  • Light intensities under and above shading material were measured at different layers (upper, middle and lower layers) and lines (lst, 3rd and 5th lines) on clear and cloudy days in S-year-old ginseng plant populations. Rates of photosynthesis and respiration were also measured in field. Light intensities of the 1st lines at upper and lower layers were relatively high as compared with the 3rd and the 5th lines, and there were no remarkable difference between the 3rd and the 5th line. But in middle layer, the light intensity of each line differed considerably. As compared with fair and clear day, the day of clear but much diffuse light showed high light intensity under shading. Relative light intensity was higher on cloudy day than on clear day. There were notable differences of photosynthetic rates among the lines and the rearest lines exhibited the lowest rates. But it was not considered that even the front plants demonstrated the maximum photosynthetic capacity.

  • In this study, ZnSe-$TiO_2$ composites were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel process and characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms (77 K), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by decoloration methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (Rh.B) in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The results revealed that the photocatalytic activity of the ZnSe-$TiO_2$ photocatalyst was much higher than that of pure$TiO_2$. The ZnSe nanoparticles, which act as a photosensitizer, not only extend the spectral response of $TiO_2$ to the visible region but also reduce charge recombinations.

  • This study investigates the effects of interior design elements on the satisfaction and preference for space. Field measurements and surveys were conducted in three coffeeshops where various interior design elements were applied. Results indicate that movable tables and chairs for two people were preferred in the space. They need to be placed flexibly according to the visitors' needs to improve satisfaction for convenience. To improve spatial satisfaction, the brightness of color applied to wall surfaces was recommended to be lower than that of color used for floor surfaces. The surfaces of space and interior design elements such as furniture also need to be kept clean. Lamps with lower color temperature were effective to enhance spatial satisfaction. Light sources should be shielded when a pendant lighting system with general diffuse type was used in space. Natural daylight through window was also required for better satisfaction level. Multiple linear regression implied that the cozy feeling by electric light, existence of daylight, flexible layouts for tables and chairs, color and quality of material for tables and floor were significant contributors to overall spatial satisfaction.

  • The co-evaporated cathodes composed of A1 and CsF is adopted to enhance the electrical and the optical properties of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The hole transport layer (HTL), made of 50nm thick N,N-dipheny1-N,N-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-bipheny14,4-diamine (TPD), and the electron transport layer (ETL), made of 50nm thick tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminum (A1q$_3$), were deposited under the base pressure of 1.6$\times$10$^{-6}$ Torr. In depositing A1-CsF, the mass ratio of CsF is varied between 1 and 10wt%. OLEDs with co-evaporated cathodes have luminance of about 35,000cd/$m^2$, and external quantum efficiency of about 1.38%. Cs tends to diffuse into the organic layer and then re-forms Cs$^{+}$cation and free electron with the Cs-doped surface region.n.

  • In studying the dynamical evolution of galaxy clusters, one intriguing approach is to compare the spatial distributions of various components, such as the dark matter, the member galaxies, the gas, and the intracluster light (ICL; the diffuse light from stars, which are not bound any individual cluster galaxy). If we find a visible component whose spatial distribution coincides with the dark matter distribution, then we could draw a dark matter map without requiring laborious weak lensing analysis. Furthermore, if the component traces the dark matter distribution better for more relaxed galaxy cluster, we could use the similarity as a dynamical stage estimator of the galaxy cluster. We present a novel new methodology to quantify the similarity of two or more 2-dimensional spatial distributions. We apply the method to a sample of galaxy clusters at different dynamical stages simulated within N-cluster Run, which is an N-body simulation using the galaxy replacement technique. Among the various components (stellar particles, galaxies, ICL), the velocity defined ICL+ brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) component traces the dark matter best. Between the sample galaxy clusters, the relaxed clusters show stronger similarity of the spatial distribution between the dark matter and ICL+BCG than the dynamically young clusters.

  • Debris disks are circumstellar dust disks around main-sequence stars. They are important observational clues to understanding the planetary system formation. The zodiacal light is the thermal emission from the dust disk in our Solar system. For a comprehensive understanding of the nature and the evolution of dust disks around main-sequence stars, we try a comparative study of debris disks and the zodiacal light. We search for debris disks using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky point source catalog. By applying accurate flux estimate of the photospheric emission based on the follow-up near-infrared observations with IRSF, we have improved the detection rate of debris disks. For a detailed study of the structure and grain properties in the zodiacal dust cloud, as an example of dust disks around main-sequence stars, we analyze the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky diffuse maps. As a result of the debris disks search, we found old (>1 Gyr) debris disks which have large excess emission compared to their age, which cannot be explained simply by the conventional steady-state evolution model. From the zodiacal light analysis, we find the possibility that the dust grains trapped in the Earth's resonance orbits have increased by a factor of ~3 in the past ~20 years. Combining these results, we discuss the non-steady processes in debris disks and the zodiacal light.

  • Disinfection of a waterborne pathogenic protozoa, Giardia lamblia, by the conventional chlorine method has been known to be difficult. An alternative disinfection has been carried out by using a UV -light illuminating opticalfiber photoreactor. Light intensity diffused from one piece of a clad-removed optical-fiber was $1- 1.5{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$. Disinfection capability in a UV -light irradiated optical-fiber reactor suspended with 0.01 g $TiO_{2}\;dm^{-3}$ was 1.4 times that in the same reactor without $TiO_{2}$ photocatalysts. To resolve the absorption and scattering of UV light by the particles themselves as well as the difficulty of recycling particles in the slurrytype reactor, $TiO_{2}$ which was obtained by a hydrothermal method, was immobilized on clad-removed optical fibers. Such pretreatment of fiber surface resulted in an excellent transparency, which enhanced the UV light to diffuse laterally from a fiber surface. Coating time of the prepared solution by the hydrothermal method was not effective after more than two times. Disinfection capability in the $TiO_{2}$-immobilized optical-fiber reactor was $83\%$ in 1 h at $40^{\circ}C$, which was slightly higher than $76\%$ at $22^{\circ}C$ and $68\%$ at $10^{\circ}C$. Disinfection capability at $22^{\circ}C$ increased from $74\%$ at an initial pH of 3.4, through $76\%$ at pH 6.5, to $87\%$ at an initial pH of 10. Oxygen supply with air-flow rate of 5 $cm^3\;min^{-1}$ did not seem to increase the disinfection capability with UV /immobilized $TiO_2$.

  • Visible-light-active $TiO_2-_xN_x$ nanoparticles with a homogeneous anatase crystalline structure were successfully prepared through a hydrolysis of $TiCl_4$ with ammonia solution. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), $N_2$-sorption, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) techniques. The light absorption onset shifted from 390 nm on pure $TiO_2$ to the visible region at 530 nm on nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$. A clear decrease in the band gap was deduced from the DRS results. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated from the photodegradation of congo red solution under visible light irradiation. The photocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity at an optimal value of nitrogen doping concentration. This was suggested that the nitrogen doping should have an important effects on the improvement of photocatalytic activity.

  • In this study, the influence of surface roughness on light scattering from Au pads on a PCB surface was investigated. Angular distributions of light scattered from Au pads with different surface roughness were measured for several incident angles. Diffusely-scattered light could be separated by using the fact that the amount of specularly-scattered light was directly related to surface roughness. The separated diffuse term was curve-fitted with a physics-based model, and then the related scattering parameters were extracted and compared with measured parameters.

  • Spectral solar irradiances were observed using a visible and UV Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer on the rooftop of the Science Building at Yonsei University, Seoul ($37.57^{\circ}N$, $126.98^{\circ}E$, 86 m) during one year period in 2006. 1-min measurements of global(total) and diffuse solar irradiances over the solar zenith angle (SZA) ranges from $20^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ were used to examine the effects of clouds and total optical depth (TOD) on enhancing four solar irradiance components (broadband 395-955 nm, UV channel 304.5 nm, visible channel 495.2 nm, and infrared channel 869.2 nm) together with the sky camera images for the assessment of cloud conditions at the time of each measurement. The obtained clear-sky irradiance measurements were used for empirical model of clear-sky irradiance with the cosine of the solar zenith angle (SZA) as an independent variable. These developed models produce continuous estimates of global and diffuse solar irradiances for clear sky. Then, the clear-sky irradiances are used to estimate the effects of clouds and TOD on the enhancement of surface solar irradiance as a difference between the measured and the estimated clear-sky values. It was found that the enhancements occur at TODs less than 1.0 (i.e. transmissivity greater than 37%) when solar disk was not obscured or obscured by optically thin clouds. Although the TOD is less than 1.0, the probability of the occurrence for the enhancements shows 50~65% depending on four different solar radiation components with the low UV irradiance. The cumulus types such as stratoculmus and altoculumus were found to produce localized enhancement of broadband global solar irradiance of up to 36.0% at TOD of 0.43 under overcast skies (cloud cover 90%) when direct solar beam was unobstructed through the broken clouds. However, those same type clouds were found to attenuate up to 80% of the incoming global solar irradiance at TOD of about 7.0. The maximum global UV enhancement was only 3.8% which is much lower than those of other three solar components because of the light scattering efficiency of cloud drops. It was shown that the most of the enhancements occurred under cloud cover from 40 to 90%. The broadband global enhancement greater than 20% occurred for SZAs ranging from 28 to $62^{\circ}$. The broadband diffuse irradiance has been increased up to 467.8% (TOD 0.34) by clouds. In the case of channel 869.0 nm, the maximum diffuse enhancement was 609.5%. Thus, it is required to measure irradiance for various cloud conditions in order to obtain climatological values, to trace the differences among cloud types, and to eventually estimate the influence on solar irradiance by cloud characteristics.
