  • A two-beam polarization (TBP) interfermeter with a reflection configuration for measuring the linear electroptic coefficient is described and investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is shown that a TBP interferometer can be used for measuring the Pockels coefficient of thin film with a strong Fabry-Perot effect. The TBP interferometer technique is used to measure the effective differential linear electro-optic coefficient $re=r_{33}-(n_0/n_0)^3r_{13}$of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film. The results are in agreement with known data.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the efficient method and guideline of controlling the cracking in bridge deck concrete due to differential drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage cracking is mainly influenced by the moisture diffusion coefficient that determines moisture diffusion rate inside concrete structures. In addition to the diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient of concrete surface and relative humidity of ambient air simultaneously affect the moisture evaporation from concrete inside to external air outside. Within the framework of cracking shrinkage cracking mechanism, it is necessary to conceive the numerical analysis, which involves these three influencing factors to predict and control the shrinkage cracking of concrete. In this study, moisture diffusion and stress analysis corresponding to drying shrinkage on bridge deck are performed with consideration of diffusion coefficient, surface coefficient, and relative humidity of ambient air. From the numerical results, it is found that cracking behavior due to differential drying shrinkage of bridge deck concrete shows different feature according to three influencing factors and the methodology of controlling of drying shrinkage cracks can be suggested from this study.

  • We study a maximum principle for a uniformly elliptic second order differential operator in nondivergence form. We allow a bounded positive zeroth order coefficient in a certain type of unbounded domains. The results extend a result by J. Busca in a sense of domains, and we present a simple proof based on local maximum principle by Gilbarg and Trudinger with iterations.

  • In this paper, the Fourier Transform is employed to solve the coupled differential equations of modal power and three equations of the mode coupling coeficient are dierived using the phasor form trial soluation. The theory of the mode coupling coefficient contains a few theories proposed by earlier authers. Also it is seen that in case the optical source is modulated by a sinusoidal function, this theory is applied as well. In experiment, the mode coupling coefficient is determinded for a multimode graded-index fiber by using the optical source, which modulated by a sinusoidal function.

  • To effectively remove chaff echoes, which are often misidentified as precipitation echoes on weather radars, this study examines the relationship between the radar reflectivity and each of dual polarimetric parameters. The dual polarimetric parameters are collected only for the echo areas identified as chaff echoes on the NIMR X-band dual polarization radar. Overall, the polarimetric parameters (i.e., reflectivity, differential reflectivity, cross correlation coefficient, standard deviation of differential reflectivity and specific differential phase) for chaff echoes have a wider range of values than those for precipitation echoes and the chaff filaments tend to be horizontally oriented to radar beams. There appears to be a considerable overlap in the cross correlation coefficient range of chaff and precipitation echoes since some precipitation echoes have cross correlation coefficient lower than 0.8. Therefore, although the cross correlation coefficient is known to be a good variable in identifying and separating chaff echoes from precipitation echoes, it is suggested that additional care should be taken when using the cross correlation coefficient solely in removing chaff echoes.

  • Wind-induced fluctuating internal pressures in a building with a dominant opening can be described by a second-order non-linear differential equation. However, the accuracy and efficiency of the governing equation in predicting internal pressure fluctuations depend upon two ill-defined parameters: inertial coefficient $C_I$ and loss coefficient $C_L$, since $C_I$ determines the un-damped oscillation frequency of an air slug at the opening, while $C_L$ controls the decay ratio of the fluctuating internal pressure. This study particularly focused on the value of loss coefficient and its influence factors including: opening configuration and location, internal volumes, as well as wind speed and approaching flow turbulence. A simplified formula was presented to predict loss coefficient, therefore an approximate relationship between the standard deviation of internal and external pressures can be estimated using Vickery's approach. The study shows that the loss coefficient governs the peak response of the internal pressure spectrum which, in turn, will directly influence the standard deviation of the fluctuating internal pressure. The approaching flow characteristic and opening location have a remarkable effect on the parameter $C_L$.

  • Let $f=h+{\bar{g}}$ be a normalized harmonic mapping in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$. In this paper, we obtain the sharp radius of univalence, fully starlikeness and fully convexity of the harmonic linear differential operators $D^{\epsilon}{_f}=zf_z-{\epsilon}{\bar{z}}f_{\bar{z}}({\mid}{\epsilon}{\mid}=1)$ and $F_{\lambda}(z)=(1-{\lambda)f+{\lambda}D^{\epsilon}{_f}(0{\leq}{\lambda}{\leq}1)$ when the coefficients of h and g satisfy harmonic Bieberbach coefficients conjecture conditions. Similar problems are also solved when the coefficients of h and g satisfy the corresponding necessary conditions of the harmonic convex function $f=h+{\bar{g}}$. All results are sharp. Some of the results are motivated by the work of Kalaj et al. [8].

  • The present paper analyses the radiation effects of mass transfer on steady nonlinear MHD boundary layer flow of a viscous incompressible fluid over a nonlinear porous stretching surface in a porous medium in presence of heat generation. The liquid metal is assumed to be gray, emitting, and absorbing but non-scattering medium. Governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by utilizing suitable similarity transformation. The resulting nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using Runge-Kutta fourth order method along with shooting technique. Comparison with previously published work is obtained and good agreement is found. The effects of various governing parameters on the liquid metal fluid dimensionless velocity, dimensionless temperature, dimensionless concentration, skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are discussed with the aid of graphs.

  • In this paper we investigate the growth of finite order solutions of the differential equation $f^{(k)}\;+\;A_{k-1}(Z)f^{(k-l)}\;+\;{\cdots}\;+\;A_1(z)f^{\prime}\;+\;A_0(z)f\;=\;F(z)$, where $A_0(z),\;{\cdots}\;,\;A_{k-1}(Z)\;and\;F(z)\;{\neq}\;0$ are entire functions. We find conditions on the coefficients which will guarantees the existence of an asymptotic value for a transcendental entire solution of finite order and its derivatives. We also estimate the lower bounds of order of solutions if one of the coefficient is dominant in the sense that has larger order than any other coefficients.

  • The uniform metal droplet generation using Nd-YAG laser was studied and experiment was carried out. The shape and volume of developed droplet was measured and the Young-Laplace equation and equilibrium condition of force were applied this model. The differential equation predicting shape of droplet using equilibrium condition of force instead of Navier-stokes equation was induced and numerical solution of differential equation compared with experimentation data. The differential equation was solved by Runge-Kutta method. Surface tension coefficient of droplet was determined with numerical solution relate to experimental result under the statical condition. In case of dynamic vibration, metal droplet shape and detaching critical volume are predicted by recalculating proposed model. The result revealed that this model could reasonably describe the behavior of molten metal droplet on vibration.
