases similar to the limited conditions experimented under which the tendency between FD and OD is manifest.

Glass/resin/glass laminate structures are used in the automobile, biological, and display industries. The sandwich structures are used in the micro/nanoimprint process to fabricate a variety of functional components and devices in fields such as display, optics, MEMS, and bioindustry. In the process, micrometer- or nanometer-scale patterns are transferred onto the substrate using UV curing resins. The demodling process has an important impact on productivity. In this study, we investigated the fracture behavior of glass/resin/glass laminates fabricated via UV curing. We performed measurements of the adhesion force and the interfacial energy between the mold and resin materials using the four-point flexural test. The bending-test measurements and the load-displacement curves of the laminates indicate that the fracture behavior is influenced by the interfacial energy between the mold and resin and the resin thickness.

Effects of fiber-matrix interphases on the micro-and macro-mechanical behaviors of unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites subjected to transverse shear loading at remote distance have been studied. The interphases between fibers and matrix have been modeled by the spring-layer which accounts for continuity of tractions, but allows radial and circumferential displacement jumps across the interphase that are linearly related to the normal and tangential tractions. Numerical calculations for basic cells of the composites have been carried out using the boundary element method. For an undamaged composite the micro-level stresses at the matrix side of the interphase and effective shear stiffness have been computed as functions of fiber volume ratio $V_f$ and interphase stiffness k. Results are presented for various interphase stiffnesses from the perfect bonding to the case of total debonding. For a square array composite the results show that for a high interphase stiffness k>10, an increase of $V_f$ increases the effective transverse shear modulus G over bar of the composite. For a relatively low interphase stiffness k<1, it is shwon that an increase of $V_f$ slightly decreases the effective transverse shear modulus. For the perfect bonding case, G over bar for a hexagonal array composite is slightly larger than that for a square array composite. Also for a damaged composite partially debonded at the interphase, local stress fields and effective shear modulus are calculated and a decrease in G over bar has been observed.

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are new materials used in various fields of science and engineering, one of which is civil engineering. Owing to their distinguished capabilities such as super elasticity, energy dissipation, and tolerating cyclic deformations, these materials have been of interest to engineers. On the other hand, the connections of a steel structure are of paramount importance because of their vulnerabilities during an earthquake. Therefore, it is indispensable to find approaches to augment the efficiency and safety of the connection. This research investigates the behavior of steel connections with extended end plates equipped hybridly with 8 rows of high strength bolts as well as Nitinol superelastic SMA bolts. The connections are studied using component method in dual form. In this method, the components affecting the connections behavior, such as beam flange, beam web, column web, extended end plate, and bolts are considered as parallel and series springs according to the Euro-Code3. Then, the nonlinear force- displacement response of the connection is presented in the form of moment-rotation curve. The results obtained from this survey demonstrate that the connection has ductility, in addition to its high strength, due to high ductility of SMA bolts.
Objective : The aims of this study were to investigate the quantitative relationship between pituitary macroadenoma size and degree of visual impairment, and assess visual improvement after surgical resection of the tumor. Methods : The medical records of patients with pituitary adenoma, who had undergone trans-sphenoidal adenectomy between January 2009 and January 2011, were reviewed. Patients underwent an ocular examination and brain MRI before and after surgery. The visual impairment score (VIS) was derived by combining the scores of best-corrected visual acuity and visual field. The relationship between VIS and tumor size/tumor type/position of the optic chiasm was assessed. Results : Seventy-eight patients were included (41 male, 37 female). Thirty-two (41%) patients experienced blurred vision or visual field defect as an initial symptom. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that tumors <2.2 cm tended to cause minimal or no visual impairment. Statistical analysis showed that 1) poor preoperative vision is related to tumor size, displacement of the optic chiasm in the sagittal view on MRI and optic atrophy, and 2) poorer visual prognosis is associated with greater preoperative VIS. In multivariate analysis the only factor significantly related to VIS improvement was increasing pituitary adenoma size, which predicted decreased improvement. Conclusion : Results from this study show that pituitary adenomas larger than 2 cm cause defects in vision while adenomas 2 cm or smaller do not cause significant visual impairment. Patients with a large macroadenoma or giant adenoma should undergo surgical resection as soon as possible to prevent permanent visual loss.

One of the ways to minimize damage by a slope collapse is to set up preventive measures in advance by measuring displacements in a slope and predicting a collapse. There have been many different technologies developed to predict a collapse with diverse measuring equipment. Especially recently, attempts have been made to utilize terrestrial LiDAR, a high-tech imaging equipment to measure displacements on a scope. Terrestrial LiDAR generates three-dimensional information about an object with millimeter-level accuracy from hundreds of meters away and has been used in an array of fields including restoration of cultural assets, three-dimensional modeling, and making of topographic maps. In recent years, it has been used to measure displacements in structure as well. This study monitored displacements in slopes of high collapse risk with terrestrial LiDAR. As a result, it was able to confirm the applicability of terrestrial LiDAR to the field, and proposed monitoring methods.

Inclinometer sensors are widely applied in many fields. Especially in the field of construction of high-rise buildings also measure the horizontal and vertical help has been applied to monitor. Recent micro electro-mechanical system(MEMS) technology with the development of the many sensors have been developed. In this paper, a MEMS inclinometer is based on a MEMS accelerometer. The sensor can measure the angle of inclination using the relationship between static acceleration and gravity acceleration from an accelerometer. From this principle, inclinometer has been developed that has more accurate. The accuracy is proved by the experiment with laser displacement. Results in the experiment express high-accuracy, stability and economics of MEMS inclinometer. In conclusion, wireless MEMS inclinometer sensor is expected to be applicable in the areas of construction and many other industries with accurate and convenient monitoring system.

Recent work in the mechanics of fracture points out the desirability of a knowledge of the elastic energy release rate, the crack extension force, and the character of the stress field surrounding a crack tip in analyzing the strength of cracked bodies. The objective of this work is to provide a discussion of the energy rates, stress fields and the like of various cases for anisotropic elastic bodies which might be of interest. Reinforced concrete, wood, laminates, and some special types of elastic bodies with controlled grain orientation are often orthotropic. In this paper, determination of the stress intensity factors(SIFs) of orthotropic plane elastic body using crack tip singular element and fine mesh in near the crack tip is performed. A numerical method in this paper was used by displacement correlation method. A numerical example problem of an orthotropic cantilevered single edge cracked elastic body subjected to shear loading was analyzed, and the results of this paper are in good agreement with those of the others.

Because of the high specific stiffness and strength inherent in the sandwich structure composed of facesheet that resists in-plane loads and a core that resists out-of-plane loads, it is often used for large and light-weighted structures. However, inevitably the increased flexibility allows greater deformation-based disturbances in the structures. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the structural safety. To obtain more accurate analytical results, the input disturbances must more closely simulate real load conditions; to improve accuracy, non-linear elements such as gust effects were considered. In addition, the structural safety was analyzed for the iso-grid sandwich panel structure using fluid-structure interactions. For a more realistic simulation, flow velocity fields, which consider the effects of irregular gust fluctuation, were generated and the coupled field was analyzed by mapping the pressure and displacement.
