The major drawback of zirconia-based materials, in view of their applications as targets for minor actinide transmutation, is their poor thermal conductivity. The addition of MgO, which has high thermal conductivity, to zirconia-based materials is expected to improve their thermal conductivity. On these grounds, the present study aims at phase characterization and thermophysical property evaluation of neodymium-substituted zirconia (Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9; using Nd2O3 as a surrogate for Am2O3) and its composites with MgO. The composite was prepared by a solid-state reaction of Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9 (synthesized by gel combustion) and commercial MgO powders at 1773 K. Phase characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction and the microstructural investigation was performed using a scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9 increases upon composite formation with MgO, which is attributed to a higher thermal expansivity of MgO. Similarly, specific heat also increases with the addition of MgO to Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9. Thermal conductivity was calculated from measured thermal diffusivity, temperature-dependent density and specific heat values. Thermal conductivity of Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9-MgO (50 wt%) composite is more than that of typical UO2 fuel, supporting the potential of Zr0.8Nd0.2O1.9-MgO composites as target materials for minor actinides transmutation.
The problems of solid waste disposal into the ground in connection with environmental aspects in the vicinity of a site would be very significant, though ground disposal for solid waste is safe and economical method. Studies of the waste-movement and migration of radionuclides (Sr-90 and Cs-137) for the disposal into the ground were performed under laboratory and field conditions. Affinity of the soils for radionuclide solution was higher than that in the acid solution. The sorption of radionuclides by the soils showed a time-dependent reation. The migration rates of radiostrontium and radiocesium were a range of 3.73$\times$10$^{-3}$ to 10.9$\times$10$^{-3}$ cm/day. The nuclides in the soil migrate much more slowly than the water, probably due to its high exchange capacity. The observed distribution of tritium was compared with that calculated by a mathematical model based on diffusivity. This study suggests that the tritiated water can be used to trace the movement of ground water.

In this study, the analysis of concrete cracks was conducted with a total of three variables: coating thickness, oxygen diffusion rate, and reinforced diameter of reinforced concrete structures. Cracks occurred after about 3, 4, and 6 years at the coating thickness of 30, 40, and 50mm when the coating thickness was used as a variable, and cracks occurred after about 4, 5, and 10 years at oxygen diffusivity of 2e-9, 2e-11, and 2e-12(m2/s) when the oxygen diffusion rate was used as a variable. In the case of reinforcing bar diameters, cracks occurred after about 4, 3, and 2 years on the reinforcing bar diameters of D10, D19, and D25.
We studied the large scale dynamo process in a system forced by helical magnetic field. The dynamo process is basically nonlinear, but can be linearized with 𝛼&𝛽 coefficients and large scale magnetic field $\bar{B}$. This is very useful to the investigation of solar (stellar) dynamo. A coupled semi-analytic equations based on statistical mechanics are used to investigate the exact evolution of 𝛼&𝛽. This equation set needs only magnetic helicity ${\bar{H}}_M({\equiv}{\langle}{\bar{A}}{\cdot}{\bar{B}}{\rangle},\;{\bar{B}}={\nabla}{\times}{\bar{A}})$ and magnetic energy ${\bar{E}}_M({\equiv}{\langle}{\bar{B}}^2{\rangle}/2)$. They are fundamental physics quantities that can be obtained from the dynamo simulation or observation without any artificial modification or assumption. 𝛼 effect is thought to be related to magnetic field amplification. However, in reality the averaged 𝛼 effect decreases very quickly without a significant contribution to ${\bar{B}}$ field amplification. Conversely, 𝛽 effect contributing to the magnetic diffusion maintains a negative value, which plays a key role in the amplification with Laplacian ∇2(= - k2) for the large scale regime. In addition, negative magnetic diffusion accounts for the attenuation of plasma kinetic energy EV(= 〈 U2 〉/2) (U: plasma velocity) when the system is saturated. The negative magnetic diffusion is from the interaction of advective term - U • ∇ B from magnetic induction equation and the helical velocity field. In more detail, when 'U' is divided into the poloidal component Upol and toroidal one Utor in the absence of reflection symmetry, they interact with - B • ∇ U and - U • ∇ B from ∇ × 〈 U × B 〉 leading to 𝛼 effect and (negative) 𝛽 effect, respectively. We discussed this process using the theoretical method and intuitive field structure model supported by the simulation result.
Thermoacoustic power generation by a spiral heater in the Rijke tube was analyzed numerically. In the analysis, variables were normalized by the angular frequency of the sound and the thermal diffusivity of the air. The effect of the heater wire diameter d, the spacing between wires P-d, and the air-current velocity $U_0$, upon the power generation was obtained and discussed. When the spacing is broad enough, the normalized velocity is $U_0{\approx}0.8$ and the diameter is $d{\approx}4$ for the maximum power generation. With decrease of the spacing, however, the power generation increases more than 5 times and becomes maximum around $d{\approx}2$, $P-d{\approx}3$. And the velocity $U_0{\approx}0.8$ for the maximum power generation is almost independent of the wire spacing.

In order to investigate the mixing of sea waters on the continental shelf in the northern East China Sea, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute conducted hydrographic surveys including turbulence measurements using the R/V Eardo in August 2005 and August 2006. The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates based on velocity shear measurements are estimated to be $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{4}$, $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-6}$, and $10^{-7}$ W/kg in the surface layer, bottom layer, and lower thermocline, respectively. The data sets suggest that surface layer water is being constantly mixed by winds. High dissipation rate in the lower thermocline seems to be caused by internal waves. The bottom layer with high dissipation rate also shows high turbidity, indicating the effect of tidal stirring turbulence. The vertical eddy diffusivities are $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-2}m^2/s$ near the bottom, and these high values appear to arise from both the low stability and high turbulent mixing.
Retardation and hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient necessary for model of water and solute movement in a soil were determined for horizontal soil column with different initial soil water conditions. The soil columns were compacted with sandy loam soil. The bulk density was $1,350+50kg/m^3$, and initial water contents were 0.05, 0.08 and 0.14. Advancement of 0.05% $CaSO_4$ solution was used as the standard and advancements of 0.5% KCl, $CaCl_2$ and $KH_2PO_4$ were compared. Retardation of non-reactive $Cl^-$ was related with the initial soil water content, ${\theta}n$, as ${\theta}/({\theta}-{\theta}n)$, and anion exclusion was ignored. Retardations of active $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ were related as 1/(R+1) $^*{\theta}/({\theta}-{\theta}n)$, in which R was retardation coefficient. Measured R was 0.64 for $K^+$, 0.80 for $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and 2.6 for $H_2PO_4{^-}$, respectively. Calculated R using Langmuir adsorption isotherm showed fair degree of applicability. Soil water diffusivity, $D({\theta}),m^2/sec$, calculated for different initial water content showed unique function as $$log(D({\theta}))=13.448{\theta}-9.288$$ Hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of $Cl^-$ above soil water content 0.36 was similar to soil water diffusivity and decreased to near self diffusion coefficient at soil water content near 0.2. Those of $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$$H_2PO_4{^-}$ at soil water content of 0.38 were $5.5{\times}10^{-6}$, $2.4{\times}10^{-6}$ and $7.1{\times}10^{-7}m^2/sec$ and decreased rapidly with decreasing soil water content lower than 0.36.

Electromigration behavior in the Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5 solder lines was investigated and compared Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5 with eutectic SnPb. Measurements were made for relevant parameters for electromigration of the solder, such as drift velocity, threshold current density, activation energy, as well as the product of diffusivity and effective charge number (DZ$\ast$). The threshold current density were measured to be $2.38{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ at $140^{\circ}C$ and the value represented the maximum current density which the SnAgCu solder can carry without electromigration damage at the stressing temperatures. The electromigration energy was measured to 0.56 eV in the temperature range of $110-160^{\circ}C$. The measured products of diffusivity and the effective charge number, DZ$\ast$ were $3.12{\times}10^{-10} cm^2/s$ at $110^{\circ}C$, $4.66{\times}10^{-10} cm^2/s$ at $125^{\circ}C$, $8.76{\times}10^{-10} cm^2/s$ at $140^{\circ}C$, $2.14{\times}10^{-9}cm^2/s$ at $160^{\circ}C$ SnPb solder existed incubation stage, while SnAgCu did not have incubation stage. It was thought that the diffusion mechanism of SnAgCu was different from that of SnPb.
An engineering design of the machines and equipment for processing grain as well as an understanding of processing itself need the knowledge of thermal properties of grain. Thermal properties of grain are thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat. Knowledge of any two and the bulk density of grain enables the third to be calculated. Several workers have investigated these properties, with special emphasis on thermal conductivity and diffusivity. However, some information is available on the specific heat of rough rice and barley but it is available only for a foreign variety of grain and for as a function of moisture content only. The objectives of this study were to develop a model for the specific heat of rough rice and barley which were a staple products in Korea as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity of grain with cooling curve method, and to analyze the effect of these factors on the specific heat of rough rice and barley. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The specific heat was $1.8209-2.7041kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Naked barley, 1.8862-2.5625 k.l/kg K for Covered barley, $1.5167-2.3779kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Japonica rice and $1.5260-2.3981kJ/kg\;^{\circ}K$ for Indica rice. 2. The model for the specific heat of rough rice and barley as a function of initial temperature, moisture content and porosity of grain was developed. 3. Specific heat of rough rice was decreased with initial temperature, but specific heat of barley was increased with initial temperature. 4. On the whole specific heat of sample grain was increased with moisture content of grain. 5. Specific heat of the grain was found to decrease with porosity except Indica rice.
The high temperature and water content in soil profile probably affect the physiological disorder especially on cool-season turfgrasses in warm and humid weather of Korean summer. The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of soil temperature and water content on the growth and stress response of creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustris Huds.) under a humid and warm temperature. USGA(United State of Golf Association) green profile in laboratory test, Daily temperature changes were tested under a dried sand, 70% water content of field capacity, and saturated condition at $34^{\circ}C$ of the USGA green in lab. In this test, the dried sand reached to $80^{\circ}C$, however, the surface temperature decrease of $10^{\circ}C$ on the saturated condition. In the thermal properties test in field, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and soil temperature were increased followed by irrigation practise. In the water-deficient condition, the highest soil temperature was reached temporally right after irrigation, however, the excessive soil water content higher than field water holding capacity showed the highest soil temperature after a while. This result indicated that a heat damage to root system was caused from the thermal conductivity of a high surface soil temperature. The excessive irrigation when a high turf surface temperature should occur a negative result on tufgrass growth, moreover, it would be fatal to root growth of creeping bentgrass, especially when associated with a poor draining system on USGA sand green. Overall, this study shows that high soil temperature with water-excessive condition negatively affects on cool-season grass during the summer season, suggesting that excessive irrigation, over 70% field capacity of soil condition, does not help to reduce soil temperature for summer season in Korea. In the study that cool-season grass were treated with different water content of soil, The soil had higher temperature and more water holding capacity when treatment rate of soil conditioner was increased. The best growth at the normal water condition and the worst state of growth at thee water-excessive condition were observed.
