Comparative Study of GPS-Integrated Concrete Supply Management using Discrete Event Simulation

  • The management of vehicular supply of "perishable" construction material, such as concrete mixes, faces a series of uncertainties such as weather, daily traffic patterns and accidents. Presented in this paper is a logistics control model for managing a hauling fleet with interrelated processes at both ends and queue capacities. Discrete event simulation is used to model the complex interactions of production units and the randomness of the real world. Two alternative strategies for ready mix concrete delivery, with and without an off-site waiting queue, are studied to compare supply performance. Secondly, the paper discusses the effect of an agent-based GPS tracking system providing real-time travel data that lessens the uncertainty of trucking time. The results show that the combination of GPS information with off-site queuing reduces productivity loss and process wastes of concrete placement as well as the idleness of supply trucks when crew or pump experience an unexpected stoppage.

Aeroelastic stability analysis of a bridge deck with added vanes using a discrete vortex method

  • A two dimensional discrete vortex method (DIVEX) has been developed at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, to predict unsteady and incompressible flow fields around closed bodies. The basis of the method is the discretisation of the vorticity field, rather than the velocity field, into a series of vortex particles that are free to move in the flow field that the particles collectively induce. This paper gives a brief description of the numerical implementation of DIVEX and presents the results of calculations on a recent suspension bridge deck section. The results from both the static and flutter analysis of the main deck in isolation are in good agreement with experimental data. A brief study of the effect of flow control vanes on the aeroelastic stability of the bridge is also presented and the results confirm previous analytical and experimental studies. The aeroelastic study is carried out firstly using aerodynamic derivatives extracted from the DIVEX simulations. These results are then assessed further by presenting results from full time-dependent aeroelastic solutions for the original deck and one of the vane cases. In general, the results show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with results from experimental data and demonstrate that DIVEX is a useful design tool in the field of wind engineering.

Prediction of Frequency Modulation of BPF Tonal Noise for Random Pitch Cross-Flow Fans by Unsteady Viscous Flow Computations (비정상 점성유동 해석에 의한 부등피치 횡류홴의 BPF 순음 주파수 변조 특성 예측)

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by computational methods. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer. and the sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The discrete noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random pitch (type-A and -B) blades are compared by their SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra. and the frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are discussed. Besides. a mathematical model is proposed for the prediction of discrete blade tonal noise and is validated with available experimental data. The fan performance is also compared with experimental data. indicating that the random pitch effect does not significantly alter the performance characteristics at ${\phi}$ 〉 0.4

A Prony Method Based on Discrete Fourier Transform for Estimation- of Oscillation Mode in Power Systems (이산푸리에변환에 기초한 Prony 법과 전력계통의 진동모드 추정)

  • This paper describes an improved Prony method in its speed, accuracy and reliability by efficiently determining the optimal sampling interval with use of DFT (discrete Fourier transformation). In the Prony method the computation time is dominated by the size of the linear prediction matrix, which is given by the number of data times the modeling order The size of the matrix in a general Prony method becomes large because of large number of data and so does the computation time. It is found that the Prony method produces satisfactory results when SNR is greater than three. The maximum sampling interval resulting minimum computation time is determined using the fact that the spectrum in DFT is inversely proportional to sampling interval. Also the process of computing the modes is made efficient by applying Hessenberg method to the companion matrix with complex shift and computing selectively only the dominant modes of interest. The proposed method is tested against the 2003 KEPCO system and found to be efficient and reliable. The proposed method may play a key role in monitoring in real time low frequency oscillations of power systems .

IN-CYLINDER FLOW ANALYSIS USING WAVELET ANALYSIS

  • Better fundamental understanding of the interactions between the in-cylinder flows and combustion process is an important requirement for further improvement in the fuel economy and emissions of internal combustion(IC) engines. Flow near a spark plug at the time of ignition plays an important role for early flame kernel development(EFKD). Velocity data measurements in this study were made with a two-component laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) near a spark plug in a single cylinder optical spark ignition(SI) engine with a heart-shaped combustion chamber. LDV velocity data were collected on an individual cycle basis under wide-open motored conditions with an engine speed of 1,000rpm. This study examines and compares the flow fields as interpreted through ensemble, cyclic and discrete wavelet transformation(DWT) analysis. The energy distributions in the non-stationary engine flows are also investigated over crank angle phase and frequency through continuous wavelet transformation(CWT) for a position near a spark plug. Wavelet analysis is appropriate for analyzing the flow fields in engines because it gives information about the transient events in a time and frequency plane. The results of CWT analysis are provided and compared with the mean flows of DWT first decomposition level for all cycles at a position. Low frequency high energy found with CWT corresponds well with the peak locations of the mean velocity. The high frequency flows caused by the intake jet gradually decay as the piston approaches the bottom dead center(BDC).

  • We analyze respondents' reaction to Obama's advertisement, titled 'Fix the Economy'. These respondents are divided into three groups of democratic party, republican party and independent group. By manipulating the skin complexion of the Obama photo, participants were either exposed to the dark or light version of the Obama photograph. In order to obtain decorrelated stationary data, we have applied the discrete Fourier transform to each curve and then we have applied Fan (1998)'s adaptive Neyman test to the discrete Fourier transformed data. As a result, a significant difference is found out only in the independent group.

  • Impact Echo method has been successful in detecting a variety of defects in concrete structure. This study has the objectives to show important aspects of applying the Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) to signal processing of Modified Impact Echo(ModIE) Measurement systems and to the understanding of the seismic wave propagation. The data of ModIE were processed by DWT and compared with the results of conventional ModIE Analysis. Although it is inconsistent in the evaluated thickness of concrete lining, the DWT provides the features of separation, synthesis and de-noising in the original signal. The application of technique by wavelet was explained numerically with ABAQUS and performed experimentally with a real scale model in this work. Further works on the possible ways for creating new mother wavelet are specially needed for the enhancement of seismic signal analysis.

Designing a Microphone Array for Acoustical Inverse Problems (음향학적 역문제를 위한 마이크로폰의 정렬방법)

  • An important inverse problem in the field of acoustics is that of reconstructing the strengths of a number of sources given a model of transmission paths from the sources to a number of sensors at which measurements are made. In dealing with this kind of the acoustical inverse problem, strengths of the discretised source distribution can be simply deduced from the measured pressure field data and the inversion of corresponding matrix of frequency response functions. However, deducing :he solution of such problems is not straightforward due to the practical difficulty caused by their inherent ill-conditioned behaviour. Therefore, in order to overcome this difficulty associated with the ill-conditioning, the problem is replaced by a nearby well-conditioned problem whose solution approximates the required solution. In this paper a microphone array are identified for which the inverse problem is optimally conditioned, which can be robust to contaminating errors. This involves sampling both source and field in a manner which results in the discrete pressures and source strengths constituting a discrete Fourier transform pair.

  • The discrete noise of the cross-flow fan with uniform/random pitch blades is predicted by computational methods. With the time dependent surface pressure data obtained by solving the Wavier-Stokes equation, the acoustic pressure is calculated by the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The positions of the blade noise source are identified through investigation of the acoustic pressure history induced by one blade, and it is confirmed that the dominant noise source is near the stabilizer. Since the acoustic pressure of the random pitch fan fluctuates according to blade passing, the dominant BPF noise for the uniform pitch fan is modified into some reduced discrete noises which have a 50Hz difference from BPF.
