The icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON had her second ice trial in the Arctic Ocean in the summer season of 2010. During the voyage, the local ice loads acting on the bow of the port side were measured using 14 strain gauges. These measurements were carried out in three icebreaking performance tests. To convert the measured strains into the local ice pressures, a finite element model of the instrumented area was developed. The influence coefficient method (ICM), which uses the influence coefficient from the finite element model, and the direct method, which uses the measured strain, were selected as the conversion methods. As a result, the maximum measured pressure was 1.236MPa, and the average difference between ICM and the direct method was about 5% for an area of $0.2m^2$. The pressure-area relationship of the measurement falls below the range of the existing pressure-area curve, which is due to the low ice strength of melted ice in the summer.
The high-density polyurethane method uses the instantaneous expansion pressure of injected material to stabilize soft ground, allowing reinforcement, restoration, and construction to be carried out in suboptimal ground conditions. Under normal and, even poor conditions, the method is easily applied because the working time is very short. The method is environmentally friendly and results have excellent durability. The purpose of this study was to verify the physical and mechanical properties of high-density polyurethane in the ground. Initial testing of strength, direct shear, and soil environment stability was followed by testing for permeability in order to address environmental concerns. The results of the experiments showed that the internal friction angle was about twice as high and the adhesion was about 2.5 to 3.5 times higher than for dense and hard clay, and that the permeability factor was significantly lower compared with the existing grouting method, within the range of 1.0 × 10-5.
Purpose: This study evaluated the bonding strength of direct relining resin to Co-Cr denture base material according to surface treatment and immersion time. Materials and methods: In this study, Co-Cr alloy was used in hexagon shape. Each specimen was cut in flat surface, and sandblasted with $110\;{\mu}m$$Al_2O_3$ for 1 minute. 54 specimens were divided into 3 groups; group A-control group, group B-applied with surface primer A, group C-applied with surface primer B. Self curing direct resin was used for this study. Each group was subdivided into another 3 groups according to the immersion time. After the wetting storage, shear bond strength of the specimens were measured with universal testing machine. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc method. Results: In experiment of sandblasting specimens, surface roughness of the alloy was the highest after 1 minute sandblasting. In experiment of testing shear bond strength, bonding strength was lowered on group B, C, A. There were significant differences between 3 groups. According to period, Bonding strength was the highest on 0 week storage group, and the weakest on 2 week storage group. But there were no significant differences between 3 periods. According to group and period, bonding strength of all group were lowered according to immersion time but there were no significant differences on group B and group C, but there was significant difference according to immersion time on group A. Conclusion: It is useful to sandblast and adopt metal primers when relining Co-Cr metal base dentures in chair-side.
This study was aimed to verify the validity of the flexural toughness evaluation method of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete(SFRS) currently being adopted by Korea Highway Corporation(KHC). Total 33 beam specimens using six different kinds of steel fiber products were prepared at tunnel construction sites and flexural toughness tests were executed at laboratory. Equivalent flexural strengths and toughness quotients were evaluated from the tests following the KHC guide iud these were compared with the quality grades determined under the guides proposed by ASTM, ITA and EFNARC. To discard the disadvantage that the toughness quotient could be influenced by flexural strength when following the KHC guide, a modification substituting the designed flexural strength for the flexural strength in the toughness quotient calculation formula was proposed to rate the quality of SFRS more adequately.

In concrete structural design provisons, two methods are normally provided to control deflection; direct method and indirect method. It is more efficient to use the indirect deflection control by which the span/depth ratio is limited not to exceed an allowable deflection limit. Because actual deflections are affected by many causes, it is complicated to evaluate actual deflections. In this study, limit span/depth ratios are derived from the deflection calculated directly at the serviceability limit state in RC members. The deflection is obtained from using average curvature, which depends on materials model used. The main variables examined are tension stiffening effect, concrete strength, cross section size and compressive steel ratio. It could be appeared that more analytical consistency is secured to use the 2nd order form of tension stiffening effect. And the limit span/depth ratio is dependent on material strength, tensile and compressive steel ratio but it is independent on cross-section size.

Most sample surveys are designed to estimate reliable statistics for the whole population and for some large subpopulations. However, the research for small area estimation have been increasing in recent years because users demand to reliable estimates for smaller subpopulations like small areas or specific domains. In Korea, the Economically Active Population Survey(EAPS) is the main household survey that produces monthly unemployment rates for nationwide and 16 large areas (7 metropolitans and 9 provinces) in Korea. For county level estimation, direct estimators are not reliable because of the small sample sizes. We consider small area estimation of the county level unemployment ratesfrom the sample observations in EAPS. To do this, we use an area level model to "borrow strength" from the auxiliary information, such as administrative data and census data. The proposed method is based on the assumption of normality of the model errors in the area level model. The proposed method is compared with the other alternatives in terms of the estimated mean squared errors.

In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.

In this paper, the effect of shear rate on internal friction angle and unconfined compressive strength of non-cemented and cemented sand was investigated. A dry Jumunjin sand was prepared at loose, medium, and dense conditions with a relative density of 40, 60 and 80%. Then, series of direct shear tests were conducted at shear rates of 0.32, 0.64, and 2.54 mm/min. In addition, a cemented sand with cement ratio of 8% and 12% was compacted into a cylindrical specimen with 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. Unconfined compression tests on the cemented sand were performed with various shear rates such as 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10%/min. Regardless of a degree of cementation, the unconfined compressive strength of the cemented sand and the angle of internal friction of the non-cemented sand tended to increase as the shear rate increased. For the non-cemented sand, the angle of internal friction increased by 4° at maximum as the shear rate increased. The unconfined compressive strength of the cemented sand also increased as the shear rate increased. However, its increasing pattern declined after the standard shear rate (1 mm/min). A discrete element method was also used to analyze the crack initiation and its development for the cemented sand with shear rate. Numerical results of unconfined compressive strength and failure pattern were similar to the experimental results.
The direct synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with acidic and basic active sites is challenging due to the introduction of functional groups by post-functionalization method often jeopardize the framework integrity. Herein, we report the direct synthesis of acid-base bifunctional MOFs with tuning acid-base strength. Employing modulated hydrothermal (MHT) approach, microporous MOFs named $UiO-66-NH_2$ was prepared. Through the ring-opening reaction of 1,3-propanesultone with amino group, $UiO-66-NH_2-SO_3H-type$ catalysts can be obtained. The synthesized catalysts were well characterized and their catalytic performances were evaluated in one-pot glucose to 5-HMF conversion. Results revealed the acid-base bi-functional catalyst possessed high activity and excellent stability. This work provides a general and economically viable approach for the large-scale synthesis of acid-base bi-functional MOFs for their potential use in catalysis field.
A new strut-tie model using secant stiffness, Direct Inelastic Strut-Tie Model, was developed. Since basically the proposed design method uses linear analysis, it is convenient and stable in numerical analysis. At the same time, the proposed design method can accurately estimate the inelastic strength and ductility demands of struts and ties because it can analyzes the inelastic behavior of structure using iterative calculations for secant stiffness. In the present study, the procedure of the proposed design method was established, and a computer program incorporating the proposed method was developed. Design examples using the proposed method were presented, and its advantages were highlighted by the comparison with the traditional strut-tie model. The Direct Inelastic Strut-Tie Model, as an integrated analysis/design method, can directly address the design strategy intended by the engineer to prevent development of macro-cracks and brittle failure of struts. Since the proposed model can analyze the inelastic deformation, indeterminate strut-tie model can be used. Also, since the proposed model controls the local deformations of struts and ties, it can be used as a performance-based design method for various design criteria.
