  • The diffusion model, which considers diffusion and sorption, is proposed. The FEM program developed on the basis of the diffusion model provides the estimation of chloride concentration according to cyclic humidity and sorption. After the humidity diffusion analysis is carried out, the chloride ion diffusion and sorption analysis are conducted on the basis of the preestimated humidity data in each element. Each element has different analysis variables at different ages and locations. At early ages, the difference between inner and outer relative humidity causes the chloride ion penetration by sorption. As the humidity diffusion reduces the difference with age, the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration decreases. By the way, the cyclic humidity increases the effect of sorption on the chloride ion penetration at early ages, and the quantity of chloride ion around steel at later ages. Therefore, the in situ analysis of chloride ion penetration for marine concrete structures must be performed considering the cyclic humidity condition and the long term sorption.

  • To predict service life of concrete structures exposed to chloride attack, surface chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and chloride corrosion threshold value in concrete, are used as important factors. of these, as the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete is strongly influenced by concrete quality and environmental conditions of structures and may significantly change the service life of structures, it is considered as the most important factor for service life prediction. The qualitative factors affecting the penetration and diffusion of chloride ion into concrete are water-binder(W/B) ratio, age, cement type and constituents, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. In this paper the influence of cement type on the diffusion characteristics of chloride ion in concrete was investigated through the chloride ion diffusion test. For this purpose, the diffusion characteristics in concrete with cement type such as ordinary portland cement(OPC), binary blended cement(BBC), and ternary blended cement(TBC) were estimated for the concrete with W/B ratios of 32% and 38%, respectively. It was observed from the test that the difussion characteristics of BBC containing OPC and ground granulated blast-furnace slag was found to be most excellent of the cement type used in this study.

  • Chloride ion diffusion at the corner of rectangular-shaped concrete structures is presented. At the corner of rectangular-shaped concrete, chloride ion diffusion is in two-dimensional process. Chloride ions accumulate from two orthogonal directions, so that corrosion-free life of concrete structures is significantly reduced. A numerical procedure based on finite element method is used to solve the two-dimensional diffusion process. Orthotropic property of diffusion coefficient of concrete is considered and chloride ion profile obtained from numerical analysis is used to produce transformed diffusion coefficient. Comparisons of experimental data are also carried out to show the reliability of proposed numerical analysis. As a result of two-dimensional chloride diffusion, corrosion-free life of concrete structure for railway is estimated using probability of corrosion initiation. In addition, monographs that produces transformed diffusion coefficient and corrosion-free life of concrete structure are made for maintenance purpose.

After the humidity diffusion analysis is carried out, the chloride ion diffusion and sorption analysis are conducted on the basis of the preestimated humidity data in each element. • A chloride is an important deteriorating factor which governs the durability of the reinforced-concrete structures under marine environments. Also, the main penetration mechanism of chloride ion into concrete is a diffusion phenomenon and numerous methods have been proposed to determine the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion quickly. In this study, electrically accelerated experiments were carried out in order to evaluate diffusion coefficient of the chloride ion into concrete. The methods were diffusion cell test method in which the voltage of 15V(DC) was applied. The type of cement is blended cement in which the admixtures of blast-furnace slag and fly ash were used. In conclusion, the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion is much affected according to mineral admixtures and the diffusion coefficient of ternary blended cement showed very low values. it is presumably said that this result is due to highly densified pore structures by the aid of slag substitution and pozzolanic activity of fly ash.

  • Carbonation is a widespread degradation of concrete and may be coupled with more severe degradations. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the effect of carbonation on chloride ion diffusion of concrete. The characteristic of concrete after carbonation was measured, such as carbonation depth, strength and pore structure. Results indicated that carbonation depth has a good linear relation with square root of carbonate time, and carbonation can improve compressive strength, but lower flexural strength. Results about pore structure of concrete before and after carbonation have shown that carbonation could cause a redistribution of the pore sizes and increase the proportion of small pores. It also can decrease porosities, most probable pore size and average pore diameters. Chloride ion diffusion of concrete after carbonation was studied through natural diffusion method and steady state migration testing method respectively. It is supposed that the chloride ion concentration of carbonation region is higher than that of the sound region because of the separation of fixed salts, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient was increased due to carbonation action evidently.

  • Recently, as many big marine concrete structures increase, it is necessary that chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete shall be evaluated but it will take a long time to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient of concrete. Accordingly, many test methods are suggested to evaluate chloride ion diffusion coefficient in a short period time by the promotion in electro chemical ways but the systematic study for this is insufficient. Therefore, this study evaluates chloride ion penetration and diffusion features by three representative electric promotion tests targeting for three different cements whose ingredients are different and analyzes the correlationship between them. As a result, diffusion features of chloride ion varied according to the cement ingredients and three ingredients cement in which blast furnace slag powder and fly ash are mixed in constant ratio, which shows the most excellent cement diffusion properties. For diffusion properties of chloride ion, the correlationship between test methods are good.

The qualitative factors affecting the penetration and diffusion of chloride ion into concrete are water-cement (W/C) ratio, age, curing conditions, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. In this paper the influence of W/C ratio and curing conditions on the diffusion characteristics of chloride ion in concrete was investigated through the chloride ion diffusion test. In the test, the voltages passing through the diffusion cell were measured by accelerated test method using potential difference, and then with the consideration of IR drop ratio the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete with different W/C ratios were estimated by Andrade's model. Furthermore, under different curing conditions formulas for the estimation of the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion have been proposed by the regression analysis considering the effect of W/C ratio and age.

  • In this study, to confirm corrosion of reinforced concrete affected by carbonation, chloride ion diffusion, absorption ratio, air permeability, measured carbonation velocity coefficient, chloride ion diffusion coefficient, absorption coefficient, air permeability coefficient. Corrosion velocity under environment of complex deterioration. And than compared corrosion velocity with these coefficients. As the results of this study, the correlation coefficient between chloride ion diffusion coefficients and absorption coefficient was revealed that it is very high. As well, an increase in carbonation, chloride ion diffusion also increases corrosion velocity. It showed that corrosion velocity was affected by the carbonation, chloride ion diffusion, absorption ratio, air permeability. Generally, data on the development of these coefficient made with none, organic B, organic A, inorganic B, and inorganic A is shown. It showed that coating of surface prevent steel bar from deteriorating.
