This study is to develop the suitable hydrologic models for determination of the size and location of detention storage facilities to restrain stormwater runoff in urban areas. Fictitious areas of two levels are considered to seize the hydrologic response characteristics. A one-square-kilometer area is selected for the catchment level, and a 10-square-kilometer area consisting of 10 catchments is adapted at the watershed level as representative of urban drainage area. In this analysis, different rainfall frequencies, land uses, drainage patterns, basin shapes and detention storage policies are considered. Flow reduction effect of detention storage facilities is deduced from storage ratio and detention basin factor. A substantial saving in detention storage volumes is achieved when the detention storage is planned at the watershed level than the catchment level. For the application of real watersheds, two watersheds in Seoul metropolitan area-Jamshil 2, Seongnae 1-are selected on the basis of hydrologic response characteristics. Through the regression analysis between dimensionless detention storage volume, dimensionless upstream area ratio and reduction rate of storage ratio, the regression equations to determine the size and location of detention storage facilities are presented.
This Paper applied a simple strength parameter averaging method to double layered systems consisting of the strong sand layer overlying the soft clay deposit. This study derived a formula which defines a critical depth as the strength parameters, and used the correction parameter, $\alpha$ to reduce an error of the strength parameter averaging method. The results of the method were presented in the form of dimensionless charts and were compared with the results of several solutions proposed by Satyanarayana & Grag, Sreenivasulu, and Meyerhof & Hanna. The results of the proposed method coincided with the method of Meyerhof & Hanna and the results obtained from FLAC. But the Satyanarayana & Grag method and the Sreenivasulu method overestimated the bearing capacity. Consequently, the bearing capacity of foundation on sand layer overlying soft clay layer can be approximately estimated by using the proposed dimensionless charts.
Axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were investigated in a slurry bubble column with pilot plant scale(D=1.0 m). Effects of gas velocity, surface tension of continuous liquid medium and solid fraction in the slurry phase on the axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were examined. The bubble holdup decreased with increasing radial dimensionless distance from the center of the column, while it increased with increasing dimensionless distance in the axial direction from the distributor, in all the cases studied. The radial non-uniformity of bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreasing surface tension of liquid medium, while it was not dependent upon the solid fraction in the slurry phase. The axial non-uniformity of bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity, but it does not change considerably with variations of liquid surface tension or solid fraction in the slurry phase . The axial and radial distributions of bubble holdup were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.

Nucleate pool boiling experiments for R11 under a constant wall temperature condition were carried out. A microscale heater array was used for the heating and the measurement of high temporal and spatial resolution by the Wheatstone bridge circuit. Very sensitive heat flow rate data were obtained by the control for the surface condition with high time resolution. The measured heat flow rate shows a discernable peak at the initial growth stage and reaches an almost constant value. In the thermal growth region, bubble shows a growth proportional to $t^{\frac{1}{5}}$. The bubble growth behavior is analyzed with a dimensionless parameter to compare with the previous results in the same scale. As the wall superheat increases, the departure diameter and the departure time increase, and the waiting time decreases. But the asymptotic growth rate is not affected by the wall superheat change. The effect of the wall superheat is resolved into the suggested growth equation. Dimensionless parameters of time and bubble radius characterize the thermal growth behavior well, irrespective of wall condition. The comparison between the result of this study and the previous results shows a good agreement at the thermal growth region. The quantitative analysis for the heat transfer mechanism is conducted with the measured heat flow rate behavior and the bubble growth behavior. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble is about twice as much as the instantaneous heat flow rate supplied from the wall.

Nucleate boiling experiments on heating surface of constant wall temperature were performed using R113 for almost saturated pool boiling conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain a constant wall temperature condition of heating surface and to measure the heat flow rate with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Bubble images during the bubble growth were taken as 5000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble growth behavior was analyzed using the new dimensionless parameters for each growth regions to permit comparisons with previous experimental results at the same scale. We found that the new dimensionless parameters can describe the whole growth region as initial and later (thermal) respectively. The comparisons showed good agreement in the initial and thermal growth regions. In the initial growth region including surface tension controlled, transition and inertia controlled regions as divided by Robinson and Judd, the bubble growth rate showed that the bubble radius was proportional to $t^{2/3}$ regardless of working fluids and heating conditions. And in the thermal growth region as also called asymptotic region, the bubble showed a growth rate that was proportional to $t^{1/5}$, also. Those growth rates were slower than the growth rates proposed in previous analytical analyses. The required heat flow rate for the volume change of the observed bubble was estimated to be larger than the heat flow rate measured at the wall. Heat, which is different from the instantaneous heat supplied through the heating wall, can be estimated as being transferred through the interface between bubble and liquid even with saturated pool condition. This phenomenon under a saturated pool condition needs to be analyzed and the data from this study can supply the good experimental data with the precise boundary condition (constant wall temperature).

The purpose of the present work is to show the best thermal storage material and the sensitivity of the parameters on the thermal performance by experimentally investigating the effects of the parameters on the thermal performance of the spherical capsule system using paraffins superior to the commercial one. The paraffins were n-Tetradecane and the mixture of n-Tetradecane 40% and n-Hexadecane 60%. The experimental parameters were the Reynolds number of 8, 12, and 16 and the inlet temperature of-7, -4, -1, and $2^{\circ}C$. The charging and the discharing time, the dimensionless thermal storage amount, and the averge heat transfer coefficient in the tank were obtained by utilizing the local temperature variation in the tank. The local charging and discharging time in the tank was axially and radially different a lot. The effects of the inlet temperature on the charging and the discharging time were larger during the charging process than during the discharging process, but the effects of the Reynolds number on the charging and the discharging time were in reverse order. The paraffins were better by 11~72% than the water with the inorganic material in the charging time aspect, but no difference in the discharging time aspect. The effects of the Reynolds number on the dimensionless thermal storage amount were smaller than the effects of the inlet temperature during the charging process, but in reverse order during the discharging process within the working range of the experimental parameters. The effects of the inlet temperature and the Reynolds number on the average heat transfer coefficient were larger during the discharging process than during the charging process. The average heat transfer coefficient for the paraffins was larger by 40% maximum than that for the commercial material during the charing and the discharging process.
In this paper, we present the results of the wear analysis of journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. We calculate journal bearing wear by using a modified specific wear rate considering the fractional film defect coefficient and load-sharing ratio for the asperity portion of a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime coupled with previously presented graphical data of experimental lifetime linear wear in radial journal bearings. Based on the calculated wear depth, we obtain a new oil film thickness for every crank angle. By examination of the oil film thickness, we determine whether the oil film thickness at the wear scar region is in a mixed lubrication regime by comparing dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, to 3.0 at every crank angle. We present the lift-off speed and the crank angles involved with the wear calculation for bearings #1 and #2. The dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, illustrates whether the lubrication region between the two surfaces is still within the bounds of the mixed lubrication regime after scarring of the surface by wear. In addition, we present in tables the asperity contact pressure, the real minimum film thickness at the wear scar region, the modified specific wear rate, and the wear angle, α, for bearings #1 & #2. To show the real shape of the oil film at wear scar region, we depict the actual oil film thickness in graphs. We also tabulated the ranges of bearing angles related with wear scar. We present the wear volume for bearings #1 and #2 after one turn-on and turn-off of the engine ignition switch for five kinds of equivalent surface roughness. We show that the accumulated wear volume after a single turn-on and turn-off of an ignition switch normally increases with increasing surface roughness, with a few exceptions.

The types of dam-break have been classified as instantaneous and gradual failure. Equations for estimating the peak outflow have been derived respectively as a metric unit. New dimensionless routing curves have been deveoloped based on the distance parameter which has been used in SMPDBK and hydro-geometric characteristics of dams and reservoirs in Korea. These suggested curves can be used for any case of the flow of supercritical or subcritical. The computed peak flowrate shows the trend of decreasing dependence on the Froude numbers as it increases. These curves are applied to Hyogi dam. and the results have good agreements with the data observed in the peak discharges, peak elevations and flood travel time. The simplified dam-break model in this study would contribute effectively to forecast the dam-break flood in this country with minimum informations in a short time.

This study is derived relationships of the resistance coefficients of Darcy-Weisbach and Manning for flow resistance and the dimensionless velocity using many field measurements for 1,875 rivers consist of sand 179, gravel 992, cobble 651 and boulder 53 channels in natural rivers, respectively. The relationships of power law forms are developed as a function of flow discharge, friction slope, and relative submergence by the regression and the semi-empirical method. The measurements distribution of Manning resistance coefficients by the Box-Whisker Plots show the values which ranges from 0.004~0.151 for sand, 0.008~0.250 for gravel, 0.015~0.327 for cobble, 0.023~0.444 for boulder in natural rivers, respectively. Relationships of these semi-empirical and resistance coefficients will be useful to give information in hydraulic engineering.

The heat transfer and flow measurements from a convex curved surface to a circular impinging jet have been made. The flow at the nozzle exit has a fully developed velocity profile. The jet Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 11,000 to 50,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 10, and the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) from 0.034 to 0.089. The results show that the stagnation point Nusselt number (N $u_{st}$ ) increases with increasing value of d/D. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point occurs at L/d .ident. 6 to 8 for all Re's and d/D's tested. For larger L/d, N $u_{st}$ dependency on Re is stronger due to an increase of turbulence in the approaching jet as a result of the more active exchange of momentum with a surrounding air. The local Nusselt number decreases monotonically from its maximum value at the stagnation point. However, for L/d=2 and Re=23,000, and for L/d.leq.4 and Re=50,000, the stream wise Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at r/d .ident. 2.2. The formation of the secondary maxima is attributed to an increase in the turbulence level resulting from the transition from a laminar to a turbulent boundary layer.ndary layer.
