  • When ultrasonic wave with barium titanate as an ultrasonic transducer (96.84kc, 1.4kv, 240mA) was applied to a dilute glucose solution, glucose was oxidized to glucuronic acid. It was found that the lower the glucose concentration, the higher the oxidation rate. The aeration and the presence of ferrous sulfate as a catalyst were found to increase the rate. The optimal duration for applying the wave to the solution was found to be six hours.

  • The adsorption ability of dyes on chitin, a natural polymer was investigated for decolorization of dye wastewater. Chitin was manufactured in lab by decalcification in dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and deproteination in dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution with shrimp shells. Absorbance of residue solution of dyebaths after dye adsorptions of chtin were measured in varieties of dye concentration and dipping periods. Three kinds of Direct dyes -C.I. Direct Red 81 (red 81), C.I. Direct Brown l(brown 1) and C.I. Direct Green 26(green 26) - were used. Red 81 and brown 1 have smaller molecular weight than green 26. The results from experimentals were of]tamed as follows: 1) Adsorption of green 26 was improved in dyebath by addition of salt, but red 81 and brown 1 were not found any improvements. 2) Smaller size of chitin particles could be absorbed much more speedy. In this experiments, the smallest range of chitin particle size was $250\mu{m}$ and less. 3) The most efficient amount of chitin for 20m1 of dyebath was 0.2g, 4) Both of red 81 and brown 1 showed good and speedy adsorption abilities as dyestuffs of over 90 percent in just one minute in dyebath of 0.01% dye concentration. But green 26 was absorbed slowly because of its large molecular weight. It took 40minutes to absorb dyestuffs of over 90 percent in dyebath of 0.01% dye concentration.

  • The demand of L-arabinose has been increased recently because of its advantages including clinical effect. L-arabinose can be produced from dilute acid hydrolysis of agricultural wastes. In this study, optimum conditions of L-arabinose production using dilute acid hydrolysis of agricultural wastes and nutshells were determined. Among the tested various agricultural wastes and nutshells, corn fiber was selected as the best raw material for the production of arabinose. The highest arabinose production was achieved an acid hydrolysis of corn fiber for 1 h at 130$^{\circ}C$ with 0.4% sulfuric acid. Above optimal conditions, it was obtained 20.1 g/L glucose, 10.1 g/L xylose, 7.8 g/L arabinose and 1.8 g/L galactose from 90 g/L of corn fiber. For the purification of arabinose, it was carried out to remove all of sugars except arabinose by the Candida tropicalis cultivation of acid hydrolyzate and an organic contaminants such as pigments by the active carbon treatment of fermentation broth. Moreover, experiments were carried out to eliminate an ions by exchange chromatography. Finally, we obtained 3.1 g of partially purified L-arabinose powder with about 40% yield by evaporation and vacuum drying.

  • Certain microalgae have been known to use light and various carbon sources to produce carbohydrates, mainly in the form of starch. This is one of the pertinent feedstocks replacing agricultural products for the production of bioethanol by yeast. This study focuses upon dilute acid hydrothermal pretreatments at low cost and high efficiency to compete with current methods, and employs Chlamydomonas reinhardtii UTEX 90 as the feedstock. With dry cells of 5%(w/v), the algal biomass was pretreated with sulfuric acid(1-5%) under temperatures from 100 to $120^{\circ}C$, from 15 to 120 min. As a result, the glucose release from the biomass was maximum at 58%(w/w) after pretreatment with 3% sulfuric acid at $110^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. This method enabled not only starch, but also the hydrolysis of other oligosaccharides in the algal cell in high efficiency. Arrhenius-type of model equation enabled extrapolation of some yields of glucose beyond this range. The pretreated slurry was fermented by yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae S288C, resulting in an ethanol yield of 29.2% from algal biomass. This study suggests that the pretreated algal biomass is a suitable feedstock for ethanol production and can have a positive impact on large-scale applied systems.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the applicability of dried jujube (Zizypui Fructus) distributed by size as a functional food material and herbal medicine by evaluating its physicochemical characteristics and betulinic acid content. Methods and Results: It was shown that the carbohydrate content of in jujube fruit significantly increased with fruit size; 81.42% for large, 79.83% for medium, and 76.39% for small. Similarly, the dilute ethanol extract content of each group was 72.48% (large), 69.56% (medium), and 64.16% (small). A free sugar analysis indicated that glucose, fructose and sucrose were found in quantitieds proportional to jujube fruit size, the total free sugar values were 68.85%, 63.93%, and 57.37% for large, medium, and small fruit sizes respectively. The betulinic acid content for large, medium, and small fruit was 0.50 mg/g, 0.54 mg/g, and 0.58 mg/g respectively, indicating that smaller jujube contained a higher amount of betulinic acid. Conclusions: It is considered that betulinic acid content could be used as a criteria for jujube fruit quality control.

  • Natural silk is formed by two proteins : the crystalline fibroin (inside the silk thread) and amorphous sericin (as a tube outside the thread). The degumming process is used to eliminate the external sericin prior to dyeing ; generally it makes use of soaps at about pH 10. Sericin is the protein constituent that "gums"together the fibroin filaments of cocoon silk. It constitutes about 25% of the weight of the cocoon, is soluble in hot water and "gels" on cooling. The removal of sericin from raw silk, known as degumming, is a simple but important process usually employing hot dilute soap or alkaline solution and occasionally dilute acids or enzymic methods. During degumming, alkali is taken up by the sericin and the free acid from the soap is formed ; this may be deposited on the fiber, reducing the rate of degumming and protecting it from hydrolysis. Alkali is often added to maintain or restore the pH of the baths, but it is rarely used alone, since it leaves the silk rather harsh in handle. If complete sericin removal is required as for printing, sodium carbonate may be added. If the pH of the bath exceeds 11, the fibroin is attacked. Recently, According to the development of electrolysis, we can be obtained the electrolytic reduction water(above pH 11.5) and electrolytic oxidation water (below pH 3). The aim of this work was to study a degumming process using electrolytic water and a possibility of sericin recovery. The new degumming process used electrolytic water operates at $95^\circ{C}$ for 2hr. without any reagents. The wastewater of this process are formed by a solution of sericin in water. This conditions suggest the study of a possible recovery of this protein (sericin) which has an amino acid composition suitable for many used in cosmetics, textile finishing agents, animal feeding, etc. The degumming process using electrolytic water is available to reduce treatment costs and pollute and at the same time to recover sericin.

  • A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of caffeine in forensic aqueous sample. The centrifuged sample ($100{\mu}l$) was diluted 50-fold with distilled water. The diluted sample ($400{\mu}l$) was then diluted further with $200{\mu}l$ of 0.1% formic acid solution and $400{\mu}l$ of acetonitrile containing 500 ng of caffeine-(3-methyl-$^{13}C_3$) prior to LC-MS/MS analysis. The mobile phase was composed of 0.1% formic acid in distilled water (A) and acetonitrile (B). Chromatographic separation was performed by using a Zorbax SB-C18 ($100mm{\times}2.1mm$ i.d., $3.5{\mu}m$) column and caffeine was eluted within 1.1 min. Linear least-squares regression with a 1/x weighting factor was used to generate a calibration curve with the coefficients of determination ($r^2=0.9983$). The lower limit of quantification was $25ng/ml$ for the analyte. The process efficiency was 98.6~100.1%. Intra- and inter-day precisions were not more than 2.1% and 1.7%, while intra- and inter-day accuracies were ranged from -6.8 to 4.5%, respectively. The suitability of the method was examined by analyzing unknown forensic aqueous samples.

  • In NaCl solutions acidified with $H_2SO_4$, Fe20Cr1.1N alloy showed enhanced pitting corrosion resistance than Fe20Cr alloy. An XPS analysis revealed that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy contained higher cationfraction of Cr than that of Fe20Cr alloy, and nitrogen was incorporated into the film. In addition, it was found that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy was thinner and had higher oxygen vacancy density than that of Fe20Cr alloy. Based on these observations, it was concluded that the chemical composition was the determining factor for the protectiveness of the passive film of Fe20Cr based alloy in dilute $H_2SO_4$ solution.
