  • Attempts to dope carbon nanotube (CNT) with impurities in order to control the electronic properties of the CNT is a natural course of action. Boron is known to improve both the structural and electronic properties. In this report, we study the field emission properties of Boron-doped double-walled CNT (DWCNT). Boron-doped DWCNT films were fabricated by catalytic decomposition of tetrahydrofuran and triisopropyl borate over a Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $900^{\circ}C$. We measured the field emission current by varying the doping amount of Boron from 0.8 to 1.8 wt%. As the amount of doped boron in the DWCNT increases, the turn-on-field of the DWCNT decreases drastically from 6 V/${\mu}m$ to 2 V/${\mu}m$. The current density of undoped CNT is 0.6 mA/$cm^2$ at 9 V, but a doped-DWCNT sample with 1.8 wt% achieved the same current density only at only 3.8 V. This shows that boron doped DWCNTs are potentially useful in low voltage operative field emitting device such as large area flat panel displays.

  • Pulse diagnosis that is one of important examination methods in traditional oriental medicine has been investigated for the standardization in many ways. Pulse analyzer device and clinical studies have been tried for this purpose. Additionally, literature study has significance for this standardization. In this study, we analyzed pulse types in literatures from the viewpoint of physics. We refered to Maijing, Maijue, siyanjuyao, Binhumaixue, Yixuerumen, zhenjiazhengyan. We established some physical factors for analysis. This factors that can be detected through pulse analyzer are depth, speed, power, width, and length. In this study, we defined 18 kinds of pulse types among 28 total types by physical factors. Furthermore, 6 kinds of pulse types were classified as basic pulse from these. The results of this study will improve the pulse analyzer to detect these pulse types.

  • PLS(Pohang Light Source) is 2.5 Gev synchrotron radiation source in Pohang, Korea, which is under operation since 1995. The hardware and software of the old BPM(Beam Position Monitor) data acquisition system for the PLS storage ring was completely upgraded to increase its performance and stability. The new BPM data acquisition system is based on VME-based EPICS (Experimental Physics and Instrument Control System) IOC system. We used 16-bit resolution analog-to-digital conversion board to digitize analog BPM signals. We developed a data average software to average raw BPM data using reflective memory board. We also developed device drivers for VME I/O boards used, IOC database for PV's(Process Variables). The new BPM data acquisition system is currently running for routine operation with good performance and stability. In this paper, we present the hardware and software of the new BPM data acquisition system DTL water skid cooling system and Resonant Control Cooling.

  • In order to develop nano-devices with much lower power consumption for beyond-CMOS applications, the fundamental understanding and precise control of the electronic properties of ultrathin transition metal oxide (TMO) films are strongly required. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is not only an important issue in solid state physics, but also a useful phenomenon for device applications like switching or memory devices. For potential use in such application, the electronic structures of MIT, observed for TMO nano-structures, have been investigated using a synchrotron radiation angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy system combined with a laser molecular beam epitaxy chamber and a scanning photoelectron microscopy system with 70 nm spatial resolution. In this review article, electronic structures revealed by soft X-ray nano-spectroscopy are presented for i) polarity-dependent MIT and thickness-dependent MIT of TMO ultrathin films of $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ and $SrVO_3/SrTiO_3$, respectively, and ii) electric field-induced MIT of TMO nano-structures showing resistance switching behaviors due to interfacial redox reactions and/or filamentary path formation. These electronic structures have been successfully correlated with the electrical properties of nano-structured films and nano-devices.

  • Photovoltaic devices are promising candidates as affordable and large-area renewable energy sources, which can replace the fossil-fuel-based resources. Especially, thin film solar cells have attracted increasing research attention, since they have a great advantage of low production cost. From the physical point of view, the photovoltaic devices can provide us interesting questions, how to enhance the light absorption and the carrier collection efficiency. A lot of approaches would be possible to address these issues. We have focused on two major topics relevant to photovoltaic device physics; (1) light management using surface plasmons and (2) junction characterizations aiming at proper interface engineering. Regarding the first topic, we have investigated the influences of Ag under-layer morphology on optical properties of ZnO thin films. The experimental results suggested that coupling between the surface plasmon polaritons at the ZnO/Ag interface and excitons in ZnO should play important roles in reflectivity of the ZnO/Ag thin films, which are widely used back reflector structures in thin film solar cells. For the second topic, we have carried out scanning probe microscopy studies of Schottky junctions consisting of photovoltaic materials. Such a research is very helpful to understand the correlation between the defects (e.g., grain boundaries) and local electrical properties. We will introduce some of the recent experimental results and discuss the physical significance.

  • The 2011 Tohoku earthquake triggered extremely destructive tsunami waves which propagated over the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean through Drake Passage and Indian Ocean respectively. A total of 10 tide-gauge records collected from the UNESCO/IOC site were analyzed through a band-pass digital filtering device to examine the observed tsunami characteristics. The ray tracing method and finite-difference model with GEBCO 30 arc second bathymetry were also applied to compare the travel times of the Tohoku-originated tsunami, particularly at Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean and King Edward Point in the Atlantic Ocean with observation-based estimates. At both locations the finite-difference model produced the shortest arrival times, while the ray method produced the longest arrival times. Values of the travel time difference however appear to be within tolerable ranges, considering the propagation distance of the tsunami waves. The observed tsunami at Rodrigues, Mauritius in the west of the Madagascar was found to take a clockwise travel path around Australia and New Zealand, while the observed tsunami at King Edward Point in the southern Atlantic Ocean was found to traverse the Pacific Ocean and then passed into the Atlantic Ocean through the Drake Strait. The formation of icebergs captured by satellite images in Sulzberger in the Antarctica also supports the long-range propagation of the Tohoku-originated tsunami.

  • We report a useful method to estimate the electron dose rate which may be a decisive factor to characterize sample properties. Even though most mircoscopes have their own exposure meters, there are several practical concerns when such exposure meters are used to measure the electron dose rate: 1) Specimen should be avoided within the entire area of exposure meter; 2) beam current has to be always recorded whenever the operation mode is changed; 3) the electron dose rate can not be calculated for the beam current beyond the detectable range. To overcome these limitations, we suggest a useful method which utilize a CCD (charge coupled device) camera which is now a popular detector to obtain the final electron micrographs. We have evaluated the CCD sensitivity using the linear relationship between electron current on the exposure meter and counter ratio on the CCD camera which are built in KBSI-HVEM (high voltage electron microscope). Applying the new method, we obtained the CCD sensitivity which are approximately 0.039 counts/$e^-$ and 1.37 counts/$e^-$ for the Top-TV and the HV-GIF CCD cameras, respectively.

  • We have studied the effect of host materials on the electrophosphorescence properties by comparing three different host materials such as tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)-aluminum (III) $(Alq_3)$, bis(8-hydroxyquinoline)-zinc (II) $(Znq_2)$, and 4,4'-N,N' dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP) doped with a red-emissive phosphorescent dye, 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-21H,23H-porphyrin platinum (II) (PtOEP). The EL spectra show a strong red emission (peak at 650 nm) from the triplet excited state of PtOEP and a very weak emission from an electron transport layer of $Alq_3$ and a hole transport layer of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD). We find that the triplet exciton lifetime and the quantum efficiency decrease in the order of CBP, $Alq_3$, and $Znq_2$ host materials. The results are interpreted as a poor exciton confinement in $Alq_3$, and $Znq_2$ host compared with in CBP. Therefore, it is very important for the triplet-exciton confinement in the emissive layer for obtaining a high efficiency.

  • It has been a long time since organic solar cells were expected as a low-cost energy-conversion device. Although practical use of them has not been achieved, technological progress continues. Morphology of the materials, organic/inorganic interface, metal cathodes, molecular packing and structural properties of the donor and acceptor layers are essential for photovoltaic response. We have fabricated solar cell devices based on zinc-phthalocyanine(ZnPc) as donor(D) and fullerene$(C_60)$ as electron acceptor(A) with doped charge transport layers, and BCP and $Alq_3$ as an exciton blocking layer(EBL). We have measured the photovoltaic characteristics of the solar cell devices using the Xe lamp as a light source. We were use of $Alq_3$ layer leads to external power conversion efficiency was $2.65\%$ at illumination intensity $100\;mW/cm^2$. Also we confirmed the optimum thickness ratio of the DA hetero-junction is about 1:2.

  • A wrist wearable cuffless pulsimeter with a portable and small size apparatus using Hall effect is fabricated. The analysis of the pulse wave measured by the testing product of pulsimeter is done to measure the pulse rate and blood pressure. The blood pressure obtained by the puslimeter is compared with the practical values measured by electronic or mercury liquid blood pressure meters. The detail analysis of a pulse wave measured by a wrist wearable cuffless pulsimeter detecting the changes of the magnetic field can be used to develop a new diagnostic algorithm of blood pressure applying for oriental medical apparatus.
