Two-Microphone Binary Mask Speech Enhancement in Diffuse and Directional Noise Fields

  • Two-microphone binary mask speech enhancement (2mBMSE) has been of particular interest in recent literature and has shown promising results. Current 2mBMSE systems rely on spatial cues of speech and noise sources. Although these cues are helpful for directional noise sources, they lose their efficiency in diffuse noise fields. We propose a new system that is effective in both directional and diffuse noise conditions. The system exploits two features. The first determines whether a given time-frequency (T-F) unit of the input spectrum is dominated by a diffuse or directional source. A diffuse signal is certainly a noise signal, but a directional signal could correspond to a noise or speech source. The second feature discriminates between T-F units dominated by speech or directional noise signals. Speech enhancement is performed using a binary mask, calculated based on the proposed features. In both directional and diffuse noise fields, the proposed system segregates speech T-F units with hit rates above 85%. It outperforms previous solutions in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and perceptual evaluation of speech quality improvement, especially in diffuse noise conditions.

  • This paper is to compare the absorption coefficient with normal incidence waves and it with diffuse incidence waves of glass wool which the most used absorption material and multi layer fiber. The absorption coefficient with normal incidence waves is calculated by surface impedance that measured by using an acoustic tube. Based on this data, the absorption. coefficient with diffuse incidence waves is predicted and is compared with measured the absorption coefficient in reverberation room.

  • It is diffuse sound field that measuring condition of absorption ratio and sound transmission loss for material consist of building are measured in reverberartion room and on-site. In this study, for upkeeping diffuse sound field in reverberation room, it is measured and etimated that sound field is effected according to sound source lacation and characteristics of emission directivity for sound source.

  • In this study, several methods for measuring floor impact sound were introduced. Among them, the simple methods (impedance method and diffuse index method) which can be easily applied to site works were investigated. Moreover, the comparison between the calculation results using diffuse index method and the experimental results measured in real apartment structures was conducted. Consequently, the modified diffuse index method, which can be practically used for predicting the performance of to the floor impact sound of apartment structures and can meet the allowable tolerance of Grade I (${\pm}$5㏈), was proposed.

  • This study is dealt with a method to enhance low-frequency diffuse sound field in a scaled reverberation chamber. Because scaled reverberation chamber has not enough room volume, as a result, it shows a few room modes. So it is not build up low-frequency diffuse sound field. A Helmholtz resonator's arrangement is used to improve spatial uniformity of sound pressure at low frequency. The spatial distribution of sound field has been measured before and after control. The standard deviation of sound field has decreased at 315Hz 1/3 Octave band.

  • This paper shows the feasibility of the suggestion that the angle distribution of incident sound to panels might be gaussian, instead of the conventional uniform distribution in the analysis of transmission loss of panels. To prove the suggestion, the problems with the diffuse sound field in a reverberation room are examined by case studies and the comparision of the prediction with the measurement of sound transmission loss of walls are performed. The results of the comparision show good agreement between the two values.

  • In this paper, we introduce noise prediction program of HVAC system to assist low-noisy design of ship's cabin. The developed program calculates sound power levels at HVAC components considering primary and secondary noise generated by fan and duct element, duct element noise attenuation, and duct break-in noise based on the authentic empirical method suggested by NEBB and acoustic power balancing method. Sound pressure level at cabin with or without ceiling system is evaluated by the diffuse-field theory considering diffuser and duct break-out sound powers. Moreover, the program provides intuitive pre- and post-processors using modem GUI functions to help efficient modeling and evaluation of cabin and HVAC component noise. To validate the accuracy and convenience of the program, noise prediction for a HVAC system is demonstrated.

  • This study is to suggest the improved noise barrier which is harmonized with surrounding landscape and maintained the similar reduction of reflected sound and diffraction effects in comparison with the aluminum noise barrier of absorbing type which is formed a great majority in Korea. In this study the two improved models of noise barrier(Diffuse and Disperse type) were designed and compared with the noise barriers of absorbing type in the acoustics performance (the reduction of reflected sound and diffraction effects) through the field and full-scale experimental measurement. As these two models have the same acoustic performance as the noise barrier of aluminum absorbing type, it is suggested that these models can be applied to the improved noise barrier as an alteration of aluminum absorbing type barrier.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for generating a terrain using a noise function and a height map as one of the procedural terrain generation methods. The polygon mesh data structure to represent the generated terrain concisely and render it is also described. The Perlin noise function is used as the noise technique for terrain mesh, and the height data of the terrain is generated by combining the four noise waves. In addition, the terrain height information can be also obtained from actual image data taken from the satellite. The algorithm presented in this paper generates the geometry part of the polygon topography from the height data obtained, and generated a material for texture mapping with two textures, that is, a diffuse texture and a normal texture. The validity of the terrain method proposed in this paper is verified through application examples, and its possibility can be confirmed through performance verification.
